2:20 AM
That "websocketry stuff" is disgusting!!!
:P

3:20 AM
Hi @WillJagy

5 hours later…
8:02 AM
Morning all. I was wondering why this answer of mine was deleted.

8:33 AM
@Glorfindel: A fair question. Since I am the moderator who did it, let me explain. It turned out that the question is from an on-going competition. We have a policy of hiding those to keep competitions like that as fair as possible, hence the deletion. But, that competition has a deadline of January 20th. So I will undelete the question on 21st. At that time you will also regain the reputation you already earned.

OK, that makes sense. I knew of the ban on on-going competition questions, but I couldn't find this particular question on Google. And because I wasn't the asker of the question, I can only see 'this question was deleted for reasons of moderation' which is a bit vague :)
Thanks for the explanation!

8:55 AM
Plus the possible extras that you may earn, when your answer goes back to the front page. Anyway, the blame for the deletion to me, the rest to the asker, none to you.

I hadn't thought of the extra exposure :)

If I don't remember to undelete it on 21st, do @-ping me!

8 hours later…
4:37 PM
@AsafKaragila At least those are honest questions and not you-know-who.

4:59 PM
Hey, @DanielFischer : I had tried to approve access for YouKnowMe to two chat-rooms I $\strike{own}$ lease, due to his low rep (1), while suspended. But I'm guessing, whether I grant access to him or not, a suspended MSE user is banned from the site's chat-room, too?

@amWhy That depends on what their parent site is for the chat user. If one is suspended on the parent site, one is automatically suspended in chat.

That makes sense. No big deal, and it's probably for his good, lest he waste time in chat. I do know that, despite his claims about time-shortage, and needing to priorities his studies, He has indicated that, the fact of the matter is that a long-time user here on this has agreed to mentor/teach him in number theory, and hopes to spend time he spent here, on that opportunity.

@amWhy Their chat parent is of course Mathematics. Have you an indication that they want to be able to chat? If they want to concentrate more on their studies, chatting is maybe not the most efficient way for that.

That's what I'm thinking; regardless of whether he neglected other subjects in his studies, or wants to focus on studying number theory, the chat rooms can siphon away the time he feels he needs.
@DanielFischer Is this statement in the MSE user who has chosen to teach/work with YouKnowMe okay to post in one's profile?: "If someone feels like they are strongly willing to learn advanced mathematics, I am willing to privately support a student below the graduate level to teach him advanced mathematical theories of his choice. Contact me for more information."
I guess, I see no problems, and I suspect the user who includes this in his profile will learn from taking on YouKnow, to qualify the statement, or withdraw it. Unfortunately, his offer may lead other users like YouKnow to expect such an accommodation by other users here.

5:17 PM
We're pretty permissive with profiles, so I think it's okay.

@DanielFischer Like I said, most likely, it's all good. Where I would object is if it involves any sort of monetary exchange for services, which I know nothing of, in this case.

Yes, if money were mentioned in that, I would ask higher up whether that would still be okay. Without mention of money, it's just a bit eerie.

5:43 PM
Hello, @quid. Taking a break from playing chess? :-)

5:55 PM
@DanielFischer True dat.

@amWhy yes, sometimes I need to get some work done... :-)

@quid Absolutely..."All play and no work makes" quid...
But then again, as we learn from "The Shining" ... "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy....". So if you have to error on one side or the other when trying to be balanced....error on the side of play!

6:20 PM
Hi @Jyrki, how's the weather in Finland?

Hi @Asaf. Pretty much what you would expect in January. Here in the South temperature has been seesawing between +1 and -15. Dunno about the Northern parts.

@JyrkiLahtonen I'll be there in two weeks.

Oh yeah! The trip to the arctic!

Any particular tips other than "don't run after your booze when they throw it outside at the evening", of course. I know they will probably lock the door behind me.

:-)
Don't leave your case of beer outside. If it freezes up that will crack the bottles.

6:28 PM
@JyrkiLahtonen Well, sure. I live in the desert. I do have experience with forgetting a bottle of beer in the freezer a tad too long. I believe that Lapland is colder than my freezer, especially overnight.

Checking the weather forecasts. In the North they expect -16 by the weekend. That is short sleeves temperature by their standards.

@JyrkiLahtonen Well, we've had some 5 degrees weather here, and I still walk in sandals.
So I guess I'll be fine.

Yeah. The Southern half of the country is expecting some more snow. Which usually means temperatures around zero. Clear skies => cold weather. Cloudy => mild.

@JyrkiLahtonen Does -15 count as cold in this aspect? I mean, do I hope for colder or for warmer when I arrive?
(I mean, I came all the way to Lapland, for chrissakes, at least let me see some dancing lights in the evernight skies!)

Where I live -15 is cold. Kilpisjärvi in January => -40 is not unusual. I don't know how frequent Aurora Borealis are. Sorry.
Oops. Missus yelled for the third time. My turn to do the dishes :-(

6:36 PM
Enjoy!
Thanks for the tips.

7:09 PM
@JyrkiLahtonen Why wasn't the question locked and the answer deleted, as per the Contest Problem Policy (meta.math.stackexchange.com/questions/16774/…)? I don't have a problem with it remaining deleted for now, but it is easier to remember unlocking than to remember undeleting because one can search locked:1.

7:39 PM
@JyrkiLahtonen Are you'all talking about Celsius? If you're taking 0 degrees Celsius as cold.... that ain't nothing. When you're talking about -15 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, then you have my sympathy/

8:11 PM
@amWhy: It was Celsius. But I said that -15 is cold. 0 is "balmy". Inland -15 is pretty ok. I live close to the Baltic Sea, and the windchill can be unpleasant due to the extra humidity.
IIRC you are from Midwest, where Cold&Windy => Blizzard. I lived 4 years close to the receiving end of lake effect snow over Lake Michigan. Here it is somewhat opposite. For it to get really cold (below -20 or so) we need incoming air from the Arctic or Russia => clear skies and no snow.

3 hours later…
11:20 PM
@JyrkiLahtonen I agree, -15 Celsius is like 5 Fahrenheit...which can be very cold, especially with 40 mph wind!

Hm, I am sorry guys, should I not be here? I never used the chat and the "Mod's Office" part caught my attention... is this chat used for just - you know - chatting? Or is there any other purpose to it?

@RSerrao Well, it's a place where you can interact with a mod or two, when they're around...but it also has a light side...Don't apologize ! :-)
So, no reason why you should not be here.

@amWhy oh ok, thanks. Now I don't have the time but later I'll come back to ask a couple of questions ok?
Not necessarily to you, but to whom might be able to answer them

11:35 PM
Sure, @RSerrao!
