Hello guys, quick question: Where should I put a question like this: "What makes the programmer mindset so special ?" ? I've searched through meta and other SE sites, but honestly I didn't find a good place to put this.

2:32 PM
@gnat, that's sad. I just read the Q&A you linked, and it makes sense. This one, though, is related to programmers and career. Do you know if we have a specific SE career site anywhere ?

@Machado that question is about how programmers are special little snowflakes compared to the rest of the world

Q: Where can you ask about Career Advice?

JoeThe Help Center of Programmers specifically says not to ask for career advice but people do it anyway. Should I consider the Help Center outdated or only loosely enforced? And what about a career advice site on the network? There are 70+ sites, and most of them are for relatively narrow int...

@ratchetfreak, exactly. @gnat, I think that's exactly what I needed. Thank you sir!

@Machado doesn't make it a good question, in fact that makes it a opinion based question

@ratchetfreak, I understand. In fact, I'm reevaluating if I'm going to post it or not, because as I was writing the question it became more and more difficult to explain it. So far I haven't got a satisfying, clear and concise paragraph, so I think I'll drop it entirely. It's just so easier to discuss these things with the people from Software Engineering than my peers at work right now that the urge to ask came.

@Machado I don't think I really agree that there is much specific to programmer mindsets

@enderland the only thing that's special about programming is the strict rules that need to be followed and the pedantic asshole a cpu can be

3:31 PM
@enderland, there is. The attention to detail plus high number of variables plus crafting work plus problem solving plus a proper jargon nobody outside technology really understands makes for a unique mindset. It's almost impossible for an outsider sit on a table with programmers and just join the discussion as it's possible on the other way around.

@Machado that is the case for many professions

@enderland, I disagree. I've joined a lot of different discussions with people from other professions, human-related, technology-related, engineering-related, etc... The same case with several of my friends that are programmers. I understand that there may be confirmation bias in my case, but is it real ?

ok

structural engineering and medical care for example
the big difference from those is that programmers can do a lot of real world iterations, while the ones I mentions tend to only get a single shot

@ratchetfreak, so, do you think it's mostly confirmation bias ?

Also, beginning programmers don't do too well at stackoverflow unless they have a very specific question. You will have a much more pleasant experience at programmers stackexchange. — hoodaticus 38 secs ago
