12:17 AM
After beating Undo, I now have the highest Imaginary Internet ELO Score™ out of all of us! :P

@Doorknob \o

@Doorknob :D

chess.com is weird

@Doorknob I like giving people tacos.

12:34 AM
I like cricket. To an extent.

never played.

me either, but I've watched.

2 hours later…
3:03 AM
It's a pity chess.com doesn't support Shogi and Xiangqi.

Am I supposed to know what in the world that's supposed to mean?

Yes.
:p
Shogi (将棋, shōgi) (/ˈʃoʊɡiː/, Japanese: [ɕo̞ːɡi] or [ɕo̞ːŋi]), also known as Japanese chess or the Generals' Game, is a two-player strategy board game in the same family as Western (international) chess, chaturanga, makruk, shatranj and xiangqi, and is the most popular of a family of chess variants native to Japan. Shōgi means general's (shō 将) board game (gi 棋). The earliest predecessor of the game, chaturanga, originated in India in the 6th century, and sometime in the 10th to 12th centuries xiangqi (Chinese chess) was brought to Japan where it spawned a number of variants. Shogi in its present...
Xiangqi (Chinese: 象棋, p Xiàngqí), also called Chinese chess, is a strategy board game for two players. It is one of the most popular board games in China, and is in the same family as Western (or international) chess, chaturanga, shogi, Indian chess and janggi. Besides China and areas with significant ethnic Chinese communities, xiangqi (cờ tướng) is also a popular pastime in Vietnam. The game represents a battle between two armies, with the object of capturing the enemy's general (king). Distinctive features of xiangqi include the cannon (pao), which must jump to capture; a rule prohibiting the...

o.o

I know Shogi.
and I kind of know Xiangqi.
They're both pretty fun.

Oh I've actually seen Xiangqi before, but just didn't know what it was called (or how to play). My grandfather in Korea has the board and pieces for that.

3:07 AM
Oh yeah? That's cool!
I never took to Xiangqi as much as Shogi because I could never remember the Chinese characters and the only Android app wasn't terribly good :/

Hmm. I've always wanted to try Android app development :P
Isn't there a webapp or something for that which would work via a mobile browser too?

lol
@Doorknob Oh and I don't know.. Webapps weren't so popular back then.
I don't believe so. I'm guessing they were all either flash or java based.
lol I just found a Windows Mobile app for Xiangqi.
Believe it or not I happen to have a Windows Mobile phone lying around.
oh new app @Doorknob: play.google.com/store/apps/… If you want to give it a try.
Doesn't look too bad.

3 hours later…
6:46 AM
@Seth The three-fold draw has always been a house rule.

7:15 AM
If you'd like to send me a correpondence game request, please send it on lichess instead of chess.com, because chess.com's user interface really sucks.

6 hours later…
1:18 PM
@Unihedro It's in the FIDE rules and I'm pretty sure I read it in the USCF rulebook too, although it's been a while since I've read that.
And I'd challenge you but I can't make an account on lichess on mobile because I can't move the pieces in their chess captcha xD
And I can't challenge through the lichess app.. sethj if you want to challenge me.

XD

1:34 PM
Aaand I didn't type my password properly so I cannot log in now, but I can't reset it because of the captcha. /fail

;-;
Let's use chess.com then. xD

OK! I'll fix it this evening when I have access to a computer.

What's your Chess.com username?

Sethdj

Oh, your avatar is actually a toy chameleon? SE scaled it so small, it looked like charcoal.

xD

Hmm, you have to have a premium account to host a team (on chess.com). I would buy premium just for a team, but it's a subscription based system, and I hate subscription based systems.

But it is your toy chameleon?

@Mooseman No, we stole it from you.

@Unihedro Spoken like a true netizen ;)

1:41 PM
xD
I only do subscription based purchases / donations for stuff I really like.
Like Wikipedia!
I give $5 / yr to wikipedia only, because I'm poor.

Wait. Are you in the US?

No, I'm not in the US. I live in HKSAR, which is somewhere in Asia.

ah...

Yes of course it's mine @Mooseman o_O

I'm hoping to finish JCE and an SE chat client built out of it, so I can post it on Stack Apps but use an adf.ly referral link. With the revenue that generates, I can donate to more organizations I like!
... as well as pay the server and electricity bills :D

1:45 PM
Wait, I thought HumanGuy was @Mooseman.. Who am I actually playing lol?

