12:00 AM
My ears are kind of ringing too, crap

Are your ears at 100 psi?

Friday I had to stop and fix stuff all day long. Today I got to get back on the horse.

@KitZ.Fox I had intussusception once; it was horrible, and then they said I was fine and sent me home only to have the second-look radiologist call me back in. New pet-scan and said it resolved itself. Such luck; could have gone horribly awry, or if found I woulda had a very unpleasant surgery. Luckily it resolved itself before anybody found it- luckily it was resolved at all.

My eldest had it when he was about three months old.
Maybe.
There was disagreement between the pediatrician and the two hospitals.

Inexplicable extreme gut pain and every doc looking at me with a lot of "Huh? You're young and healthy. You don't have anything wrong with you.. ehh we do scan? Hmm nothin' there..wat do...kthxbye? Yes; kthxbye." <-- I was less than friendly in a lot of pain with docs telling me nothing was wrong. I think they figured I was just trying to get some pills.

12:14 AM
Pediatrician sounds like a bit of a loon if he's having arguments with buildings

With the sending hospital saying yes and the receiving hospital saying no and our pediatrician pointing out that the barium enema used to make the diagnosis was 1. extremely dangerous to do without a pediatric surgeon scrubbed and ready and also probably 2. therapeutic which would explain why the receiving hospital thought we were all crazy.
But hey, the boy doesn't even remember it now.

12:26 AM
This has got to be the worst requirements document I have ever written.

@KitZ.Fox Because it's invisible?
Lol, but in all seriousness, how much is there right left to left write?

I just finished it.

Okay that was quick

They think they can build the system for $22K.

aww budgeting that's cute

12:29 AM
So I gave them an appropriate document for that, I think.
It said "Use Google Docs."

but Google Docs is free!

Yes, but I'm not.

suppose you could donate $22K to charity or something

we throw most of our dev resources at 1-2 projects at a time until they get finished or make enough progress that something else becomes top priority

I think $22K is not nearly enough. Maybe I'm the one with an unrealistic expectation.

12:32 AM
@KitZ.Fox Jimmy'll do it for 20

I'll put his name in the hat.

No no no the hat costs extra

I mean, it's half-built already. He'd just need to fill in my code.

And rewrite it in Haskell so he can understand it

rofl I just made myself laugh so hard it scared the cat.

12:34 AM
see, I need a cat
Aaron can I have your cat

Aaron's cat looks like my cat.
Hey @Peter, did you go to school in Vermont?

If I am the Peter in question then I did not :)

Yes, I was addressing you. I thought you might be the Peter Tomas Scott that I used to know.

Well now you have the rare distinction of having known two of us.

Would you like some champagne to celebrate?

12:38 AM
Well. He was a Peter T. Scott. I don't know that I knew his middle name.

Gray T. Scott.

@BarryTheHatchet Yes. Yes I would.
@BarryTheHatchet Don't mean to be unreasonable, but I still don't see any champagne in front of me. Do you have an ETA?

@PeterTòmasScott Sure. It'll be with you at 18:45.
On an undisclosed day...
In an undisclosed quantum universe...

@KitZ.Fox that would be... awkward

why would it be awkward

12:47 AM
Would it? Why?

no clue. but sure seems it'd be awkward to randomly meet someone you actually knew in real life in an online chat room for Stack Exchange...

now this is awkward

Maybe. Awkwarder if it was someone that I was complaining about.
I got naught but nice to say about Peter. He was really cool.

But he's not now?

I have no idea if he still is or not.
I haven't talked to him in years.

12:50 AM
How rude

I can't talk to everyone all the time.

Okay that was supposed to be a joke but I tried and failed to come up with the punchline
It was supposed to be something that assumed you still saw him all the time, but now just didn't talk to him when you saw him, which would be rude

OK. applauds the effort

OH well

perhaps that is the punchline

12:51 AM
hah
my entire life is the punchline -.-
at least Supergirl's on tonight
and at least I'm meeting her on Sunday whooooooo
which reminds me I need to figure out what new shirt to buy

Hmm, my unit tests are good. But perhaps generating 10kb test strings was ill-advised... Codeception appears to be making many many many copies. The PHP process is currently sitting at 640Mb in RAM
690Mb
700Mb

It's gonna explode
Codeception is apparently well-named
Peter's dead
PHP overdose

It's a nasty way to go.

