To elaborate on why you should return the List interface instead of an implementation: You don't want to unnecessarily restrict the users of the methods that you write. All you care about is that it's a list, not really what kind of list it is. You could even return a Map that has a key-value pair for females and males (notice here you would return a Map and not a HashMap or LinkedHashMap or TreeMap or something else. Any type of Map will do). Hope this helped clear that up. A lot of newer Java programmers don't think about this, and I liked that it was mentioned. — loganrussell48 5 secs ago

This site is for specific questions related to programming (code) or use of programmers tools. What are the pros and cons? is not anything close to being a specific question, and What is the best option? is clearly opinion-based and non-specific. You'll find your experiences here will be much better if you spend some time taking the tour and reading the help center pages to learn how the site works and what is (and is not) appropriate to ask here before you begin posting. — Ken White just now

This should be on Super User instead, as it is not a programming related question. This site is strictly for questions related to programming (code) or use of a programmers tool such as an IDE, compiler or API. General computer and OS related questions are more appropiate to ask at Super User. — Ken White 18 secs ago

Don't "fix" the code in the question! It makes any answer worthless, and your question won't have any problems anymore. It's enough to mark an answer as accepted. Remember that this site isn't only for you right now, but for future programmers with similar or the same problem as well. — Some programmer dude 42 secs ago

stackoverflow.com/help/dont-ask ("there is no actual problem to be solved: “I’m curious if other people feel like I do.” and "you are asking an open-ended, hypothetical question: “What if ______ happened?”" and "every answer is equally valid: “What’s your favorite ______?” ). It does not cover "a specific programming problem" nor "a software algorithm" nor "software tools commonly used by programmers" and fails the answerable in "a practical, answerable problem..." — usr2564301 27 secs ago

if you don't know the answer to the question asked, max, why waste anyone's time. "you're misusing it" is unhelpful, off-topic, and btw, wrong. we use cookies correctly, but we want TEST edge cases. you know, like real programmers do. — jpwynn 35 secs ago

I know this is old but static methods are not a "code smell" (a phrase I abhor, sorry) when they either return an instance or take an instance so please be specific so that junior programmers don't get led astray. — WattsInABox 18 secs ago

Somebody should really make some articles or even on book (probably exists...) on LISP programming for non-LISP programmers. It seems like its so different that we need to learn how to learn LISP. After this explanation it doesn't seem so impenetrable. Before I took one look and thought, "what's the point of trying?". — bob 34 secs ago

Before ViewModel, Android didn't have an official way to handle the MVVM pattern. And new programmers that didn't know better would put all of their code directly into an Activity, turning it into a god-class that has to be aware of everything that happens to data and making sure all the views are kept up-to-date, etc. People who did know better used third-party tools like ReactiveX to make something akin to ViewModels and LiveData. — Tenfour04 10 secs ago

Welcome to Stack Overflow. SO is a question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers. The goal is that you add some code of your own to your question to show at least the research effort you made to solve this yourself. — Cyrus 13 secs ago

For Stack Overflow, there's also the issue that SO is a programming site. Questions and answers are about programming related problems. While sometimes that can involve a tool primarily used by programmers for programming, answers should be focused on how to implement a programming-based solution, rather than pointing to a tool that already implements what the question OP wants to implement. I actually don't know enough about this area to judge this answer wrt. that, but it feels like you're pointing the OP at a system level way to do this, rather than how to do it in a program. — Makyen 1 min ago

Thank you. I'm not here definitely for arguing. I had put the citation "as a source". Maybe asking for a link was a mistake. But after a serious search I found only copy-pastes from the book with no explanations. I think the MPI3 mutex worth it to be mentioned. Maybe the problem is really elementary to c programmers, I needed just slightly adjust it... However, I think I'm right with the point. I'm almost sure that some people mentioned in the post rather give up and write a nasty code instead of finding a way. I chose keywords that it could've been a good result for these people. — user 28 secs ago
