hello all, I have this question which I am not sure is suited for programmers.SE
maybe someone here can help me decide if its appropriate for the site
so here it goes:
I am looking for jobs as a software developer / engineer.
I'm thinking about placing salary requirements (i.e. a range) in my cover letter.
While do I know that this will make me lose some negotiational liberty (since a company willing or able to pay above my range could limit their offer to the range's upper limit), I feel that if the range is properly defined (for what I expect) then I should be satisfied with that top value.
My purpose is to avoid waste of time with companies that will make offers bellow the market rates. Has anyone tried this strategy? Thanks for your comments.

@MyNameIsZero - There is a careers site that might help. But, if you want a programmer, you could always put a bottom but no top. It may not matter much, since they will use the bottom to guess how little they can pay you. I would suggest that you are probably paid more per hour enduring low-ball offers for the possibility of higher pay than you are for programming, but you could always run those numbers yourself based on your specific assumptions.
@MyNameIsZero - Of course, you could factor in that programming is more fun...

yeah programming is fun
I'm just trying to avoid getting called for interviews
to companies that will only pay 60% or 70% of my current salary
waste of time for everyone
:)