@BarryTheHatchet fuck buildings. Jerks; think they get to be big and bricky and jerkfacers just because some asshole is a mason and a welder and whatever. Fuckin' buildings.

1:15 AM
codeception.com/docs/05-UnitTests#BDD-Specification-Testing What this neglects to mention is that using ->specify('') will make your unit tests take AGES. Full test suite without it runs in 903ms, with it the same tests take over 1 minute. Good bye mildly preferable syntax.

1:37 AM
@JimmyHoffa we already knew you were a loon
;-)

user15026
@RobertHarvey While I kinda get what people are trying to do here, I'm not sure how I feel about it

@JimmyHoffa so tempted to flag

lol

Q: Bamboozled by function pointers as arguments to another function within a class

user3728501I am bamboozled by function pointers. Here is an example code: #include <iostream> class test { inline void output_plumber_1(int* const arg_out, const int* const arg_in) { *arg_out = -*arg_in; } inline void input_plumber_1(int* const arg_out, const int* const ...

missed it again and you know it

Wouldn't this question be best suited for ProgrammersSO ? — Spotted 44 secs ago

10:30 AM
@gnat What's wrong?

4
Q: Protection prevention ignores deleted answers from new users

gnat Related: Prevent protecting questions under certain circumstances ...we're considering removing the option to protect from questions that haven't received at least one answer from a new user. That's a bit of a no-brainer - by definition, you can't have new users vandalizing a question with t...

yay +126 on SO already. haven't even done anything yet \o/

11:00 AM
@gnat with this image, it was totally unclear to me what you were pointing out, I started following the vein of "Ok Jimmy Page rock legend... and Johan Sebastian Bach... I guess this Adrian fellow is some musician I've never heard of?"
I mean, if 3 musician names posters all answered the same question on P.SE, you would absolutely be the one to find it and bring it to everyone's attention

a much clearer option would've been to circle the "protect" on the right and the empty space where it should be on the left, and nothing else; those two circles get the point across without distracting focus on the user names or anything else

11:21 AM
or just not post the question in the first place

Hi

hi

hello
welcome to the jungle

11:58 AM
^^^ but it was meant exactly to remind of Jimmy Page. That stupid bug in a feature that shouldn't even exist in the first place was just a cause

Interesting: cool new drone! queue.social/KN8Lhe7

12:14 PM
Oh, right. Academia.
waits for everyone else to show up

Happy Coffee Day
Shutupshutupshutup! I have something important to say!

oh god

What is more important than it being Happy Coffee Day?

It's the IDEs of March!

12:28 PM
The IDEs of March? Is that when intelliJ conspired with Eclipse to kill NetBeans?

You got it

@ThomasOwens nothing, race condition. What're you gonna do.

I'll get back to you on that.

oh hell, @ThomasOwens is blocking on a mutex. Guess the front-page will be a shitshow today.

lol, talk about a poor performance review

12:40 PM
@JimmyHoffa I'm not going to do anything...yet.

@ThomasOwens nothing in the event queue?

@ratchetfreak don't ask him to check again! You're going to deadlock him!

@ratchetfreak Nothing

god I love YouTube comments
anyway, this trailer is pretty good:

1:35 PM
I literally just wrote a "WorksheetEntryWidgetFactoryFactory"

did you use a factory to create it?

is find/replace an instance of TextFactory?

good titles are so important on SE
I'm skimming over the recently closed P.SE questions list and realizing bad titles or titles suggesting the offtopicness of a question... make me not even bother opening them to check

it is very common for me to see a certain kind of title in the feed and immediately click it with intent to nuke (though I do actually read it first to validate the assumption; it's always valid)

@Ixrec there there are these:
.. what's the question here? This is a statement, not a question. — enderland 3 mins ago
where the title suggests an interesting question... but complete letdown :(

1:50 PM
@Ixrec and at no point during that process did you want to gouge your eyes out with a soupfork? Because that's what I want to do to you after reading that.

it's not my fault our proprietary UI toolkit requires us to provide "widget factories" to customize content in the grid cells

@enderland yeah. But Scala. :/ Oh well.
@Ixrec have you tried genericizing a "WidgetFactoryizer" so you can just write normal code and compose or utilize that object somehow to create stupid factoryish things from them? Make it manage recursive graphs by tying its knot and it'll create a Factory that's as good as a FactoryFactory or a FactoryFactoryFactory

@JimmyHoffa this is possible for every widget factory except the WorksheetEntry one
if I understand you correctly
which I don't

@Ixrec unlikely, I was just stringing words together.