HumanGuy0 is mooseman I believe
y u no use consistent pseudonyms

/me? Because I can never think of any good ones :(
Wat
Why did I miss the word consistent there until right now o_O

@Unihedro yup
@GabrielTomitsuka howdy

I really didn't understand. What is this room about?

1:52 PM
@Unihedro to keep people on their toes

@GabrielTomitsuka Chess players from The Big Tavern and Teachers' Lounge.

@GabrielTomitsuka we're from the mse tavern and we play chess

Oh, okay. No Chess AI development, though?

@GabrielTomitsuka not yet

What do you guys use for playing?

1:53 PM
"Yet" is always the keyword.

chess.com

chess.com and lichess.org
Added "We're from the MSE Tavern and we play chess" to room topic; added tags

...and [waffles] is always the key tag ;)

:D

@Unihedro I spend $20 every month with orgs I like. This month I spent it with Sequelize.js, a Node.js Promise-based ORM.

1:55 PM
I want to build a bot that lists all our running games with a command so you could slip in and watch easily. xD
@GabrielTomitsuka That's great!

@Unihedro that'd be good
I've got to run now guys. I'll be away all day but I'll try to keep things more or less moving from my phone.

cya!

Seeya!

afk

kk

2 hours later…
3:43 PM
Hiya @Pro!

Hiya!
Yay, Mooseman made a move! :D
He took my bishop -_-
@Mooseman I suspect you'll win this game :P

3:59 PM
If you're a Stack Exchange user who plays chess as well, join us! http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/22119/tavern-tl-chess
:D

yay!

4 hours later…
7:51 PM
Hiya @magd!

8:02 PM
hi
how are ya?!

@magd Good here!
how are you?

not too bad

So just a little bad? :)

> 0
greater than 0, less than too

@magd haha, you made a quote
xD
Do you play chess, @magd?

8:05 PM
yes i do

Are you good?
I'm awful

I am 2000 FIDE, expert

I just play these guys for the fun
@magd so, you would cream me :P
That's an awesome rating.

chess takes time to learn I put the time in
that's all

@magd haha, I don't think I have the capacity.
How fast do you reckon you could beat me?

8:07 PM
depends how long you thought for, if you a complete beginner maybe 3 minutes

@magd Wanna try?
:P

I am kind of learning ruby right now

@magd Ah! ruby is cool

Hiya @magd, welcome!

hi @unihedro
@J.Musser if you want you can challenge me on chess.com my username is gthreegsix

8:10 PM
@magd oh, so you have an account there. I'll challenge you...

Are you a Bullet Chess player, Blitz Chess player, or do long games?
3

only playing online chess right now ie not live blitz

@Unihedro Blitz mostly

Heh, I do best under pressure.
So I guess I'm a bullet chess player.

@magd challenge issued :P

8:13 PM
I do best at blitz only because I don't use a mouse :p
@J.Musser Challenge accepted!

One time, to be dumb, I played bullet by moving one knight in and out. xD

My online rating is a bit low, should be 1800 at least

I went over 1200.
but that was a different account
@magd and mine should be about 800 or so.

but everyone says they should be higher rated
you're the first not to

Did you take lessons, or self-taught?
@magd Actually, I think I should be lower rated...

8:17 PM
I took about 8 lessons ever
from players > 2200

nice

Ha, the chess.com app is way better than the web version.
... And just as I said that, it crashed ;~;

Nice!

This is my other account. It went up to 1313 before it dropped. It was an experiment, where all I moved was the one knight.
in bullet chess

8:33 PM
I got about 3 accounts on chess.com :)

@magd all for serious play?
No forced mate in sight yet in our game @magd?

@J.Musser yeah I like switching between accounts

I have only one account on chess.com. Have three on lichess.

@J.Musser no forced mate yet I am playing positional

@magd I see.
@Unihedro I hate lichess...

8:38 PM
lichess is ok, quite strong players there I think

@magd I see strong players everywhere

@J.Musser I don't like chess.com. 1. It's closed source. /* roots of an OS dev */ 2. Its web UI sucks. 3. It charges you.

try chess24

@Unihedro no charge for the free version.

don't know what an OS dev is

8:39 PM
I'll play, if there is a free version.
And, if I don't have to create an account.

@Hosch250 Hey @Hosch250

Hi, @J.Musser

Hiya @Hosch250!

@Hosch250 idt you need an account for lichess, but you do for chess.com

4. (even) free version requires account.

