Q: High Level and Low Level usually refer to the level of abstraction. Do they have another meaning?

ProgThe terms 'high level' and 'low level' usually refer to the 'level of abstraction' of something. However, I'm starting to think maybe these terms have another definition. In the past month I've been studying concepts of Object Oriented design, and came across something that confused me. I was le...

I think we're being trolled.

12:55 AM
I think the problem with that question is assuming high level and low level are terms that are somehow only applied to a programming context. You can't define "high level" in general terms anymore than you can define what a "modern" language is. Context is everything and within different contexts different definitions are appropriate.

@Seanny123 don't worry, your question looks reasonably good to me, and your explanation in comments looks compelling. My note wasn't meant to insist that it should be at SO, I only wanted to clarify why you posted it here
@YannisRizos the reason may be that q-banned guys post questions that are way too low quality for voters to consider migration. actually what made me ask for this data is striking similarities in crappy questions I deal with in SO CV queue, and those that flood our site recently. In a sense, these belong to neither of SO / Programmers, right site for them would be /dev/null

MainMaWorking as a freelancer, I often see strange requests from my customers, some of which can negatively affect my daily work¹, and others trying to set some sort of control. @HarryKitchener there is a degree of trust there

@ratchetfreak Ok, well I am a 15 year old programmer and I wanted to get into a little bit of freelancing. I doubt many clients will trust me if I charge per the hour due to my age, should I charge a one off payment?

user55340
That works too. Make sure you've got a very specific description of exactly what you are going to do.

2:11 PM
Do you have any idea of how much one would charge for a simple HTML, CSS and JS website? I will obviously decrease the price a tad due to my age

user55340
@HarryKitchener It depends on how long you think it will take to do.

Ok, do you know how much the average is?

user55340
And what your time is worth...

user55340
There is no 'average'. You figure out how much your time is worth, estimate the size of the project, add in a bit of profit for that time spent, and then quote that.

@MichaelT Thanks for all of the help indeed

Management. RT @lizardbill: What's the term for estimating how long it should take someone else to fix a bug in code you've never seen?
More management than freelancing probably

user55340
Freelancing implies a degree of client management - and you're your own manager too.

are you a freelancer?

user55340
Nope - but I do a lot of estimates.

user55340
"How long will this take" is an essential part of proper resource planning for any project.

you're a manager then...

3:54 PM
did you look at the Ninject sample?

user55340
Project manager asks me "how long will feature XYZ take" and I say "It may take 1 to 3 days"

user55340
Knowing and understanding estimation is good at all levels.

Pretty dumb and moot but illustrates the point of that nothing is too small for IoC really
a matter of taste more I think

I have a story about estimation and planning.
So, we get a new delivery date and a set of things (bugs to be fixed, new features to be added, whatever) that the customer wants. The first pass is the lead for each major component estimating them to figure out a very rough approximation to determine if the request is anywhere close to feasible for the deadline. They are usually pretty good, but not always.
So, we have a meeting to go over this high level task hierarchy based on dependencies and scheduling and so on. And the lead throws up the Microsoft Project with the first pass estimates real quick. An engineer is like "where can I get this so I can review your estimates?"
Before anyone else can say anything, I'm all "you don't get this - just go through the assigned tasks in the tracker and estimate them as best you can". People were kind of stunned by this, but I argued that I don't want to be influenced by what management said in their initial plans when I come up with estimates.
The End.

Makes perfect sense to me

user55340
4:22 PM
@JohanLarsson I'd strongly suggest giving amazon.com/Software-Estimation-Demystifying-Developer-Practices/… a read. Its good read and quite appropriate for developers (there's a section in there about the politics of estimation from the developer's perspective)

@ThomasOwens Well done! So often estimation is mostly a political game "how long will this take you? By the way I promised it would go live in 6 weeks."

@psr Yeah. I try to fight for things that make sense. I do understand the need for early rough estimates, as long as the people who present those estimates make the right assumptions, document their assumptions, and present it as a rough estimate.
