but then this isn't politics.se so I'll just say "That's my opinion" and go enjoy the weather outside (28f and dropping woo!)

On one side it's bad, on one side it's good. Conglomeration has probably lowered prices in the short-term, whether the long-term impacts of reduced bargaining power overcomes that short-term drop in price is something I haven't read about.
It'd be interesting.

i used to be quite politically minded. but as i've got older i've realized that unless i own a international media conglomerate. no one's going to give a crap. So, ill just sit back and watch the show.
passes the popcorn

Infrastructure regulation and organization ain't really a political thing (at least in my mind), it's a coordination thing. Whether it is good or bad shouldn't have anything to do with politics, and everything to do with quantifiable good.

the other major issue, is that for most of the population, things like net neutrality is like talking about rocket science or neurosurgery. they dont understand, and dont care.
at least until it effects their duck dynasty viewing
anyway :)
time for me to get back to work

@MattD Rocket surgery is really not that hard given a proper understanding of metric to imperial conversion and a flame retardant scalpel O_O

12:02 AM
the next 10 years are going to be very interesting. watching the fallout of the NSA revelations, the death of cable tv, the fazing out of fossil fuel cars, and "bandwith wars".
i suggest stocking up on popcorn

I strongly doubt fossil fuel cars are going to go away. Natural gas is too cheap. And auto-driven cars will turn public transportation on its head, making coordinating large fleets of auto-driven taxis more economical than buses.

do you live in america?

No, I live in Japan.

ah. so you know how expensive fuel is

All the more reason we'll never see auto driving cars

12:04 AM
(which is one country that may try to phase out fossil fueled cars, but with the nuclear plants in limbo, it would be silly to burn fuel to make electricity to run electric cars)

well, i really mean petrol driven ars.
we might see natural gas, or more hybrids

Many (most?) taxis in Korea run on LNG
or some sort of natural gas.

a lot of taxis here do too
most taxis here now are hybrids
what we really need is hybrids with induction based charging from your carparking spot.
my commute will be about 15 miles.
could do that on electricity alone!

I wonder how hybrids will hold up long-term. Batteries are expensive, how will hybrid technology hold up over the long-haul?

and yeah. the whole fukushima thing is a bit weird
i have no idea how thats reported in japan

12:07 AM
it isn't a major thing compared to how it's reported overseas
(but let's not get in to that)

battery tech and fusion. where are you back to the future!

In general, I think that in the mid-term shale gas will dramatically decrease the cost of fossil fuels. As natural gas gains traction in the US, demand for coal will drop (it already has started to) increasing consumption of coal in the EU.

id rather nuclear plants that coal ones ;)
but yeah. lots of fracking going on

Nuclear plants take decades to plan and build.

and while mining engineers convince me that its ok. im healthily skeptical

12:09 AM
And most of Europe seems bent on getting rid of them, not increasing their number
(see: Germany, France)

curious

No opinion on the long-term effects of fracking. I am not going to guess. What I do know is people love cheap energy.

actually, as my coffee kicks in. hows the solar uptake in japan?

People have them on their houses. Sometimes. But really, renewables have a hard cap of about 10%-20% of the total capacity before they start causing coordination issues

its picked up quite dramatically here. its been interesting

12:11 AM
(the grid isn't designed with renewables in mind, and what ends up happening is that the increase in renewable capacity means that there has to be an increase in inefficient quick-starting peaker plants to balance load, which kind of defeats the point)

yeah. storage becomes an issue

Where are you?

au

Yeah, compressed air seems to be the best bet for now.

some smart person is going to revolutionize energy storage. and make bazillions. until then..
probably something to do with the kinetic potential of cats and toast + butter

12:14 AM
I am not going to be an idiot and doubt the capacity of human beings to create some awesome stuff, but that is a huge engineering challenge which is probably a ways off.
Almost all the low hanging fruit as far as increasing efficiency has been picked already. The only generation we use that has been around for less than 100 years is nuclear.

yep, we've pretty much leveraged our current understanding of the universe
unless we can make fusion work. which is still science fiction land

I think that the 21st century will see a huge uptick in decentralized generation through cheaper and cheaper renewables for the developing world, which would be awesome.

which would, interestingly, put them in a better position going forward than a huge centralized grid

user20683
@MattD Not quite. I've read reports of a small positive energy reaction

Hopefully coupled with increases in connectivity for isolated regions that allows small villages to self-organize and create a local infrastructure to create cheap and accessible education even for the super-poor.