WordFactoryFactoryFactory

1:58 PM
@Ixrec on failure to resolve- or only a partial resolution (did it resolve to something that still doesn't complete the requirement?); return self for further resolution. This is an approach I've used in resolutiony-things like factories in the past that results in a Factory returning a Factory which returns a Factory which .. just tying the knot

SUPERGIRL
SUPERRRRRGIRL

@BarryTheHatchet don't call me that!

Happy Coffee Day!

@Ampt unacceptable!
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS OUT OF ORDER!

@JimmyHoffa Then go get some!

1:59 PM
@JimmyHoffa I can't tell if you're actually trying to help or just throwing more words out there

@Ampt was that a threat? "Get some!"

@JimmyHoffa It's a promise that your cells will start to break down if you don't ingest caffeine in the next 30 seconds.
@Ixrec Yeah but can I cast it to a TimesheetEntryWidgetFactoryFactory?

Also, @Ampt I expect you to primary today :| my wife made me do that shit (caucus - what a fukt process), and if I have to, then you other jerkfaces do too.

No? Cool, I'll just copy and paste the file and do s/Worksheet/Timesheet/g
committing it now, kthxbai

winnar

2:01 PM
that's not too dissimilar to what I'm doing...
(I'm replacing "cell template" boilerplate for one grid-like widget with "widget factory" boilerplate for a newer better grid-like widget, 99% of the real logic is already shared between these two things)

still not moving your residence huh? Holding out hope? All hope is lost. You've exited the corn fields, you will no longer be able to tolerate them...
Only steel and concrete lies in your future. At least there will be self-driving cars.

SUPERRRGIRRRRLLLLL
hey, the champagne needed finishing
hic
in hindsight I kinda wished I'd waited until today to start it, because then I could finish it tomorrow (my actual day off before travelling) rather than having a whole day off without champagne
oh well
(assuming max 2 days lifetime of open bottle)

@BarryTheHatchet you also presume you won't just get the itch and buy another bottle tomorrow. Let's make a deal: Buy one of those little drinker half-bottles like 200ml or whatever it is tomorrow instead of a whole 750 when you find your hand gravitating towards alla that; and I'll write an actor model in C++

retracted

redacted

@JimmyHoffa that's a good point
I'm up at something daft like 3am on Thursday though to get to the airport
so I'd best not be hammered on Weds
reads your suggestion
dammit, that can work

2:15 PM
@BarryTheHatchet not the four-pack :)

@JimmyHoffa bah
I'm getting terrible hangovers these days when I go out
I'm actually paranoid that I'll enjoy Chicago too much and feel like shit all weekend, ruining my photo ops
this just came up on my Quora digest qr.ae/Rc9BXJ
:sadface:

@JimmyHoffa heh, nah, I still have all my emissions equipment intact, thanks.
nor do I have truck nuts.

@BarryTheHatchet 1 glass of water per drink - put some juice or something in it for flavor and it'll slow your drinking as well as help with hangovers

@JimmyHoffa thanks mum

@KitZ.Fox My company would like to put in a bid for 15k!

2:19 PM
@BarryTheHatchet somebody needs to tell you how to not fall down go boom :P

@JimmyHoffa I will reply to this in a moment. just need to grab some more champers first

Totally calling my whiskey 'whiskers' from now on.

do you need a whiskey factory
@Rachel should we create a "programmers reopen room" for discussion of questions and trying to improve them?

