:o that passive rep I'm getting.. love it
+30 and I haven't answered anything for a little while

I love it when I randomly notice I got rep for some answer like 2 years old

Yeah I get that on SO sometimes... the answer in question (haha pun) is only 3 weeks old

got an upvote just the other day from an answer in sep/2010, fun thing is it was a middling scored answer in the lot there were

that's good - means your answer was quality

On SO I have two questions from 2009 and 2010 that will just randomly generate reputation from time to time
it really makes me feel welcome when I haven't been there for a while
make that answers by the way (not questions)

12:36 AM
Yeah, I always wonder how someone stumbled upon those really old answers of mine when I see that

Google does wonders.
I can't even begin to tell you how many really old questions from SO I've stumbled upon while googling a question...

True enough, I kept bumping into SO so much after it's launch is the only reason I started playing the game
Thought I would give back since it helped me so much by going and answering a question or two after I had been getting solutions from it for like 2 years, but before I knew it, it pulled me in.
SO prayed on my good nature.. :(
preyed? I don't think there's prayer involved when a cheetah eats a hippo

I can make both of those answers show up in the top google results with two terms (technically three for one of them, as I added the language it was about)
So yeah, I think google is indeed the main benefactor here
The only problem is that when I look back at one of the two, I get the urge to edit it...

12:51 AM
Why's that a problem? Go fix it if it's wrong.

It's not so much wrong, it's more that it's not entirely accurate in one aspect

So why not edit it?
I've gone back and deleted all kinds of questions and answers I've posted from years back

and when I'm going to edit a +30 answer, I would better be a good one, and I just haven't taken the time to make it entirely accurate
*one = edit

Eh yeah I suppose you don't want people to see a reputable answer and you have incorrect information in it

Ah wait, it's the +17 one I was talking about, but the idea remains the same
Basically the question is "Can I do X server side or client side?"
My answer is "It can't be done server-side, but here's how to do it server-side
But actually, one could use the same technique to sort of do it server side (first: less reliably by detecting if the file from the client side was requested or not, second: more reliably by using ajax on the client side solution to turn it into a client side thing)
Which is a thing that I see now three years later but have to take the time some time to make it a decent edit
I suppose I should just do it, but I just haven't gotten around to it

aha
figured out
references the question with my answer... hence I get random +'s :D

Q: Issues with the intended behavior of a Service layer?

Rafael CichockiThis analysis makes sense, and states anything that avoids code duplication and simplifies maintenance speaks for a service layer. What is the technical behavior? When a service client references a service, does it do so at runtime, or does it happen at compile time? When I change something i...

fair enough :D
(that's an unfortunate choice for a username though, soa means std where I'm from...)

@Jasper That's a tag, not a username

Ah
Unfortunate choice for a name for a technique/tag then

lol
what language is that in Jasper?

1:41 AM
Dutch
Seksueel Overdraagbare Aandoening

lol
how interesting... I don't know Dutch, only English / Swedish

user20683
I know English, semi-passable Spanish and a bunch of mostly forgotten Swabish

1:59 AM
I love languages, they're fascinating to me
especially how different they are... Russian is the next language I want to learn

user20683
@Deco from a sheer utility standpoint learning Chinese would be best for me

user20683
that or Koine Greek

Mandarin could be fun
@YannisRizos - I don't know whether to downvote or upvote your hat..

@Deco Downvote ;P I'm a bit meh about the hats thing, but it could be fun.
@WorldEngineer We're looking for Koine Greek example questions for this proposal:

Greek Language & Usage

Proposed Q&A site for students, teachers, and linguists wanting to discuss the finer points of the Greek language.

Currently in definition.

The hats thing might help with the "Programmers is Uptight and Evul" thing

2:56 AM
@WorldEngineer I've still been meaning to make a post on meta to see if any mods anywhere want to do an experiment and change their pic to something with friendlier appearance and report back after a month if they notice any difference in how much they have to defend their actions, see if there's any ability to play on the psychology like marketers do when they make a restaurant X color because it makes people hungry

user20683
@JimmyHoffa we should have a Jon Purdy version and a Nice version and see how they compare

user55340
3:22 PM
@JimmyHoffa there was a bit on Eve Online with things such as the game masters having either female names or amusing ones disarming angry people and making the interactions easier.

3:38 PM
@MichaelT Any idea on the results of that? Did it make a difference? None? Make things worse?
One of the difficulties about it as Yannis pointed out to me when I mentioned the idea to him was it's very subjective what may be more friendly from one person to another, and that grows further complicated with SE being international where different cultures have massive variances on perceptions of the sort

user55340
4:26 PM
@JimmyHoffa The general feeling was that it did make things better. The one that noticed this most was "GM Homonoia" (a guy with a female avatar) after the name of the Greek concept of order and unity.

4:44 PM
Though the SE mods are still just volunteers and can't be given commands; They're as much here to express themselves as the rest of the community members so telling them to change their names or avatars is really antithetical to SE

5 hours later…
9:55 PM
@YannisRizos So there's support for changing the design; should I post a question to meta.progSE to get support for having us converted to the beta appearance as a first step to test the theory, or would MSO be even less inclined to a two phase change (to beta, then to a future design) than to a single one-chance-don't-blow-it approach?

10:13 PM
@JimmyHoffa Don't be hasty... We haven't received any feedback from SE yet.

Does SE mill around the metas?
I presumed the metas only ever had engagement from the given community
and you had to move things to MSO to engage SE proper
I have no idea how this stuff works :)

No, they check per site Metas regularly. And when they miss something that we need their feedback on... we (the mods) harass them endlessly.

Oh, spectacular

I'll ping them about your design question in a couple of days, I want to give everyone in the community the opportunity to chime in first.

10:52 PM
Course, guess I don't realize how many people are engaged in the meta

@JimmyHoffa Well, I've added the [featured] tag so the question is permanently pinned in the community bulletin...

Community bulletin?
Oh that thing on the right THAT'S WHERE YOU GOT COHHUNITY!
I was just assuming I didn't have the font to see that haha
Never noticed it

10
Q: What's this cohhunity bulletin?

Peter TurnerI thought it was some sort of joke I'd missed out on because I'd pursuing glory in other SE's, but no... It's just community bulletin... So, is anyone going to do anything about the fact that the font is almost illegible? As a programmer, I hate calling this a bug, but seriously Programmers Coh...

11:07 PM
Yeah I saw that, then looked around programmers and didn't know what the hell it was talking about
so I figured I didn't have the font that they had which was displaying funny
