Anyone know what the nationality demographic split is on this site?

Doesn't look like there's anything on that it the site analytics
Might be worth asking a meta question on that

Air
@Trevor you beat me to that typo by mere seconds

@Air That's why you're "Air" and not "Wind"
2

you mean as a feature proposal or something?
I was mostly just curious, it seems most users here are from the US

No, I just mean like a direct poll.
We've already got one on specialty

Air
12:14 AM
@TrevorArchibald I am an ill wind that blows hot air
2
@TrevorArchibald Yeah but that kind of meta post doesn't generally fly after private beta from what I've seen.
Just because it's meta doesn't mean it's the wild west for polls.

Mmk. I was kind of thinking that

Air
You'd have to ask for an analysis rather than everyone's individual answer. It could still be worth asking, but I'd check MSE first to see if anything like it has been asked broadly for the network, and if so, how it was answered

plus, that's like taking a volunteer census, useless data

SE can provide aggregated traffic data based upon geoIP location. Quantcast does similar

user41796
That'll give geography but not necessarily nationality

user41796
And I think I came up with a click bait worthy title, but still on-topic.

Q: Ah, strong am I with the Force, but how do I measure it?

GlenH7With all due apologies for paraphrasing Yoda, I am trying to measure a force. Fortunately, it's an easier force to measure than midi-chlorians. When I tutor others in karate, one of the things I emphasize is a focus on the technique behind the basic strikes. Experience has shown that the prope...

2:06 AM
@GlenH7 If you find a solution, post up your method on instructables or something, I'm interested in building one myself, but I'm a little busy with my robot bartender

1 hour later…
3:23 AM
@TrevorArchibald that was a quick catch on the typo!

@hazzey I've been quick on typos tonight

3:50 AM
will I lose my privelledges if my rep drops below the privilledge due to offering bounties? I want to offer 50 for this question: engineering.stackexchange.com/questions/227/…
but that will drop me to 43 rep and then I can't freely comment

Air
4:16 AM
Hooray! I have overtaken the lowest-rep moderator on the network!
And I am 1 rep ahead of one of the new coffee.SE mods
Movin' on up, folks
@SamWeston Yes, privileges are not permanently gained.
I offered a bounty on MSE a while back that caused me to lose privileges.
And there are a few users on the network who offer bounties so freely that their rep is constantly quite low.
The only bounty-happy user that immediately comes to mind is nicael on SO

user41796
Yep. I tried not to be too click-baity with the title... :-)

user41796
Jus saw your answer - I like where that's headed

user41796
As an aside, you don't need to leave "Let me think ..." comments within the answer. They're okay as a comment to your own post; just clean them up when you come back.

user41796
And to help make your answer stronger, I don't mind running power to the unit, so it doesn't have to be self-supporting

I think I can cook up better solutions than the one I posted. might be during the weekend. :-)

user41796
12:40 PM
I'm patient. :-)

user41796
If we're lucky, that question will hit the hot questions page for the network. That translates into more eyeballs and hopefully more votes for the existing answers.

user41796
And you've got me curious with the fitbit reference. Do those have a programming API available to them? That would be an interesting approach if so. Overall, that's a good start to what can turn into a really good answer since you're covering two (three?) different approaches.

I was thinking of mounting device on the individual, because there is better data available like to angle, height etc
later

user41796
Thanks! And yes, I had thought about that as well but was looking for "simple" first

user41796
@SamWeston If you're not at a point to where you can offer up a bounty, another trick on the non-trinity sites (SO, SU, SF) is to put a substantial edit in place. The edit improves the question and bumps it back to the front page so more eyes will be able to see it.

Site design - Webapps has an awesome 404 page. See webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/34/… for an example if you're not a 10k+ user there. Something for us to consider as well when we're coming up with site design ideas.

This room was placed in timeout for 1 minute; the topic of this room is "General discussion for engineering.stackexchange.com"; - conversation should be limited to that topic.

user41796
Testing the timeout feature.

Our first question from a Jedi Master! "Ah, strong am I with the Force, but how do I measure it?" - http://engineering.stackexchange.com/q/1742
Those of our users who are also Twitter users should consider following and retweeting @StackEngineers as an easy way to help promote the site.
I'll expand on this in a helpful featured Meta post later today.
Excitement! Suspense! Android KitKat screenshots!
You won't want to miss this summer's blockbuster Meta event!

user41796
it's progress! :-)

user41796
I don't know if the mod tools can tell us how "sticky" those questions are - ie. how much they get people to look at the rest of the site too

Air
I was just looking at the overall analytics. Most of our traffic is still originating from the network.
Time will help search engines catch up but off-network evangelism is going to be important.

user41796
Yep

user41796
We need more clickbait worthy titles for good questions. :-)

Air
8:59 PM
Don't get too carried away, there.

user41796
emphasize the good questions part

Air
Good titles are just as important.
This question is fun but the title's honestly not very good.
2

user41796
There's an art to the clickbait title. It still needs to be relevant to the question, somewhat constructive, but also teasing enough to make something click through.

