@Someprogrammerdude That is good to know. I've generally steered away from mapping that first page because many programmers rely on that being unmapped, but you're right that it doesn't necessarily need to be that way. — tedtanner 58 secs ago

@dimich Only a Sith deals in absolutes, and apparently I am a Sith. Without address virtualization, I would likely back off of my statement. My opinion is that in systems with address virtualization, because many programmers assume 0 is unmapped, one shouldn't map that page to avoid issues arising from bad assumptions. — tedtanner 40 secs ago

Sigh... one thing you really need to be able to do as a software engineer is to be able to find and read documentation... learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/winsock/…Pepijn Kramer 53 secs ago

Voting to close as off-topic since this question is not about a specific programming problem, a software algorithm, or software tools primarily used by programmers. Read about what's on-topic in the help center, and How to Ask. — aneroid 31 secs ago

@JohnBollinger thx, i will :) My reflection is simply that when you compare the python and glibc documentation, the python documentation is much more readable. Coming to a conclusion, for all advanced C programmers, the documentation contains many mental shortcuts and lacks many cause and effect relationships - at least that's my impression. Documentation never equals documentation. — reg3x_mr 45 secs ago

@reg3x_mr, yes, Unix manual pages traditionally have a strong "reference manual" vibe, and their intended audience is C programmers with a certain level of language and OS sophistication. This is not universally regarded as a good thing, but neither is it universally regarded as a problem. If you're not there yet then there is abundant secondary material that may be helpful to you. HOWEVER, Stack Overflow is for programming questions, not language or documentation criticism. I take most of the negativity in these comments to spring from you diverging towards the latter. — John Bollinger 39 secs ago

Thank you for your understanding. I don't want to criticize anything, but only defend myself against accusations such as "he doesn't read the documentation" or "he didn't do anything and is asking." I would especially like to draw attention to the fact that most advanced programmers do not realize that sometimes not everything is clear at first glance :) — reg3x_mr 5 secs ago

Yes, software recommendations are off topic on Stackoverflow in general, I assume because there is no definitive answer based on facts which increases the chance of flame wars. For questions on which software to use there is softwarerecs.stackexchange.comRobert 54 secs ago

I've never looked at these online language learning sites, but I certainly see a lot of questionable code coming from folk who use them. The fact that i and j are global variables is a major red flag. And no: you are not running into compiler bugs. New programmers love to blame the compiler for things they don't yet understand. — paddy 8 secs ago
