I wish we could get someone banned for over-starring. Seriously, stop it.

We can't see who starred things in our own chat rooms either

@Secret We can bring up the issue with the SE team, and then after that it's kind of case-dependent what if anything gets done about it. But by convention we usually leave that sort of detailed investigation to the mods of the site that "owns" the chat room.

I guess for now, we can try to bug the math mods to contact the SE team, and get them to look into the issue, cause recently that overstarring is escalating and many users found it disruptive

@Secret Indeed. That seems to be the best course of action. I'll get in touch with a math mod and ask them to look into it.
This overstarring issue, which has been plaguing the math chat room for at least 3 years, has escalated recently and now a majority of users are being disrupted by it. We hope the math mods can contact the SE dev team to look into the issue and find out who's behind that star spam. Thanks

@Secret I don't really pay attention to stars, and I haven't noticed. What do you find disruptive?
SE allows users to star up to 20 messages a day, and other than that it's a wild west of stars. It's sort of similar to votes in that way.
^20 messages per day in each room

Well, it's not just me, (you can ask ted, balarka and others) but we have been having this problem of consecutvie stars appearing in messages that seemed to be ordinary discussions. Because those wave of stars keep popping up, we are wondering whether it's one users who does that (because the stars on each message in the wave appear like one message every second)

@Secret is that bad?

They come in waves in a bunch of ordinary messages, which does not look like something that a normal starring activity should be
This is just the two most recent examples, if you look further back in the transcript, there are these instance where you see cluster of consecutive singly starred messages

@Secret How should normal starring activity look?

Normal starring, should look something like this, I think:

@Secret If this is something that bothers you and other users (which it definitely seems to be), then I think it would be good if you made a post on either our meta or meta.stackexchange detailing exactly what's up, some examples of bad stuff, and what you suggest might be done. Then I'll happily make sure that the SE Team is aware of these concerns and direct them to it

It should not appear like every other message for a consecutive 20 messages in a row
Ok then we will make a meta about it. Btw, I suppose if DavidZ is right, the math mods you guys cannot really see who star what?

@Secret Yes, that's right.

right, we are going to raise this to meta then

We have managed to get in contact with an acquaintance of the star spammer and that they has assured us that the person will NOT AT ALL star spam again. Therefore we don't need to escalate this to the SE mods for now. But we also discussed that if it happens again, then we will instantly escalate the report to the SE dev.
mixedmaths, that's the current update, so consider this resolved for now until it happens again
