Just mentioning: If any of you wonders about a “serial voting was reversed” message in your inbox: That can be related to the “cleanup action” that was announced here:
It was reported on MSO that it is possible for a user to upvote or downvote more than once on a single post (resulting in reputation changes for the author for each vote).
After some data examination, we were able to confirm that this vulnerability exists (it is happening due to race conditions s...
In the Collatz conjecture, the total stopping time is the number of iterative applications of the collatz map on a number n that is needed to get to the result 1.
Now, the total stopping time is not really a time. And if we stop there is also a matter of definition. And the phrase is rather long ...
@MartinR Not that I care the points I lost, but this idea was nonsense and may lead to the loss of many very active users. If more such things will happen , I might leave as well.
@Peter I don't mind if points from (apparently inadvertent) double upvoting are removed now. What I find very unfortunate is the “serial voting was reversed” message, it should have been something like “voting corrected, see (link to meta post)”.
I knew that post, and still wondered about the message, and how/when someone might have serial-upvoted my posts, until I realized the connection. That might annoy people ...
"serial voting" sounds like targetting voting against specific users which cannot be proven anyway as long as voting is anonym. But who knows how long this is still the case based on the changes having been made to decrease the quality of this site.
@Peter The votes reversed are flukes - there was a timing bug in SE that allowed multiple quick clicks to cast multiple votes. It seems most high rep users have receeived some such votes on their account (many lost around 200 rep or so). Probably most are done by accident, though it's possible some have exploited the bug (SE is investigating that).
I received a downvote here which I could not understand. I would like to hear opinions whether the downvote is justified. If several users disagree with the downvote, I will undelete it to allow the commenter to answer.
In searching for counter examples to the Collatz Conjecture, I have come across a family of equations with the following form. $$77D = 2(2^{a+b+c+2} + 3 * 2^{a+b+1} + 9 * 2^a + 101)$$ Where $$0>a+b+c<3$$and$$D>0$$Computationally solving for this example is relatively simple with $$a=1,b=2,c=1, D...
@Peter This issue affected very few users, most of whom have received thousands of votes in their time at SE. There are only 10 users on Math SE who have received more than 40 duplicate votes, and only one user who has received more than 100 duplicate votes.
For the vast majority of users, this will be a complete non-issue.
So someone defaced this question by removing an image link "for safety". Since I already have a close flag raised, I can't flag it for moderator attention. It's a low quality question anyway, and was answered quickly, so perhaps it should just be closed/deleted?
Btw I have a question about a specific scenario I encountered in edit reviews... So if a user has been proposing many edits to old posts (age > 1y) for formatting reasons, what should I do in the review?
@Mike Why did you remove the image link from this question? While the question is certainly not up to the standards of the site, removing the image actively dis-improved the question.
Instead of simply removing the image, why not comment to add a link to the guidance on images (or to the MathJax tutorial)? or even typeset the question for them?
@ElliotYu Are the edits improvements? or very, very minor?
If you believe that the pattern is inappropriate (say, more than five very minor edits in less than 30 minutes), please flag one of the edited posts and explain the situation.