12:16 AM
@WorldEngineer me too. there's positive noises. but its a long way away from "hey lets build a reactor and make some power boys!"

@WorldEngineer Yes. It is called a Hydrogen Bomb. Though I wouldn't call it 'small'.

user20683

user20683
@jmac Not quite

user20683
see the link

it appears easier to work on reducing power consumption and efficiency of devices, than working on generating and storing more power
which is an interesting proposition
and one which is pretty awesome too

12:18 AM
That is good news for fusion. Still don't think I'll see it in my lifetime.

user20683
I've seen articles on how if everyone in the U.S. quit putting ice in their drinks, we'd become an energy exporter again.

i think our generation(s) will just miss a whole bunch of things. one of them is fusion ;)

With the shale gas revolution, there's a good chance it will happen with ice in people's drinks.
(and anyway, when people make silly assumptions about how much energy is used making ice, they ignore the realities of how energy supply and demand works, and why it doesn't actually work that way)

user20683
@jmac Shale gas has a whole host of issues.

As I said, I'm not going to speculate on the issues with fracking, I just know that people love cheap energy (and ice in their drinks).
And after the US has finished being the guinea-pig for widespread fracking, countries with huge reserves (like Poland, UK) could give it a shot themselves and totally flip the energy situation in Europe on its head (Europe being highly dependent on Russia for gas)

12:21 AM
that might actually save the UK economy
considering they dont actually produce anything other than quiet dispair

If the UK economy is bad, what do you call the other economies in Europe?
(southern Europe)

terrifying
uk makes money by being a conduit through which money moves

Yes, and that is great because it means the UK has a lot of control over capital flows and can use that to its advantage when coupled with the ability to control its own currency.

germany are kinda holding the fort

(don't get me started. Austerity was a dumb dumb idea)

12:25 AM
yeah.
as I said, ill be over here with some popcorn, dodging the fallout

You can't have a giant group of countries with a shared currency and no sharing of wealth from the rich to the poor members of that group. If the US had a shared currency but no redistribution from the federal government, it wouldn't work. I think the figure was something like 15-20% of the GDP of poor states has been redistributed from the rich
(I should really find the article)

going to be an interesting couple of decades for sure
also reason 3924082309423 not to have kids for me ;)
how's japan these days?
i really need to get my tail back there at some point

It's japan? I don't know how to answer.

are people happy? upbeat? or is the mood sour?
fun place to live?

It has its ups and its downs as a place to live, but I've been here a decade so I am not sure I'm qualified to know the difference anymore.
As far as people being happy/upbeat, the general feel from me is: over 50, happy. Under 50, unhappy.

12:30 AM
hah. course you are. I've lived here for most of my life. and its slowly growing up from a country town to a moderately sized city. its also become one of the most expensive places to live in the world, without actually realizing it until its way too late. and people are starting to look for the exits

Vienna?

brisbane, australia ;)

Oh, AU, woops

great place in terms of quality of life. but ridiculously expensive

I hear that beer is expensive.
Even more so than Japan.

12:31 AM
everything is expensive

I don't care about everything

how much do you pay for beer in japan?

In your average bar you'll get a glass of beer (330 ml give or take) for about 500 yen ($5 US)
So an imperial pint will run you around 650-700 yen ($6.50/$7 US)

you'll pay at least 8$ for a pint of beer here. if its of decent quality. usually 10$ or up

Yeah, see? That isn't okay.
That's above Scandanavian price-levels.

12:33 AM
yeah

The British are a civilized bunch. Under 3 pounds a pint of bitter. How can you not love that country?

coffee is 4$ for a large coffe
well, 3 pounds is how much us? almost 8?

Errr, I don't know. The last time I was in London it was 110 yen/pound

the problem is you have to be in england to drink beer in england

of course it was 75 yen/dollar
3 GBP = 5 USD give or take

12:34 AM
and its only worth being in england during the two weeks of Wimbledon because there's sunshine.

