@alex sorry for lag. The camera I got was aliexpress.com/item/32889256192.html
Positives: 1920x1080, POE, Infrared
Negatives: It has a white light option, which is weird. Also the IR LEDs are visibly red in the dark.
I paid $38 NZ including freight.

and it needs windows weirdness?

2:36 AM
yeah for the initial setup
You could run it with a fixed IP, but that wouldn't work nicely for me
I just threw out a quick snapshot of my windows VM, did the needful, then reverted.

I think I'll get a PoE switch. It makes cabling easier.
I did not expect the Netgear box to actually draw 18W. That's probably when it is used heavily. However, Netgear seems to have disabled most power saving features of it in a firmware update. (Lots of complaints in shop comments.)

Unify scandal reduced prices for Unify and Netgear. But it seems Unify tries a price dump (75 EUR instead of 120 EUR for a fairly new device).

@gschenk I can't speak for them personally, but apparently grandstream APs may have a similar local controller software package.
Might be worth a look if you need two or more APs
If you only ever need one AP then anything's fine - the controller's smarts come into play when there are two or more APs
I run 3 because I happen to have them, and I have 2 more spare (they were cheap)
