Hmmm, community project

@PeterGrace What do we do now? Pick a tag?

community-project will be the tag
but there needs to be a question that references it or the auto-cleaner will nuke the tag
so, we should come up with a good first project.

Any ideas rattling around in there?

Q: Community Project: Lets build a workbench!

Peter Grace Fundamentally, all new woodworkers need a good, solid workbench to use in the process of making other things. For woodworkers who invest in a Kreg Jig, Kreg has plans to build a simple workbench out of 2x4 construction lumber and MDF project panels for the top. See the kreg website for detail...

How's that?
Myself, I am going to go down to the workshop and play with my new veritas surface vise

a question got migrated and the asker then duped it.
mind merging them

Looks like bowlturner got it
@rob I wonder, do we want to do comprehensive build plans almost like a blog post? That feels almost like an abuse of the system.
I mean, when I illustrate my build in the answer, it seems like there is a fine line between "here's a pic, here's how I did it" and "here's step by step instructions on how to do it"

Q: How do we handle tool or construction identification questions?

robI'm splitting this question off from the original question, Are identification questions allowed?, because the answers to that question only addressed wood identification and not the other identification questions that I had really hoped to address. For example, if someone posts a picture of som...

@PeterGrace I don't think it's important to document any detail. I just think it would be useful for each person to list the tools they're using, in case someone else wants to try something that nobody else is doing.

I just posted an answer

rob
A detailed post of the entire process seems more the domain of your personal woodworking blog, which I suppose you or someone else could reference later if appropriate.
@PeterGrace I guess the point of the community projects is to generate questions for the main site, right?

I will definitely add the tools I used, that's an obvious omission there.
Yep.
And I definitely have one I'm about to ask as a result

rob
Ok, so in that case I don't think it's necessary to write a meta answer detailing or even summarizing what you learned, though it might be fun to link to the questions you generated.
@PeterGrace Did you have any ideas or other goals for which summarizing what you learned might be helpful?

6:25 PM
I'll comment in a bit, in a meeting with a guy on my team

rob
@PeterGrace hey, why do you sometimes show up in chat as Peter, and other times as Peter Grace?

I'm not sure, to be honest.

@rob I think it's just how many lines his post is?
For one liners, it's Peter <avitar>
for others it's
<avitar>
Peter Grace

Q: Is it okay to point to your own website?

dfifeI've got a website that I frequently post woodworking projects, tips, and tricks to. On occasion I've felt the need to direct people to that site but have avoided doing so to avoid coming across as one of those annoying people who posts their web address in everyone else's forum. But, I'm wonderi...

@rob I guess that having lessons learned kind of goes against the "people should ask questions about the project" kind of thing.
I just figured that if I ran into them, other people would probably run into them too.

@drs huh, interesting...

@PeterGrace FWIW, your project gave me the idea for the bench dog question, something I've wondered for a while but hadn't yet had the motivation to look up.