At least it isn't 12 billion degrees as it probably is in Brisbane at the moment.

its actually overcast atm. prob mid to high 20's max. its the humidty that gets you though. it was 42 last weekend (deg C). got up to 49 in some country places.

Yeah. That isn't okay. I'm much better with the colder climates. I really don't know what you're supposed to do when it gets up over 32-33 degrees. Too hot.

stop moving, find aircon. sleep
yeah. above 35 is just stupid.
but im fine up to that point.
ok. i'd better get some work done :) enjoy your afternoon :)

@jmac forbes.com/sites/jonbruner/2011/10/20/… - some neat graphics in there too.

user55340
For example, the timing of pulses from the damns on Columbia to be able to handle the various demands, and also predicting wind speeds from those - don't want to put too much power in the grid (seriously, bad things happen).

user55340
1:01 AM
@MattD Had wind chills of -40 (F=C) and below last week...

damn

user55340
Yea, -40 is one of those funny numbers.

user55340
There were news articles about how it was warmer in Antarctica than Minnesota (to be fair, the station they were reporting from was on the shore and it is summer down there...)

user55340
The weather of the thing was that the polar vortex dipped south a bit. So the air mass that should have been sitting on the north pole was sitting a bit further south.

yep
welcome to climate change!

user55340

user55340
The high temp that day was 0F.

i dont really comprehend F
0F means nothing to me

user55340
Its actually quite easy when you think about how the scale was calibrated.

against the freezing point of alcohol?
i much prefer DegC ;)

user55340
The cold end point was (lore has it) either the coldest Faringheight could get it, or the coldest day of the winter. The high point was either body temp (he had a fever) or the hottest day of summer.

user55340
1:09 AM
The scale from 0 - 100 F represents the range of human habitability.

user55340
(the coldest he could get it being a salt water solution)

user55340

user55340
So, we're having a much colder then average winter here.

yep
and we're hotter than average here

user55340
About average for snowfall... which is good, we need the snow pack.

user55340
1:13 AM

snowfall has been interesting
a lot of places have had a bad snow year comparitively

user55340
Snowfall -> water table for growing year.

user55340

user55340
That year was a bad summer for farmers.

user55340
(though honestly, last year wasn't much better... late storms made it hard to get the fields planted in time - lot of stunted corn fields)

user55340
1:15 AM

@MichaelT This is awesome

its likely to get worse
also a co-worker has discovered the joy of sharing a db context across multiple threads
>_<

user20683
@MattD Time to go get that 8 dollar beer.

user55340
The congenital climates are the ones that are going to get hit hard as they're already the extreme ones. Maritime climates have the ocean to buffer them. They'll get hotter... but not as extreme, and the cold won't be as devastating.

user55340
A humid continental climate (Köppen prefix D and a third letter of a or b) is a climatic region typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. Precipitation is relatively well distributed year-round in many areas with this climate, while others may see a marked reduction in wintry precipitation and even a wintertime drought. Snowfall, regardless of average seasonal totals, occurs in all areas with a humid continental climate and in many such places is more common than rain during the height of wi...

user55340
1:20 AM
(that said, I don't want to diminish the effects they will feel - most of the world's population lives in maritime rather than continental climates... but the food supply...)

yes. the food supply is what worries me about this whole polar vortex thing

user55340
On the flip side... that cold weather likely had about an 80% mortality on the emerald ash borer!

user55340
The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a green beetle native to Asia and Eastern Russia. Outside its native region, the emerald ash borer (also referred to as EAB) is an invasive species, and emerald ash borer infestation is highly destructive to ash trees in its introduced range. The Emerald Ash Borer was first discovered in America in June 2002 in Michigan. It is believed to have been brought to America unintentionally in ash wood which was used to stabilize crates during shipping. Life cycle A. planipennis may take one or two years to complete its life-cycle depending on 1) ...

no idea what that is

user55340
> Killed tens of millions of ash trees in southeastern Michigan alone, with tens of millions more lost in Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Quebec, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

1:24 AM
damn
ash is nice too
(i like guitars)

user55340
So, the -20 F lows... that will kill MANY of them.

