@GetSet we're all programmers i know, some of us are seniors and others still learning, the only difference between all of us is human decency, there's those who criticize based on correct judgments, and others who criticize because they've been criticized so much that they wanna do it to everybody for no reason. — wassim 50 secs ago

The backslash is the MAIN example... R is such a "borked-up" language, and the pandemonium persists. How many bad languages does it take to screw up many generations of programmers? Python solves this so easily and nicely with the r'string' notation. Why can't the R core community just adopt a ( r"\New" ) notation that works? — Rich Lysakowski PhD 18 secs ago
ML Classification 0.0015126348613189366 (Old classification 0.42000002)
So why hasn't somebody done it? Or why haven't people implored the R compiler writers to include Python-like raw strings in the language specification? What a breakthrough and a new social justice that would be for the R masses !! In the meantime Pythonistas are spending / wasting less time than R Programmers trying to escape (literally) silly string problems or asking questions hopeful questions on StackOverflow. Instead, Pythonistas are moving on to solving bigger problems at an ever-increasing rate. — Rich Lysakowski PhD 35 secs ago

@RobG I see. I thought keeping it simple is what we programmers should try and aim for. If this solves the issue, why do you need the date library? Anyway I am pretty sure an onSubmit/onClick is required to do any sort of preprocessing. — Rutwick Gangurde 28 secs ago

Overly complex and memory hog are also things however. Learning to be precise and code carefully are also worthy goals, and depending on the application might be required. A blanket "don't do it" for something simple like array manipulations seems wrongheaded to me as a mentor and teacher of new programmers. — ggb667 54 secs ago

I don't disagree that it appears that way ... but if this is ever productionized (used in an automated fashion where it is feasible that it is just mylist <- c("TI - a", "AU - b"), then I argue it's much better to be defensive up-front. Also, with "budding programmers", I find it best to recommend solutions that are more robust ... or at least note the assumption in the answer. I personally would be interested in some "agent" in R that looks for the use of 1:length(...) and produces a message or warning, to warn of potential problems ... perhaps that's the "Hal9000" of R parsers :-) — r2evans 39 secs ago

Microsoft are using their confused non-standard version of it, while at the same time displaying confused warnings when using well-documented, perfectly safe standard functions. Maybe the worlds' C programmers can do a fundraiser to arrange lots of free booze for the MS people, every night before a C2x community meeting? :) — Lundin 40 secs ago
