Questions asking "Is there a way to do X?" / "Can I do X?" / "Is it possible to do X?" are rarely appropriate for the Stack Exchange format. The answer is usually "yes", but sometimes "no". Either way, the question is usually not very effective. In addition, what is usually meant is "How can I do X?", which will often, but not always, be too broad for Stack Overflow. Please edit your question to clarify what it is you want. Right now, this is a "yes"/"no" question. Please see: Why is “Is it possible to…” a poorly worded question?Makyen 53 secs ago

Hello. I'm interested in object-oriented design, however a colleague is strongly against UML, and all OOD books I've read about are UML-based. I think I'll bite, though. Does anyone know any (modern) books that are exceptions to this rule?

UML is a language that you can use to represent your designs. It is not a process or methodology.
Object-oriented design is a set of principles around the concepts of classes and objects.
Except for the fact that some UML diagrams (such as the class diagram) are designed to support object-oriented software systems, there isn't that much overlap.
