@MichaelT Best of luck man, I can't suspect a lot of headwinds in the interviewing process for you in the general, especially considering the market you're competing in; one thing I learned in Pittsburgh, smaller less highly-desirable markets have a much lower common denominator to overcome compared to your high desirability markets which I'm sure you've seen distinct from having competed in the silicon valley market

1:59 AM
Not that Denver's as desirable as that, but it's highly desired by and large for the same reason you like the idea of it; and especially compared to Pittsburgh it's a vast difference. Though I'm shopping around for a house now (finally!!) and for sure the cost bears that out; just looked at a 1400sq/ft joint that I'm going to try and make an offer on that was built ~'75 at a guess and not fancy or of a particular size, running 195k, I'm sure where you're living it'd likely be closer to 135

@JimmyHoffa There are really three big players in the programmer market here. The company I work at now (large retailer)... and then JAMF just moved into the area from Minneapolis, and is bringing with it the pay and culture (I can think of half a dozen people who have left to work there eaislly), Great Lakes (Madison / Eau Claire). Those are the two big ones... and they are both hiring.

user55340
Where I work has a very strict "no beer at lunch" policy that is carried over from its manufacturing and store side - not a bad thing there... but not a necessary thing in IT. JAMF I hear stocks their fridge with free beer.

user55340
I'm interviewing at a smaller company (in the 2 dozen to 2 score range). My age being one of the thigns - JAMF seems to like the just out of college types a bit more.. turning 40 this year I'm a bit older than them and it kind of hits the culture.

Yeah, my last job was full of that nonsense, new job has beer day after noon a bunch of beer gets brought in last friday of each month

user55340
Part of it too, and I do intend to use this as part of the interview... I've got 15 years professional java experience. No company in the city has been using Java for 15 years. You can't find someone with more experience unless they moved to this city from some other job.

user55340
Another fun bit, the discussion this morning was talking about "the party" - aka "everyone linking in on linked in" - three other of my co-workers (4 including myself) set up Linked in this weekend.

2:19 AM
haha

user55340
From the perspective of the developers, there is the clear impression that the company is bleeding developers profusely... and if they don't want IT development to disappear, the window of opportunity is single digit weeks if not days before large chunks of departments vanish in short order.

I've been mega leery of linked in for so long, but I should give up on that
I know it's the current favorite of recruiters and everyone

user55340
It is one of the invasive social networks (if you let it have access google contacts, oh, all these are contacts!) - but ghads, its the thing for recruiters and HR types.

user55340
Once I put myself on there, a bunch of old co-workers from where I worked before linked to me... or whatever the jargon is.

You say JAMF is a younger culture, perhaps you could aim for architect there then

user55340
2:23 AM
They don't appear to have a position open for that, unless I want to go managerial route.. and I really don't want a lobotomy.

yeah I made an account for something specific but I didn't fill out squat and randomly once or two old coworkers linked to me I guess (I haven't so much as logged in more less accepted anything so I don't know how that works)

user55340
Funny bit - one of the guys who I suspect will be applying there is a serious android fan... and they appear to be a mac shop.

@MichaelT never been a fan of lobotomy's; even with a free pair of tights?

user55340
<slurred>I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy</slurred>

What's the too-cold-to-go-outside season like up there? here it's ~mid october to ~beginning of april, just a month longer than I'd like, given the weather up north there though I'm guessing it's likely about the same if not longer?
likely a ton hotter up there when it's hot out though, the humidity 'n all that

user20683
3:23 AM
@JimmyHoffa Too cold to go outside is like maybe 2 days in January.

user20683
maybe

user20683
Too hot to go outside... that's another story

user20683
try most of July

user20683
and August

user20683
and maybe June too if you're really unlucky

user20683
3:24 AM
and sometimes September

I meant wisconsin

user20683
95 degrees and 75% humidity because it rained just long enough to turn everything into a steam bath

user20683
@JimmyHoffa I know :P

I know cali is murderous but I would likely quite enjoy that

user20683
sorry, I like bitching about georgia

3:25 AM
Oh you talking about atlanta

user20683
Cali is lovely

user20683
Atlanta is armpits

yeah, it's crazy to me how people in the south live, that's just nonsense
somebody needs to just install central air in the south

user20683
it's nice March - May and September - Dec

user20683
I spent a year in Chico, CA.

