Mailchimp is a tool used by programmers, it's definitely on topic to ask about specific syntax it might have. — Félix Adriyel Gagnon-Grenier 35 secs ago

Our software project are very large and many programmers are making improvements and modifications on a daily basis. The software is written for old C compiler. Now, we try to change to clang to support new processors. Then a number of warnings were output. The code should be modified to suppress warnings, but it is so large that I gave up on the modification. So we are trying to compare the build logs to make sure they are the same as after the modification. Therefore, it is difficult for people to determine if the order is different. — jsuzu 34 secs ago

@SorinCiolofan No, the SQL engine does not assume anything; it sees that you expect 4 values but have only provided 3 values and tells you you have made a mistake by not providing enough values. If it assumed that the missing value should be the
DEFAULT
for a column (which is usually NULL
) then it will never know whether the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th value is missing and where it should insert the DEFAULT
. Assumptions are dangerous and cause programmers mistakes to lead to invalid data; throwing an error and failing fast is safe - you can then see the error and fix it. — MT0 32 secs ago@JuroOravec this syntax can be quite catchy - especially for programmers. In case of command execution
RC/$? == 0
is understood as OK (or "truthy") value while any other returned value is understood as an error code - it indicates that command had failed. You can look at &&
as operator to chain successfully executed commands, and ||
as a way to handle situations where command failed - as in the example. — Radioactive Pickle 22 secs ago2:27 PM
Welcome to SO, amanton. SO is a place where programmers help programmers make source code work. How SO works and how to use it is described at stackoverflow.com/help. Please edit the question and include the source code MRE (Minimal, Reproducible Example), include any error messages, describe what happens, and describe what should happen. This question, as is, may receive downvotes or votes to close. — lit 28 secs ago

@TrisT If you look at the user's other contributions to this site, you'll see his attitude is not warranted. He may have experience with specific math functions, but calling anyone curious, who wants to learn more about the subject "kiddies" and complaining about "inexperienced software engineers" when he somehow struggles to understand how sleep() works, is just the kind of toxicicity that I dislike seeing in this profession. I understand that the answer to properly understand the implementation of these functions is hard, but this just seems to be rambling self-fellatio. — Hayley 37 secs ago
