Mark Suresh Joshi (2 March 1969 – 8 October 2017) was a researcher and consultant in mathematical finance, and a professor at the University of Melbourne. His research focused on derivatives pricing and interest rate derivatives in particular. He is the author of numerous research articles and seven books; his popular guides, "On becoming a quant" and "How to Get a Quant Job in Finance", are widely read.He was an assistant lecturer in the department of pure mathematics and mathematical statistics at Cambridge University and a fellow of Darwin College from 1994 to 1999. Following this, he worked...
Hi. Mods. Could you add that dateline in the profile of Mark Joshi? He passed away in 2017.

@User1865345 We typically don't add death notices to profiles unless that profile is that of a person who has made a large impact on Math SE. My impression is that this particular user didn't have much of an impact on the site. While he has other significant contributions to the world (for example, I have a well-worn copy of his book on distributions on the shelf behind me), I do not think that his account on Math SE is notable enough to merit moderator intervention.

Unfortunately, there simply isn't enough person-power to manually edit the profile of every user who dies, so we are forced to draw some arbitrary and nebulous lines.

@Peter Flagged what?

@XanderHenderson I was suggesting Peter make comments about downvotes he receive, and declined flags he cast, here, rather than in CURED. But the vagueness of the comment is confusing. I'm sorry if sending it here was not a good call on my part. If so, please let me know that.

@amWhy Sending it here is fine. I just need clarification from @Peter about the complaint.

@XanderHenderson I agree. Thanks!

@XanderHenderson Okay got that. Thanks for clearly explaining this out.

I noticed the impact or contribution was more in Quant Fin SE. If they deem the same, the folks there might add.

@Peter: I had handled 4 comment flags on that question related to Goldbach conjecture and one of the flags was from your end. The comments were mostly about mathematical argument and in my opinion your comments were mathematically correct. None of those comments looked rude or out of line. So I declined all four "unfriendly or unkind" flags.

@ParamanandSingh To add to this: "unfriendly / unkind" flags, if accepted, penalize the user against whom they are raised. For borderline comments, you are better off flagging things as "no longer necessary"---comments deleted after a NLN flag do not penalize the commenter.
Also note that it is impossible for a moderator to leave a comment on the site without declining a comment flag. We can decline a flag and then delete the comment, but we cannot mark the flag helpful without deleting the flagged comment.
So it is possible that a moderator might agree with you that a comment is marginal, and feel that you were correct to flag to comment, but still not feel that the comment should be deleted. In such a case, we are forced to decline the flag.
Comment flags are a bit of a pain.
