Q: Bonding Semiconductors to PCB

George HeroldI'm trying to bond semiconductor samples (Si and Ge) area ~1-2cm^2 to fiberglass printed circuit board (PCB) We use West system marine epoxy for other things. 105 resin 209 hardener (long cure time.) So that's what I used. (mixed at standard ratio) I wanted a controlled thickness for electrical ...

GlenH7 has made a change to the feeds posted into this room
GlenH7 has stopped a feed from being posted into this room

user41796
HDE & @MahendraGunawardena - I changed the main site feed back to a ticker - so you have to be in the room to see it. I left the meta site feed as an "in place" chat message.
FWIW, I prefer to see both as tickers and had only moved them to feeds over concerns about their not appearing in the chat room.

2:37 PM
@GlenH7 Okay, cool.

hi @HDE226868

2:56 PM
@SabreTooth, Hey, good to see you! I see you committed to this proposal.

yeah, I joined briefly, even posted a question, but got a mockery of an answer, and decided, after some reflection - that my kind of questions would be useless here

Oh, come on. It's just one question.

my time is very limited in the week usually
it certainly won't harm the site, so it does not really matter

True. I've had a bunch of midterms this week, so I've been busy.
But they were actually pretty easy.

I am back at work, and are stepping up my research
ironically, I figured out the answer to my question as well

3:02 PM
That happens to me sometimes.
You're glad to be back at work?

@HDE226868 not a chance
@HDE226868 the 3 answers to the question are useless to me
one is a joke

I can't argue with that. I think.

this question engineering.stackexchange.com/questions/49/… was the one I posted

I remember seeing that, and your one on Physics.

the first answer acknowledges that I am not after their solution at all, but still proceeds with it, the 2nd is close, but not quite, the 3rd is an outright mockery - the answer on Physics is useless to me as well.
However, I have figured it out and will be test it in the next couple of weeks.

3:05 PM
At least you figured out the answer on your own.
That's always satisfying.

indeed, some on physics are suggesting I post it as an answer... no chance of that

Why?

it is going to be used as part of a published paper

That makes sense.
Good luck on it.
I hope you post something when the paper gets published.

we'll see, at this stage it is unlikely

3:08 PM
Ah, well.

the mocking non-answers on both physics and here have turned me off doing so
in any case, I am going to ust focus on the 9 memberships I have (even posted on SO!) and possibly a 10th

SO? Wow.
Earth Science is going well, I see.

I am limiting myself to 10 sites - to save myself from going even more insame
@HDE226868 it is, I am now the top poster by 600+ there now
most of the topics are out of my expertise, but I can research anything

I'm second in reputation in . . . 3 separate sites. Well, 2, now that I've been overtaken by bowlturner in Worldbuilding, as has been happening for a month or so. But I've been doing a lot of moderation stuff. Editing, reviewing, etc.

I am doing that alot as well

3:12 PM
It feels nice to be helping the sites like that.

I was looking forward to this site, but ah well - am searching A51 for my 10th haunt

Scientific Imagination got my attention a while back. I'm waiting for it to get to commitment.
It seems a bit like Worldbuilding, which is odd.

thought about that one
but naah

I've found I have trouble asking good questions, but I can post good answers. I enjoy researching to answer questions.
Same pattern seems to be happening here on Engineering.
Anyway, I have to go. Hope it's sunny where you are! We got 5+ inches of snow where I live.

lol, sub tropical weather mayhem here
catch ya round

3:17 PM
See you.

user41796
@SabreTooth - This is one way to address non-answers

user41796
This isn't necessarily the most constructive answer I've read.... If the OP hasn't made their question or requirements clear, it's better to ask a comment seeking that clarification. I'm struggling to see how this gets the OP closer to answering their question. — GlenH7 1 min ago

user41796
FWIW, I think your question suffered a bit because you didn't provide enough detail.

eh, moot point - I have solved it (surprisingly simple as it turned out)

user41796
And I would have considered posting an answer but the possibilities were a bit broad. It wasn't clear if you needed a mechanical or electrical solution, for example.

user41796
3:19 PM
@SabreTooth Saw that in the transcript.

user41796
Was hoping to encourage you to re-activate your account and trying again.

user41796
There is definitely an art to writing good questions

i am aware - look at my earth sciences profile

user41796
But the community should also rally around and remove non-answers like the 3rd one that was provided. To be fair, I think they were trying to be lighthearted and it didn't come across well.

after the mocking i got at physics.se, it kind of very much turned me off

user41796
3:23 PM
@SabreTooth This is my 2nd site that I'll be active on, and 4th or 5th that I've provided contributions to. I'm more of an engineering mindset than a physicist, so I haven't participated in physics.

user41796
The snarky engineer in me would point out that many things have been found / invented by engineers that were missed or mocked by physicists because they were busy looking at something else.

