Anything that can program an AVR will have to be classified as a "digital device" because that's what is needed to program an AVR (ATmega328 for example). The microprocessors have a defined protocal to program them, and some sort of "digital device" is needed to do that. There
are stand-alone programmers, but you still need a computer to compile the code to generate the hex file to upload to the programmer which will program the chip. We've come a long way from the light-bulbs and toggle switches of the PDP-8, PDP-11, DG Nova mini-computers. —
