It's not something you can learn from looking at other projects. You will miss the intent on why it's designed like it is. @Peabodyjr. : A bash array is not of fixed size. Hence it does not matter whether you know the number of elements in advance. In your case, you could have an associative array (like a Perl Hash) where the key is a state abbreviation. BTW, if you do the whole thing in Perl, you certainly need any awk/grep/sed anymore. Another possibility would be to go for Zsh, which has IMO more features which can attract programmers. You could also go for Ruby, which I find even less complex than Perl. — user1934428 32 secs ago

FWIW, that sounds like a terrible idea. Changing default behaviour is almost guaranteed to produce problems in some way or another, either with 3rd party code that depends on that default behaviour, or with other programmers later which expect default behaviour. More general tipps: 5) Don't extend windows unnecessarily. There is likely no good case to do so here. 6) Don't mix Swing & AWT components. Use JButton and JLabel etc. instead. 7) Use meaningful & descriptive variable names, don't just number them.