@MichaelT Really. This is an awesome article. Thanks for sharing! This explains it all oh-so-well.

user55340
@jmac You're welcome... my great unemployed road trip, I spent a bit of time on the Columbia river. Very interesting place and the science behind it is fascinating.

user55340
(ad the news program about the cold weather and invasive insects - sciencefriday.com/segment/01/10/2014/… )

yeah. our climate encourages invasive pests
they're like HOLY CRAP ITS BEACH WEATHER WOOOO
oh dear

Q: what is the difference between a software engineer and project manager?

robert lewisI understand that a software engineers job is to work with all aspects of developing and supporting a software system. How does a project manager fit/work with a software engineer in a small team (5 or less) environment?

1:46 AM
@MattD NOT TO BE UNDERESTIMATED.

i was also trying to make a subtle wood pun there
but no one got it

Why yes, that is Whiskey in my mug.

Could anybody help somebody who's nearing 30 hours of code in the last 40 and has lost his marbles?
I'm trying to deploy the output from my addles brain - to IIS

user55340
Linus on git

user55340

1:51 AM
It serves static files but 404's on asp .net aspx files

user55340
@RobD when you say IIS or asp... I'm going to say up front "not me".

Thx -MichaelT

its probably a permissions problem

@RobD Which windows version?
Often times you'll get that if you haven't yet installed the correct IIS features

It's IIS 7 on Server 2012

1:56 AM
some versions come with it some don't

It s a production server with several functiongin sites

@RobD go to your programs and features area, dig into the IIS details and find ASP/ASP.NET and other such stuff
Whoa!

I know :-)

Sorry about that, bug in the bits I guess.
404 on aspx files... could be a million things

user15026
Okay, I need some random advice - I was thinking of applying to jobs in Toronto and then likely moving there if something works out. Is this a stupid plan?

1:57 AM
I've checked handler mappings, folder level permissions, anonymous auth user

user15026
(I am in Kitchener, for reference)

user55340
@AshleyNunn Nope.

user55340
And... thats not too far apart. You could even do that as a commute for awhile if you wanted (but then I learned about commutes in CA... the US one, California)

@AshleyNunn You kitchen?

user15026
@MichaelT Okay. Small-town me is being all panicked over the idea of it, but I thought it was pretty practical as far as things went.

user15026
1:59 AM
@JimmyHoffa Where else am I going to bake awesome cake? :)

I'm a programmer, I program....you kitchen...

user15026
@MichaelT It is a thing I can theoretically do as a stopgap, yeah.

user20683
@JimmyHoffa You steak though, that's like kitchening

user55340
I mean, yea, its a bit of a commute... but its not that bad.

user55340
I worked with a guy who did Minneapolis - Eau Claire as a commute for some reason.

user15026
2:01 AM
@MichaelT There's a GO train, and Greyhound. :)

user15026
Hell, I live near both those stations here.

@WorldEngineer Yes, I steak and whiskey. These are tangentially related to kitchening I guess

user55340

Thx @JimmyHoffa - Event Viewer showed me the way; assembly missing

@RobD Dun dun dunnnn

user55340
2:03 AM
(ug google maps new thing)... he did 1h 15m with no traffic. When there was traffic, it was sometimes a 2.5h each way trip.

@RobD hopefully you don't need to turn on fusion logging to figure a binding error

user20683
I have realized that I can close the "Gimme codes, no effort, I have problem please solves" can be closed as "Too Broad".

user55340
@WorldEngineer You been following that bit on MSO?

user20683
@MichaelT no?

@JimmyHoffa for today 02h00, I'm content I don't need anythign more than ctrl-v

They recently juggled their off topic reasons.

user20683
Also I posted an answer on SO that got downvoted for being "right"

it solved the problem but wasn't optimal or something

Q: What close reason to use for "Debug my Website" questions

TRiG is Timothy Richard Green Hi! Here's a link to my website. Something in the HTML/CSS/Javascript isn't working. Can you tell me what? This type of question is obviously not useful, as once a fix has been provided, the website will presumably be updated to incorporate it. And then later it'll be completely redesigned. ...

