Questions asking "Is there a way to do X?" / "Can I do X?" / "Is it possible to do X?" are rarely appropriate for the Stack Exchange format. The answer is usually "yes", but sometimes "no". Either way, the question is usually not very effective. In addition, what is usually meant is "How can I do X?", which will often, but not always, be too broad for Stack Overflow. Please edit your question to clarify what it is you want. Right now, this is a "yes"/"no" question. Please see: Why is “Is it possible to…” a poorly worded question?Makyen 14 secs ago

Voting to move this post on Software Engineering because it is not a question about working code but rather programming concepts. — Spotted 29 secs ago

This question is way to broad for Stack Overflow. It may be more suited to Software Engineering. But anyway... In general it is a hard problem, apart from simple symmetrical cases like those you mention. So usually, you just have to find the solutions and count them. while this is an interesting question, I think it would fit better to programmers.stackexchange.com. I guess you'd get more answers there, too. Please link to the question, if you decide to open one. If you don't, I might some day. — Blauhirn 16 secs ago

Consider asking this question on Software Engineering instead. Stack Overflow is more for concrete questions with code, with SE.SE is more appropriate for theoretical questions, coding practices, etc. — TylerH 16 secs ago