I am in between
an applied physicist

user41796
And based upon your research profile, I could imagine a couple of approaches to narrowing the scope of the sunspotter question without necessarily giving up your rights to publication

user41796
@jhabbott did my comment make sense?

anyway, I gotta go - it is 1:25am tomorrow and way past my bedtime.... best wishes for the site

user41796
3:27 PM
@SabreTooth Have a good one

user41796
@jhabbott - so once you've caught up on the chat transcript (worth reading), I'd be happy to explain my comment. I think you were trying to be light-hearted which is always a plus in answers. But I don't think it was going to lead sabre tooth to an answer which isn't good.

4:07 PM
@GlenH7 Thanks for pointing out that meta post; you were right in voting to close.

user41796
NP. And yes, other SE sites will tolerate off-site resource requests but there is a de facto ban across all of SE as far as I know.

user41796
The ones that can support them tend to be the smaller & beta sites with strong communities that can shut the bad ones down quickly. And also deal with the associated whinging of "but why was this one allowed?"

Right; the ones I've seen have been on beta sites. I may be misremembering about Physics.

user41796
@HDE226868 They could have been deleted since you last saw them.

@GlenH7 True. I haven't seen any recently, that's for sure.

user41796
4:11 PM
10k+ on regular sites and I think 1k+ on beta sites can see deleted questions, but you can't search for them. You have to have a direct link.

user41796
mods on the site can search for them

I certainly can't see deleted answers on one site where I've got about 1.5k, though I can see deleted answers on sites where I've got a lot more.
I haven't seen a lot of deleted questions on any of those sites, though.

user41796
Most sites aren't that aggressive about deleting off low quality content and leave it up to the Community user to take care of things.

user41796
Programmers is an exception to that rule. IIRC, it's the most aggressive community in purging off low quality content.

I haven't been active on any of the high-activity sites, so I wouldn't know too much about that.

A: Enable automatic deletion of old, unanswered zero-score questions after a year?

Jeff AtwoodJust to formally document the exact policies we have in place to remove old abandoned / dead questions, the Community user will delete questions in the following circumstances: If the question is more than 30 days old, and ... has −1 or lower score has no answers is not locked ...or... it ...

user41796
Those are the rules for when Community will delete something off.

I think I recognize that one.

user41796
There's a really good M.SE post by Shog, I think, showing delete vote rates by community, mods, and 10k users.

user41796
Except I can't find it.... :-(

Dare I ask it. . . How do you think we're doing?

user41796
4:28 PM
We're okay. We've got a good ratio of answers to questions, I think.

user41796
And it was inevitable that we'd lose some users, but that's good in a way as it gives the community a catalyst to help shape itself.

We seem to have a good question rate without having lots of crappy questions.

user41796
Agreed; We've had some broad ones, but most seem agreeable to scoping things down

I have a feeling we'll get some broader ones when we hit public beta.

user41796
no doubt

user41796
4:31 PM
And we're starting to get reviewers, so that's good. Most meta questions are getting answers too. And we're getting meta questions, which is positive

user41796
Not bad for a first week

Not bad at all. I saw 3 meta questions asked in the span of 5 minutes, which was interesting.

user41796
And we're actually picking up a conversation thread in here too... Not bad at all. :-)

Ha! I've seen too many chat rooms go dark.

user41796
2 days ago, by GlenH7
@HDE226868 Honestly, chat is kind of like a bar or a pub. Predicting how one takes off and does well is kind of a black-art.

user41796
4:34 PM
And you're perfectly fine in saying you may not have the experience to fully understand the analogy. :-)

Yeah, yeah, I'm 16.
Drinking doesn't interest me at all.
I even hated soda the first time I had it. :-)

Sorry to interrupt the conversation. I am finding it difficult to create good questions. Most on question that I have posted, I together with rest of the team work have solved for our application. It is hard to post a question in public domain, suppressing proprietary infomation.
I thought the following would have been a great question. engineering.stackexchange.com/questions/171/…, but realized making the question generic I might have confuse the audience.

@MahendraGunawardena That's a tough one. I'm not familiar with the relevant field, so I can't give you any good input there.

user41796
@MahendraGunawardena I've noticed that trend with your questions too. The trick is to carefully think through what is applicable to anyone in your field so you're not giving away proprietary information. Another thing I'll see on Programmers is a copy / paste of code for example purposes but then sanitizing the code by changing to generic variable names (foo, bar, bas) and removing any identifying framework elements.

user41796
The trick is to present a solvable problem, which sometimes means narrowing things down.

user41796
4:38 PM
Just because I can't solve the general problem applicable to everyone doesn't mean I can't provide value by answering a narrow slice of the problem.

user41796
@HDE226868 Honestly, there's no rush to go down that route either. Just extra calories you have to burn off.