Air
And clickbait doesn't give everyone warm fuzzy feelings; driving views is all well and good, but what we really want is to drive participation
Obviously it would be ridiculous to have an engineering site with "You Won't Believe" and "They Hate This"

@Air Lollipop Master Race

Air
9:03 PM
@TrevorArchibald "coming soon"

user41796
@Air I prefer "One weird trick..."

@Air Moto X 2014 ftw
Pure Edition
Bought it on Black Friday weekend, it upgraded to Lollipop the day I got it :D

user41796
@TrevorArchibald Has motorola been keeping pace with the official android updates? One thing I dislike about some of the other android device vendors is the long lag between updates provided by google and them rolling it out on their devices

Air
@Trevor I'm sure it's lovely, but the Moto G 2013 has better battery life and I got it free and clear for $39 :)

@GlenH7 Sort of

Air
9:06 PM
I'm also perfectly happy having a smaller phone.

@Air Might have better battery life, but I've yet to kill my phone in one day

Air
TBH this is my first smart phone... had it for a couple months

But I'm not a heavy user either

user41796
Ok. I'll stick with the nexus line then

Also, that bamboo backing
@GlenH7 The 2014 Moto X was fantastically fast. The 2013 Moto X has been waiting a while (chipset issues they claim.)

Current phone contract comes up in a5 months or so. I need to re-evaluate where I want to get my next phone from. Happy with my current carrier but I may have reason to bundle and go with another one instead.

@GlenH7 Also, I would look at getting off a contract, most carriers should have comparable no-contract plans that give you a lot more freedom.

user41796
Yeah, I really dislike the forced data plan that I'm on as a result of the contract

Well the no contract plans don't change the nature of data plans
They just make it so that you're not paying the phone subsidy after your phone is paid off
You pay as much as the phone costs, no more

user41796
9:24 PM
I still haven't convinced myself that I need the Seek thermal camera yet. Just that I want it

Air
@GlenH7 Contracts are for chumps, go Ting or go home
Although, the limitation of Ting is that it's probably not the best for single individuals who use a lot of data.

user41796
Part of it is concern about coverage with the different carriers

Air
Ting is multi-carrier now

user41796
VZW provides the best coverage in my neck of the woods, but I don't think they affordably support non-contract phones

Yeah they were the most expensive of the big 4 when I was looking

Air
9:34 PM
Ting started on Sprint's network and they are about to add a GSM network, unnamed but deduced on reddit to be T-Mobile
Also, they roam talk and text to Verizon for free
But unfortunately, no roaming data.
for the time being, anyway.

Oh god, that sounds awful, Sprint is TERRIBLE

Air
Sprint is not as bad as it used to be.
I've had no problems.

I guess it depends on location
My parents seem to have no problem in Ohio
Since I've been in Illinois, my data's been terrible

Air
Yeah, I get zero coverage at my in-laws. But that's where I roam to Verizon, and all I lose is wireless data, which is no big deal as long as I have wifi.
I would have preferred to stay on Verizon's network since it's the only one that offers coverage there, but couldn't pass up the $39 opportunity.

user41796
I get annoyed at having to jump around like that

user41796
9:37 PM
And yes, I'm willing to pay a bit more to not be annoyed. :-)

Air
what is "a bit" more?

user41796
That I'm not sure about... :-)

Air
My wife and I paid about $35 total last month.
Of course, we stick mostly to wifi for data. Let me check on the buckets...

user41796
Quite a bit cheaper than my monthly rate, but I'm still paying the phone off that way too

Air
OK, so that's with up to 500 MB usage
If we go over into the 1GB bucket, it's an extra $7
Etc., etc.

user41796
9:40 PM
Not bad at all

Air
Their rate structure gets bad at the high end of usage
Well, it looks worse, anyway. I don't have much to compare it to.
Also, they added a fake robot customer service line when someone complained on reddit that their service was too good
But enough free advertising for my corporate masters. It's well past time for lunch.

@HDE226868 Could I talk you into putting some creative thought into editing this question so it would be suitable for migration? Space mods have said they'd like to see some sort of operational scale behind the question. Even though the OP didn't provide many details, anything to help tighten it up at this point would likely salvage the question.

10:15 PM
@GlenH7 I'm still not sure what that questioner is actually looking for. "What issues might come up if there is no support system?" That answer to that is "Every issue". And I can't figure out why it matters what is being produced.

@hazzey According to a special I saw 5 minutes of on what would happen if all people suddenly vanished, lightning and wind damage would destroy every major structure within 5 years
I stopped watching at that point though

What happened to the rocket engine question? Did it get migrated?

@hazzey Looks like it was deleted because it was a cross post from another site
The OP had put it in spaceexploration.SE first

@TrevorArchibald Thanks. I'm not yet cool (rep) enough to get a useful error message.