Q: How to handle debug-my-code-for-me questions

Steven DoggartI see questions like this occasionally, where it amounts to little more than a bunch of code. Usually there are some end-user details, like, when I click this button, it doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Actually, the question to which I linked is a bit better than usual. At least he attemp...

user55340
Though SO seems to be going with the "unclear" approach.

user20683
either one works really

mmm whiskey

user55340
And then the new one:

user55340
> This question was caused by a problem that can't be reproduced or a simple typographical error. While similar questions may be on-topic here, this one was solved in a manner unlikely to help future readers. This can often be avoided by identifying and closely inspecting the shortest program necessary to reproduce the problem before posting.

user55340
2:08 AM
I keep wondering if we need a "help/really-dont-ask" page so that we can list out the off topic reasons.

user55340
The other one that (the recent stuff) crops up is SO types expecting all the other sites to be the way they expect them to be.

We can edit the custom off topic reasons into a page in the FAQ or something I recall as I asked on meta about doing so
I think it's a great idea

Q: "What reasons do questions get closed for here?" should be in the help center under the "Asking" heading

Jimmy HoffaOur new off-topic close reasons have come in so handy and been so well used I think they do a good job of giving clear guidance to many on what they can expect they should avoid. Granted they're a subset, but they were chosen due to being such an extremely common subset. Given that, I think we s...

user55340
@AshleyNunn going back to your question... if you can get a job in Toronto, by all means do so. Its a wonderful city (I'm sure you know). An hour away from your current residence isn't that far (either for commute or for visiting). The more different types places you live, the more aware of an individual you will become (and thats a good thing).

user55340
I grew up ~30 min outside of Madison, WI. Neighbors lived half a mile (about a kilometer to one significant digit) away. I lived in the suburbs of Silicon Valley (San Francisco) for a bit over a decade. Now I live in a small city where the next largest population center is an hour and a half away and my parents are two and a half hours away. All of these are important places to realize where you've been and your history. I can kind of feel the big city, the small town, the farmers...

user55340
Unless you get lucky, the small towns and small cities tend not to have the tech jobs in them. Sure, there's the mom and pop shop that wants a web page... but thats... the equivalent of mowing lawns or shoving sidewalks for tech workers. The odd job that brings in some money, but not a dependable career. Lawns and sidewalks are more dependable (you know how long and how much and snow and grass are always there)

user55340
If you want a tech job, often you have to go to it. Telecommuting is still an ideal, not often realized. Or rather, when it is there are other factors at work too. The office interactions are important, especially for a full time employee.

I've traveled a bit. It gives a different perspective to life.

user55340
I haven't lived in the east coast big cities... don't particularly want to at this point in my life either... but its something that I'm aware of.

user55340
I've worked with people (in every area) who hadn't been more than an hour away from their birth place except maybe once a year on a vacation.

user15026
@MichaelT I grew up in a town of maybe 200 (two churches, a cattle farm in the town limits), and now I live in a city of 300kish, and which I know I could live in a bigger city, most people I grew up with live within a postal code of where they were born

@MichaelT When I had a car, I did the same. (I do the same on a city bus, but it is a bit different scope :P)

user20683
@MichaelT WHAM!

user55340
Color is time. Red starts, purple ends.

user55340
Hmm... ok, I forgot one in montana somewhere.

user55340
And maybe oregon I-5.

user55340
3:32 AM
The colors are a bit deceptive, because some places I went back to. Seattle for example. It should also have a dark red one.

user55340
And I hit Bandon twice..

user15026
That is very cool

user55340
~15,000 miles on my car for that trip. 3 oil changes (start, Troutdale (orange), and Salt Lake City (teal))... would have had another one, but... well... I had to get a new car.

user55340
Had 'fun' getting into Canada actually. The job: currently unemployed. residence: ultimately, Wisconsin... but none currently really doesn't make the customs officials happy.

user55340
(and having a significant supply of camping equipment in the car too...)

user55340
Had to go back to the US side (they were confused why I was entering the US without having been officially in Canada... that took some explaining too)

user55340
then got a print out of my bank statement from an atm to prove that I was able to spend time in Canada without needing to get a job (I had my severance package and had six figures in the account)... and pictures of the place I was going to (called up my parents while waiting in line on the US side for photos of their drivers license with names and address).

user55340
That did get me in though they stapled a document to my passport and said that I must give that document to the customs official when I leave Canada "otherwise future entry into Canada will be problematic." (those very words)

That's just..wow.