8:40 PM
Hi, @Unihedro, I've seen you in the 2nd Monitor.
OK, I have enough accounts to keep track of and I'm not super in to Chess, although I find it interesting.

Hello :) I am a hobbyist and medalist programmer and I do many things for leisure, one being chatting and another being chess!

@Hosch250 ... well if you do make an account on chess.com, link to it, I'll challenge you :P

I chat for leisure, program for fun (I hope to get a job someday), and study "professionally" (although I don't care too much for it ;)).

I play the free version

Well, I'll look at it.

8:43 PM
Thinking of implementing a chess database in ruby

Oh yeah, and I have the adblock chrome extension, so no ads on any website :D

@magd Do it in C#, and I'll help.

C# maybe

@magd For learning?

I only know some C++ and noob
yeah for learning

8:44 PM
I know C# sort of, but I'm learning lots too.

I don't do any programming whatsoever

I'm in college now, so my help would be sporadic.

Our github repository (tobe add-on'd) is in the room description, currently we have a PGN scrapper script in ruby

OK I am going to start pawn grabbing

<-- is a plant health care professional.

8:45 PM
@Unihedro great!

And as said by Undo we might implement a tournament system ourselves later, and might even host a chess platform if this room gets popular.

@Unihedro what's the github address?

@Hosch250 I took it :)

I see, you've about whupped me already.

8:47 PM
It's in the room description, I'm on mobile so can't see it

@Hosch250 heh, not quite

Also, OS was for Open Source, btw

@Unihedro got it thanks

Nice job, @J.Musser.

@Hosch250 Good game

8:50 PM
If it was Checkers, I'd be harder to beat.
Or maybe not ;)
Want to play again?

@Hosch250 sure!

Sent rematch.

@Hosch250 accepted

Sneaky Bd6!

@magd haha Im dead already...

8:58 PM
that was a cheeky one
not sure actually
yeah you're dead

been:20676543 Haha, my predictions are being fulfilled, creamed I have n

same trick twice hehehe

@magd yeah I never see that xD

I have a conundrum.
Which Rook to take?
(Don't tell me, please.)

@magd good game!

9:05 PM
good game, thanks!

@Hosch250 I think you're winning this one

I'm better at white.
But, it has been tricky.

@Hosch250 me too

I wonder how we would do if we were white/white or black/black?
Impossible to know, though.

very impossible
XD

9:10 PM
any good way to learn ruby apart from the koans?

Is there any documentation?

sure but I'm not that experience with scripting languages
experienced

@Hosch250 /me isn't gonna break the wall of pawns; you do it

Shouldn't matter, really.

lol

9:13 PM
@J.Musser Going to in a sec.

@J.Musser @Hosch250 lol this is what chess is all about
Shogi might be more fun

@magd link to our game en.lichess.org/0suV8PpUqVjA

oh wow interesting

wat
weird
Didn't expect a stack there

will see if white manages to win

9:16 PM
@magd white is in way better shape piece-wise

I'll have to hurry if I don't want a draw.

yes indeed
b4! good move
I like this nil idea in ruby

Whoops, I stalemated you.

stalemate ftw!

Nice playing.

9:22 PM
seen that coming :D

That was an idiot move.

@Hosch250 yeah! gg

ouch

I could have prevented it if I had noticed.
Learn from the mistake.

@Hosch250 I saw it coming and hoped you wouldn't notice...

9:23 PM
:)

that's gotta suck

@magd link to new game: en.lichess.org/q14WiAG2mQWs

thanks but working on ruby now

Whoa.
Got me there.

@Hosch250 Good game
see, I play better as white also

9:26 PM
Thanks, but I played awful.
That was nearly a fool's mate!

@Hosch250 ha

You should have put your queen up instead of your rook over.
It would have been checkmate.

@Hosch250 ik that was clumsy

Good job.

good game
whoa did not mean to drop my queen there

9:41 PM
Want to take it back?

you could've taken w/ knight btw

Whoa, OK.

@Hosch250 but thanks for not seeing that xD
Good game :)

Nice game.

I have to quit for now
\o

9:52 PM
OK, me too.

good playin

Nice playing you, come back again sometime.
Funny, I talked with Undo, Doorknob, and Unihedro in other rooms, and I've seen J. Musser around, probably because he/she/it (in the event it is a bot) is a moderator.
Seems like I know a lot of these people's names, anyway.
See you.

@Hosch250 Command not recognized.
restarting...