@enderland Isn't that what the Whiteboard is? :)
but I don't like that idea, as reopening should be a community activity, not just something restricted to dedicated reopeners (or stay-closers)

2:32 PM
well whiteboard is... more rambling and discussion than anything else, and it's easy to get lost in those weeds imo

would rather keep conversations in meta or chat
besides, my office usually blocks SE chat rooms so I couldn't use it when at work :p

lol
ahhh, wow that person deleted it because of @RobertHarvey and me. tag teamed!

Bullies and proud. For shame.

Happy Coffee Day.

> my office usually blocks SE chat rooms
ouch

2:36 PM
@BarryTheHatchet it was a straight up "write my homework for me" problem

yeah but you don't need to be so happy about the poor bloke's misery

self deletion is far better than heavily downvoting and community deletion

@BarryTheHatchet Yeah, but I don't have to feel bad for him either.

there's no evidence of misery

@Ampt you're a sock; you have no feelings

2:38 PM
@Rachel it would be another chat room just like this one?
its more that this one has gotten rather... full lately

@BarryTheHatchet iduno, sometimes I find they feel a bit itchy.

deletion is a non-event in many forums so I tend to assume newbies unfamiliar with SE don't mind (unless they say otherwise)

hard to have discussions like you used to

@Ixrec I am willing to bet money that not having his homework done for him then being socially pressured into deleting the request, precipitates misery
Your second paragraph describes archaic customs. The world has moved on from binary gender stereotypes. — BarryTheHatchet 54 secs ago

@BarryTheHatchet Great! That's called learning!

2:39 PM
gonna have to go with the sock on that one...

@Ampt it should happen, sure
just saying we don't need to throw a party over it
a bit of empathy goes a long way

But I got all this champagne already...

the positivity was about the lack of drama involved
2

just ask Deanna Troi - she was an empath and she went all the way into space!

until drama happened in here

2:40 PM
@Ampt oh that reminds me - top up!

so that was a bit of a wash

what @Ixrec said

@Ixrec makes sense

I know that you think I'm destroying the site, but.... meh

@Ixrec when was there "drama" in here?
@enderland oh my god. once again. calm down.

2:40 PM
@Ampt Fine. I'll leave.

he thinks we're all destroying the site

chill out peoples

I like how you just proved my point lol

@KitZ.Fox Not a bad thing - just means that we need to adapt is all :)

your definition of "drama" is an odd one

2:41 PM
yes it's very mild

@Ampt which "he" :) me? or lightness?

spend a day in the Lounge then we'll talk :)
@enderland what's this... "lightness"?

used to be we would put in a screen full of messages a day and it would all be about one thing. now we can fill a screen in 10 minutes about 5 different things

his name is Supergirl
somehow

@BarryTheHatchet We didn't go to the lounge, you came to the whiteboard :P

2:42 PM
@Ampt Are you asking us to ... put a sock in it?
...

not telling anyone to stop, just saying that the way things used to be done might not work the same way now - having a seperate chat room for re-open topic might be alright

whoosh

some might say it's.... on topic
yeah, I didn't miss your pun, I just thought it was a rather weak one.

thanks

better luck next time

2:43 PM
here's hopung!

Better in what sense? I have heard that, if you don't fully embrace agile/scrum/whatever, you're not really practicing Agile. As a developer, I would be more receptive to something that helped me stay organized and cohesive within my team. I would be averse to some half-assed Agile that was just there for the sake of being Agile. — Robert Harvey 1 min ago
Hey, @Rachel.
Nice to see you in here.

Hi @RobertHarvey :)

@RobertHarvey half-assed agile - as if there was any other kind.

There is that.
Nice, Barry.

2:52 PM
he's fighting the man, man

some things we can all agree on

did spring semester just start or what?

ahhh it's an invasion on the main site

oh, sorry, I'll stop doing my real job for a minute

2:55 PM
Right? I looked and the first 4 questions were all shite

spend an hour on SO some time

ok back to work

that was actually a minute
well done

hey, thats what you get for answering every "GIMME TEH CODEZ" question :P

2:57 PM
not answering them doesn't seem to have helped you that much if you're currently under "invasion"

delete votes on programmers.stackexchange.com/q/312807/52929 and programmers.stackexchange.com/q/312810/52929 might be helpful (@Rachel you have them :)
