@rolfl I find your program significantly harder to follow than mine. This is evidenced by your abundant (needed) comments

Yeah, it is harder... I agree.
On the other hand, it is hopefully faster.... though I have not yet benchmarked yours.

@rolfl is my 0.015s properly compared to your 0.064s?

I'm using tcsh.
lte me make it bash

@rolfl good, because i don't think i have tcsh installed on this cygwin :-P

hard to compare because we don't know system stats
i know i'm doing my file i/o on an SSD

I am in the middle of my monthly backup cycl, I am hammering away on multiple raid devices, and doing large rsync's with numerous hard links.

probably best would be to just compile and run mine on your machine
i don't have java 8 installed even

Q: Thought experiment: What would happen if we didn't have close votes?

Jon EricsonAfter reading "My Love-Hate Relationship with Stack Overflow: Arthur S., Arthur T., and the Soup Nazi" one of our developers wondered what would happen if we didn't have close votes. Disclaimer: I don't know of any actual plans to actually get rid of close votes. Like legalizing marijuana, a chan...

@durron597 - Hmmm. My solution is many times slower than yours.

psr
@MichaelT I think there is a new program that is just a hair off of perfect play in 2 player hold 'em (academic paper with a proof). Seeing what it does vs. various hands ought to be interesting.

12:32 AM
@rolfl That's pretty nice work.
I'm trying not to look at the code too closely, because I'm going to steal your 64 bit idea, but write my own hand detectors.

user55340
Need to boot up the desktop and fix my perl implementation of PE54... its... interesting IIRC.

user55340
(I converted the hand into a string and sorted them)

1:21 AM
@RobertHarvey just don't have a heart attack or I'm gonna tell the Bob's what I really think of this place.

1:32 AM
How to pick m-tuples out of an array of size n, m<n?

1:49 AM
@deostroll you're going to have to be more specific
is n a multiple of m such that n = ma for some integer a?
if that's true you could computer the factors of n and try them all
of course that probably means that there is some a which works such that n = m(bc) such that b, c are integers and a=bc
which means that theres no real way to solve the problem
E.G. A is not prime.
ah, you can just test if n%m is 0, if it's not, it doesn't work

2:22 AM
This is a C(n,r) problem...
I guess...
Hence it should not matter if m is a multiple of n...

2:43 AM
you are really being quite vague. Can an element in one tuple be present in another?
Do they have to be sequential?
can you leave some elements out of a tuple?
In other news I found out my jeep doesn't have the fanciest 4x4 system... I'm lacking an electronically locking rear differential...
queue one sad grown man

user41796
@Ampt You can still drop into 4x4 while moving, right?

It's full time 4x4
it's just that the front and rear differentials are always open

user41796
Ah, ok.

user41796
Never mind me then. Not like you would have anyway. :-D

the center transfer case has two clutches to determine where power should go
the next step up has an electronic locker in the back to prevent wheel slip back there

user41796

You should trade yours in and get a better one then.

I thought it came standard with my trim... but it doesn't :(
I ALREADY HAD THAT IDEA OK

user41796
And here I was thinking I was going to troll you with that....

My girlfriend would literally and unceremoniously murder me

user41796
She's probably right on that one

Like, for real. with a wooden spoon
I've been reading up on the jeep forums and they have a group buy going... I could have gotten the next trim up for about the same price

ugh... so learned.

user41796
At least you can afford booze to drown your sorrows, right?

yes.. yes I can
I'll have to get more next week though
the whiskey tap is running dry

user41796
it's all good. Does Trader Joe's in your neighborhood sell booze?

user41796
Their house label stuff is usually pretty good

2:50 AM
I haven't seen one.... I'll have to look

user41796
I'd think you'd have one back home; not sure about your client site.

client site - no
back home - also no
gotta head up to MKE to get one I think

@Ampt: It's a question of motivation, Bob.

user41796
@Ampt so it's our fault you didn't research things enough? :-P

2:58 AM
@GlenH7 clearly. You're the one with the superpowers after all
what's the point of "electing" mods if we can't hold them accountable
(I use that term loosely)

user41796
"blah blah blah" Were you saying something there?

user41796
All I heard was some noise.

USE YOUR SUPER HEARING GLEN

you mods with all your abuse
@JimmyHoffa I swear, you send that to me in a frame and I will hang it on this apartment wall
I will do so candidly, without hesitation

I have a roommate who may or may not appricate my honesty

I need to drink more, but I feel silly drinking alone here in my sad apartment

@AshleyNunn You know, I drink alone and never get that way... is that bad?

user15026
@Ampt hahaha no never

probably because I'm usually on the internet chatting to someone

user41796
@AshleyNunn You're not alone; we're all here too.

user15026
3:14 AM
@Ampt I mean even when I am chatting to @WorldEngineer it still feels weird

I don't have a problem, but if I did, alcohol is definitely my solution of choice.

user41796

user41796

It doesn't, btw.

user15026
@GlenH7 No worries :) I was amused

user15026
@GlenH7 Which?

user55340
Still think you should take a road trip to visit him if you have no employment obligations when the time comes.

user41796
@AshleyNunn doesn't cure anything

user55340
And then you can learn about Southern Comfort.

user15026
@GlenH7 oh, that I know now

user15026
@MichaelT The problem is I need money to do that

user41796
3:17 AM
@AshleyNunn Can be a hard lesson to figure out

user55340
@AshleyNunn sell cupcakes on the way.

user15026
@GlenH7 It was...