3:26 AM
I quite like Charlotte though, weather never seemed too bad

user20683
115 in the summer

and the culture was cool

user20683
Asheville is nice

user20683
even in the high summer

user20683
NC is less armpit

3:27 AM
heh aye

user20683
I'd rather live in Stockholm where it's like 65 in the summer and 30 in the winter

plus the whole citizens get proper social programs for the tax money they pay thing, that's nice..

user20683
@JimmyHoffa don't get me started

least you have a degree which c ould actually get you in one of thpse countries, i would be gone in a heartbeat in your shoes

user20683
@JimmyHoffa possible

user20683
3:37 AM
the hat trick would be to find and marry a Swede or somesuch.

user20683
that or get employed by Mojang

The hat trick would be to be a janitor in one of those countries, doing anything in them makes for a more pleasant life than here. I've got medical bills falling out of every crevice and they only continue to accrue, and today the colorado supreme court ruled that the immense difference between how schools are funded where many have 35+ student classrooms with broken HVAC isn't unconstitutional because so long as you are provided 3 months of schooling a year you are in compliance

user20683
yeah, real unified healthcare is probably my biggest political issue.

that's what my kid get's to look forward to! I've been fired while sitting in the hospital room waiting for my wife to recover because 2 weeks away taking care of her after a botched heart surgery is apparently unacceptable (even though I was working about half-time because I was working remote whenever I wasn't in the room monitoring her)

user20683
That's the part where I read the insurance policies of the company I'm taking the offer of in exhaustive detail.

3:49 AM
But yeah, this isn't politics.SE, that said; yeah eff all that other nonsense, get a job, any job, in a scandinavian country

user20683
If there is one thing I've learned in the 10 years out of high school, it's read yer contracts.

yeah, no joke... but when you're in an at-will state it doesn't matter, they can fire you anytime

user20683
aye

A: Why are so many user ages "89"?

TheTXIThis sounds like blatant ageism. How do you know a 90 year old man wouldn't be a useful member of the website!?

The comments there ^^^ are pure gold.

@gnat I agree the content is valuable but it has only had 609 views in the past 2 years. I can't in good conscious historical lock this with so little popularity.

Q: Any recommendations on a good Objected-Oriented book

TeaDrinkingGeekI'm looking to really grasp OO once and for all. Any recommendations on a good Objected-Oriented book? I program in .Net, so if it's .Net oriented all the better. Regards,

@maple_shaft understood, that makes good sense.

Would a moderator be able to get me the link to the post about including your SO profile on your resume?

Q: Would you put your stackoverflow profile link on your CV / Resume?

billy.bobIf applying for a new job, would you put your stackoverflow profile link on your resume? This would show the employer you're an active member of the development community and also provide an insight into your knowledge + how well you convey your ideas. However it would feel a bit gimmicky to me?

That one?

@ThomasOwens Yes, thank you. I thought it got deleted with the stci

For that question, I think it may be a candidate for historical lock. It's a little low on the view count (less than 5k views in 2 years), but it's relevant and has good answers. It's just not a good question.

@ThomasOwens It's a very good question, but it's not a "good" question according to Stack Exchange standards :) I mean, the users of your site build up reputation, and of course they'd be interested in finding out if this helps their career prospects or not.

Q: Copy range and store them on a different sheet

user2433379I think this is not a too difficult task to do, but the problem is that I actually don't know anything about programming and I need to do this on my current job. This is my issue: The problem is that I have to develop a Macro, and assign it to a button, that copies range E3:K14 from Page 1(sheet...

At least he doesn't beat around the bush..
> If someone could just put me the exact code (with some comments if possible) for me just to paste it would be really helpful.
heh yeah, while he's at it I think I'll post one too asking if anyone would just put me the exact code for the phone system I've been working on, that would be really helpful! Someone should just do my job for me too; I really like this idea!

@JimmyHoffa it's a cross-post (stackoverflow.com/questions/16819794/…), I flagged (as suggested in meta.stackoverflow.com/tags/cross-posting/info)
> If you spot a user cross-posting, please make use of Moderator Flags to inform the Moderators.

@gnat Great point! I'll make sure not to cross-post my Q when I ask people to do my entire job for me

psr

@psr +++ATTH0 says what?

@JimmyHoffa Writing your phone system for you.

6:30 PM
We don't have a MUMPS interpreter on hand...

Good evening

actually it's 12:30 and as soon as this build ends I'm going to grab lunch

psr
@JimmyHoffa Then your problems are unsolvable.

heh
@psr What is that gibberish, is that the old modem language jargon? All I ever remember from that was +++ gets you to a command and hN will hangup in N seconds
or rather the modems I remember having required +++ATT<commands>

There is someone that would be so kind to give me some clarifications about practical use of inheritance in C++?

6:40 PM
Having difficulties in an oo class?

@JimmyHoffa yeah that way ensures it woun't get a double portion of DVs. Though, their cross-post at SO got an answer and upvote oh well

@JimmyHoffa Not in a specific class.. there is an inheritance behavior that is not clear for me..

psr
@JimmyHoffa The gibberish is old-school MUMPS code to use a device, such as a port. Intentionally badly written but pretty idiomatic for a particular style. I've occasionally had to slog through stuff like it.

(Sorry, I'm having some problems with the connection..)

7:10 PM
@psr I don't know how you would ever remember a syntax like that, 2 days after being done, it would have escaped my brain completely because it makes absolutely no sense to begin with

@WorldEngineer thanks for pointing out that guys blog on languages, the comments lead me to this static.rust-lang.org/doc/tutorial.html which is a pretty neat language by appearances..