But yea... I enjoyed Canada. Stayed in Banff, went up to Athabasca falls, the Columbia glacier and then down to Waterton (stayed at the Prince of Wales - the recession made it so the rooms weren't booked)

Nice :) I've been to Montreal a couple of times, and Toronto because it is nearby, and NYC once, and to a couple random US locations for Mennonite Youth Conventions when I was younger, but that is it really

I wanted to get a T-shirt that read "Same Shirt, Different Day" that I had seen in Yellowstone. This was the only place to get stuff in the Tetons... so I went in there. Went up to the shops and saw the lobby... went back down and got a room, then got my t-shirt.

user15026
Man, I would just sit there forever just looking at stuff

user15026
@MichaelT not a bad way to go about things!

As I said, it was me and my camera... I could be as impulsive as I wanted.

I'd sometimes make reservations a day or two in advance when I knew I was going somewhere... but other than that... that way!

If you can, I'd suggest a "loop" of sorts. Trans-canada west, and then I-90 (or 80, or 70... depending on how far south you want to go) back.

Good to know :)

Or if you wanted a bit more rural, U.S. Route 2 would be one to take:

user55340
U.S. Route 2 (US 2) is an east–west U.S. Highway spanning across the northern continental United States. US 2 consists of two segments connected by various roadways in southern Canada. Unlike some routes, which are disconnected into segments because of encroaching Interstate Highways, the two portions of US 2 were designed to be separate in the original 1926 highway plan. The western segment of US 2 has its western terminus at State Route 529 (Maple Street) in Everett, Washington and its eastern terminus at Interstate 75 in St. Ignace, Michigan. The eastern segment ...

@MichaelT did you check "cliff" questions lately?

Hi! Can anybody helps me with server? I am new to server building and want to know so specific features of process.
My goal is to build a server, which will create a project template, download resources from external links that passed to server and create git-repo. After that it will test project and send e-mails to developers/designers if something goes wrong. And only everything is great enough, this server will tag project version as release and put release build in release folder where person can download it. (Actually, developer/designer/tester/pm and etc)
I am thinking about 'technology' such as service-oriented infrastructure. But I am not sure that this is appropriate technology in my situation.

Q: When defining a JS statement, what factors should be considered?

George JesterBackground It seems there are always alternative ways to structure a JS statement, either to improve it's performance or make it easier to read etc ... For instance, a novice JS programmer will write a conditional statement completely different than a senior JS programmer. In JS there are many d...

@MichaelT I don't know that a comment could adequately explain how wrong the question is. Better off / easier to invite them to a chat room and explain there.

Q: How has an increase in the complexity of systems affected successive generations of programmers?

Adam As a "new" programmer (I first wrote a line of code in 2009), I've noticed it's relatively easy to create a program that exhibits quite complex elements today with things like .NET framework for example. Creating a visual interface, or sorting a list can be done with very few commands now. When ...

@RobertHarvey Reddit
@RobertHarvey Bit confused about your flag, can't you protect at 15K+? Also, no crap answers (yet?), why protect at all?

@YannisRizos I didn't see the "protect" link on the question.
Yeah, still don't see it. Maybe it only shows up if a 1 rep user posts something that gets downvoted. Who knows what goes on in the mind of SE.

That's weird. I see the link on this (no deleted answers, no answers from brand new users). A bug perhaps?

Good Lord. Do that many people frequent redditt?
You'd think it was the Google home page.
@YannisRizos I'm going to repcap today on the answer I posted to that question.

user55340
@YannisRizos 15k can protect after 24 hours. Takes a mod to do a faster protect.

@RobertHarvey ... you really want to know the answer to that?

@RobertHarvey I've grown to like reddit more and more because it can be a single stop for a lot of different specific communities

user55340
reddit is also more... discussion thread based. Not that there's anything wrong with it - just don't try to get an answer there.

@MichaelT depends on the topic, honestly
I fairly frequently visit /r/personalfinance and a lot of people get answers/advice there
oh gosh someone kill me I just admitted I use reddit :(

Better reddit than twitter.
Way better.

user55340
I was just comparing the type of communication that has happened where something was cross posted between SE and reddit. It reminds me of when I was active in Photography forums on Deviant Art. They're conversations.

Each approach has its reasons and what its designed for (and not designed for). Trying to make them do something they weren't designed for can be painful.