.... is alcohol the solution to that? it appears that cupcakes was the correct answer...

user15026
@MichaelT I've always wanted a food truck

user41796
@Ampt Nah, liquor laws get in the way of selling stuff. And every state is different with their laws

user15026
3:18 AM
I would sell various cereals and milk and fruit and stuff in the AM, then cupcakes later

woah there buzz killington

user55340
Though note, if you've got an E85 vehicle... some vodka and bio desiel made from poutine fries...

why can't a man enjoy a morning cupcake
@MichaelT a buddy of mine was telling me about his uncles tractor that had knobs to let you run different fuels... everything from crude oil to ethanol

user15026
@Ampt I just always liked the idea of a cereal truck but I will save some cupcakes hidden for you

user55340
You know Georgia needs to be introduced to poutine.

3:19 AM
ok deal.

user15026
@MichaelT I did make @WorldEngineer try some while he was here!

@MichaelT do you want georgia to die? becuase that's how you get it.

user55340

user55340
@Ampt Georgia would survive... its Alabama that would have trouble.

Wooo Wisconsin, Still not Mississippi®

3:24 AM

@GlenH7: How do you respond to a company's request to "Tell us why you want to come work for us," when you don't even know anything about the company yet?
(in cover letters, specifically)

4:20 AM
@RobertHarvey Excuse me, that's a couple couple snootfuls to you
@RobertHarvey I would probably say just guess about what it is they do (you know, on some basic level) and explain how your skillset fits with that
they want someone who's been to the moon - god damnit you're the bestest little lunar lander there ever was
and honestly, who goes to the moon without a lunar lander?!
((besides kerbals, but thts another story)

I'll have a couple of shots before I write my next cover letter.

now you're talking my language
I wonder if you could just mail some shots to the guy reading it
like those little airplane ones
NOTE: Before reading, please drink these

Q: If I insert an image and video into an Android Studio application, where will it be stored?

Please HelpI would like to know if where an image and a video would be stored if I created an app using App Studio??? Is it possible to create a basic app with no programming experience within 3 months??? Should I use eclipse or Android Studio??? Thanks, I know I should have posted this on the programme...

Please Help me close this question?!
No?

Another weird user name. I smell a pattern.

@GlenH7 [from our earlier conversation about ASP.NET] I found a useful thing: HostingEnvironment.MapPath() method. It's static and it doesn't require the request object.

What is the "usual" place to store configuration in a clientside javascript app?
of course, I am coming from a yeoman background...
yo + angular
I know this is usually done with json...but where do we store it?

several options:
cookies
server side and queried/stored with ajax
and local storage
or do you mean outside a html page?

All I can think of is to research them as best you can. And if possible, try to tie your experience into their domain. Seems a bit unusual in my book as it's either something that ought to already be understood or not worth commenting on.
The impression I get is it sounds like an overly needy junior high kid saying "tell me why I'm so special!!!" But I could also see a company stuck in new-age saying "tell us why we're so awesome and how you're going to be awesome too 'cause that's really awesome and we all want to be awesome!!!"

mfw a text editor is so complicated that it requires its own SE site

1:19 PM
@maple_shaft avoids it from cluttering superuser.SE

I'm glad that someone mentioned AUTOSAR in that automotive question.
In other news, I really want to use a specification language to define requirements.
I'm going to try to start learning Z. Because why not?
This brings up a question...if I have questions about Z notation, where do I ask? Stack Overflow because it's a language with its own rules and tools or Programmers because it's requirements engineering?

1:36 PM
SO if it is a concrete question

Sweet. There's even an Eclipse plugin for Z.

But when describing subsections of section 2 of the SRS, it says that an example of the contents of the user interface section is "a requirement for the option of long or short error messages" and the contents of the site adaptation requirements section defines "the requirements for any data or initialization sequences that are specific to a given site, mission, or operational mode".
IEEE Std 830-1998 is a mess. At one point, it says that section 2 of the SRS "describes the general factors that affect the product and its requirements" but that the section "does not state specific requirements".
It also isolates performance requirements from software system attributes.
What makes performance requirements different than reliability requirements, availability requirements, security requirements, and so on? They are all non-functional requirements of the software.

user114359
@MichaelT that was pretty good timing. We voted to close that question at literally the exact same second: programmers.stackexchange.com/q/110160/22815

It also calls out things that don't make sense for an SRS. Like a product functions section that provides "a summary of major functions that the software will perform". This would likely be a duplication of content in a project plan, higher level requirements, a vision and scope document. It even says that "sometimes the function summary that is necessary for this part can be taken directly from the section of the higher level specification (if one exists)..."

user55340
@Snowman heh. Jinx in close reasons.