@GlenH7 I dunno; I'm a runner for three quarters of the year.
But you're right; it's unnecessary empty calories.

user41796
@HDE226868 Friend of mine from high school days was in the same condition. He stopped running when he got into college and introduced himself to beer. The natural consequences played themselves out. He is not in running shape now

user41796
So if / when you choose to drink, don't give up running!

@GlenH7 I'm trying to get to the point where I can run really long distance races, so I've got a goal to work towards for years to come. And my 5k times are good enough that in some colleges I could make the varsity team if/when I go there.
I love to run, as do my friends. I'll never give it up.
Or drink, most likely.

user41796
4:42 PM
@HDE226868 One of my neighbors / friends gave up drinking and is now into extreme long distance runs

@GlenH7 I love running long distances because they give me time to think.

user41796
He loves it. But I think he's crazy for knocking out 50 - 100 miles in a race

Chatting with friends on the run is good.
Although when you start going fast, you tend to run out of breath.
And over 8 miles, the pack starts to break apart.

user41796
@MahendraGunawardena - Using this question as an example. Could you narrow it by taking a specific chunk of those specifications and trying to focus your question on that?

user41796
Narrowing a question that way doesn't prohibit someone from answering the broader question if they want to

4:43 PM
50-100 miles? I'd love to be able to run that.

user41796
@HDE226868 When I'm training for karate, that's what I do during my katas.

user41796
@HDE226868 Seriously, he went from 40 - 50 lbs overweight to crazy lean now. And he logs some insane miles.

user41796
He's got this ultra-efficient lope type motion that minimizes the energy he puts into each step.

I really like if area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/70800/… and engineering.stackexchange.com because I have not been successful in find good answer from both SO and EE.
I will chat with you guys later

@GlenH7 That's amazing. Another thing is that our school is right by a forested reservation, so it's always peaceful. And we're on top of the highest point in the county, meaning that we always have to run monster hills.
Hill repeats are, for us, fun.
Well, maybe just for me.
@MahendraGunawardena Yeah, Area51 has broadened my network usage.

user41796
4:46 PM
@HDE226868 I never liked them, but I never had anything as picturesque to distract me.

@GlenH7 We're lucky. Really, really, lucky.
Hey, we've had 4 questions within an hour or so.
Weekend traffic on SE might slow, but not here!

user41796
@HDE226868 It almost completely dies off on the weekends for Programmers. You can map pretty well when the world is waking up based upon activity levels and types of questions there.

@GlenH7 Worldbuilding slows down a bit, though Physics seems to be okay.

user41796
Someone started a question over on the Whiteboard but then deleted. Not sure if I should surprise them by answering since they probably don't know room owners can see deleted chat messages....

I was a tad worried about my cloud chamber question because it's borderline hobbyist. Some fellow students and I are planning to propose it as a project to a couple of the teachers. But it will be an actual research project, so I think it should be an okay question.

user41796
4:51 PM
I liked it and was curious to know the answer. It ought to be fine.

user41796
And that said, the rest of the day calls me. Have a good weekend.

You too. Enjoy yourself.

5:20 PM
What's wrong with hobbyist questions? That seems perfectly fine to me, engineering is not only used for commercial applications.
In fact many of the best engineers use their skills for fun hobbies and the job is just a necessary evil
@GlenH7 re. the sunspotter answer - yeah I saw your comment. Vote it down if you think it's bad, or I can delete it if you think it actually detracts from the site. However, the reason I wrote that is that the question wasn't all that specific/clear in what answer was wanted and it had no answers so far when I wrote it...
Although it might not answer the OP question all that well, I often find useful answers to my questions on SE sites when searching the web, the answer that works for me is often not the accepted answer as the OP's question might be slightly different to mine. I think question titles are often an issue when finding questions through search results, you think you've found your exact question, but it's not.
so the question is.. does it make the site more useful or not? If not I'll gladly delete it. Or if it's a bad answer I don't mind being voted down, that's a valuable part of a list of answers sometimes.

3 hours later…
user41796
8:26 PM
@jhabbott I think it's distracting from the site, especially since we're at our beginning steps. Later on, I'd probably just shrug my shoulders and ignore it. The other concern is the strong reaction from the OP with respect to the answer. Granted, that response was biased by another site that's completely outside of our control.