I need to find a copy of IEEE Std 29148-2011.

2:59 PM
@Snowman zulu timestamp says 1 second apart

user114359
@ratchetfreak @MichaelT it really only matters because we both took the time to type a custom close reason.

3:21 PM
@GlenH7 It's a company that makes computer games, so maybe that explains a few things (they also ask that you list the games you play in the cover letter).

user41796
@RobertHarvey Despite generally being sweat shops, they continue to be the darling of newcomers into the industry. That explains the attitude.

Doesn't sound like a very nice place to work.

user41796
I'd hope that their particular niche is mellowing out a bit, but I tend to doubt it

Well, I drew the expected downvote:

A: Best practice for MVC + EF

Robert HarveyIn general, you don't need to use Using statements with Entity Framework data contexts. Lazy collections is one of the reasons why. So your code would simply be: <HttpGet> Public Function Schedule(ByVal id As Int64) As ActionResult Dim model As Schedule = Nothing Dim database As dataC...

MUST TO USING USING WITH IDISPOSABLE! GOR BASH HEAD! RAWRR!

user41796

I am surprised your answer was downvoted but not the question

That's just a bad title. I can fix that.

@RobertHarvey look up EA spouse. Stay away from the game industry unless you really want to be in it and subject yourself and family to that.

user114359
to be fair that article is an old one and allegedly EA have fixed a lot of those problems, but I hear it is still a stressful career.

user55340
Game industry is still the most stressful part of the sector.

user55340
Especially big name places with must be out by Christmas, multiple million budgets, and countless customers (who have little else to do beyond criticize your work)

game design is not for wimps

@GlenH7 no problem. just wonder if Jeff knew he was suggesting that or not. And that others should realize it's importance.

Today's question: to (Amazon) Prime or not to Prime?

user41796
@Ampt - did you re-up your prime membership despite the bump in cost for you?

user55340
4:18 PM
Can you get a new jeep with prime?

A friend of mine overnighted a lawnmower for $3.99 a few years ago

user41796
@MichaelT Did you see last night's conversation about electronic locking differentials?

user41796

Ampt must have one hell of a headache.

user41796
He's young. He can recover quickly. :-)

user55340
4:26 PM
@GlenH7 I had some well played comments in there.

user41796
I loved that he had already considered trading in the current car because of the differential (non-)issue

user114359
@GlenH7 I easily end up saving money with Prime even after the rate hike.

user114359
Between streaming to my Roku and getting stuff like an 80 lb electric smoker delivered for "free" it is worth it.

user41796
That's good to know. I generally haven't bought that much, or I save up my purchases in order to qualify for free shipping.

I probably should read the Evans book before answering any more DDD questions.

user41796
4:30 PM
@RobertHarvey It's a cult movement, and answers are expected to espouse the party line.

user41796
@Snowman quantity / quality of streaming is good?

user114359
@GlenH7 it is hit or miss, depends on what you want to watch. Honestly my wife does most of the streaming but I Know she is happy with it

@GlenH7 trading it in seemed like less work than swapping the differential, running the wiring and flashing my chip with the right program :(

user114359
I just like buying whatever I want whenever I want it and not trying to stack it to get supersaver shipping which invariably takes even longer

user55340
Don't go flashing in the winter.

user41796
4:34 PM
@Snowman I'd probably be more interested in the music streaming. Don't watch a lot of video / tv anymore

user41796
@Ampt Where's the challenge in that?!

user114359
@GlenH7 I think you can view the catalog before you buy

But the summit comes with headlamp washers .... You guys all suck
@RobertHarvey also yes, this morning was rough

user114359
I honestly don't stream music from Amazon. Between my personal music collection and SiriusXM I don't have much need.

user41796
That's fair enough. I stream a fair amount while at work

4:37 PM
I love me some spotify
Also yes, I just renewed at 100 bucks according to my bank
I probably use Amazon twice a month and the two day shipping is pretty boss

@Snowman amazon auto-delivers like monthly TP, cat food, cat litter, dog food, paper towels, dish detergent, laundry detergent... prime savings on all that shipping pays for itself

I've had amazon prime for a while, not sure I'll renew it again but it's really convienent and saves a lot of my time going to stores/etc

user41796
Sounds like a $100 experiment I may try for a year then

user114359
@JimmyHoffa yeah I forgot about that, I have a few subscriptions too. Cheap and convenient.

user114359
4:52 PM
You know what makes me happy? When code passes a code review with the whole team putting their stamp of approval on it, then someone else goes in and moves test data from the test class into the "real" class. SRP much?

user41796
Ugh

perhaps it's time to work on @Duga's filter again...
