@vidarlo The 'private' policy (on Stack Moderators Questions) was what set the whole thing off. But discontent had been building for a while. I see some positive signs in early negotiation between the company and Mods at the moment on Discord.
@vidarlo So I usually 'Destroy' the user as well although there are recommendations for and against doing this.
@BeastOfCaerbannog Another issue is the correlation between a sudden drop in activity on SE with the arrival of ChatGPT. As for causation: 1. Mods have frightened too many people away with unnecessary suspensions 2. People are getting their answers from ChatGPT (in part because of a toxic reputation on SE) 3. Whatever process of decreasing activity on SE, seen since 2014, is continuing and accelerating. 4. Some unpleasant mix of 1, 2 and 3. 5. The drop off has nothing to do with AI/LLM (unlikely?)
Strike stats seem to be levelling out: 06/09/2023 12:00 PM: 109 moderators (+0) covering 76 sites, 16 former moderators (+0) and 968 curators (+3) - 1093 total (+3).

Yep, I think it's levelling off, and probably no new mods, but some more curators will probably tick in

For me this is one of the answers that has made most sense in the current debacle: meta.stackexchange.com/a/389960/662263
@vidarlo It would be interesting if the total Mod figures would show a breakdown of active and inactive Mods and percentages. AU has some quite low activity Mods and this would factor in our total participation in the strike

@andrew.46 Absolutely. The number of mod actions performed by the signers would be funny stat, albeit probably not possible to get.

@vidarlo I have seen a small number of Mods on quieter sites only become aware of the strike when their sites have become flooded with spam all of a sudden :)
I certainly appreciate the Charcoal people a lot more now...
And I look forward so much to powering into the Mod work when the strike is over :)

7:58 AM
@andrew.46 Yep - and quite some who come in here and ask about the spam. So it's spreading slowly.
Some of the smaller sites are more or less dead anyway
Has any site apart from windows phone been killed off?

@vidarlo Don't know I'm afraid
@vidarlo I spent some time in the Veganism & Vegetarianism beta site and it was very, very slow.

Yes, I've answered a few questions on sustainable living site, and answers is still on front page after months
bottom of the front page on SL is beginning of february
Then there's no community, no activity and in my opinion no reason for the site to be open to new questions anymore

@vidarlo I saw the Maths Overflow people talking on Discord and I admit I was not aware that they are not 'owned' by Stack Overflow, Inc.

Q: Who owns MathOverflow?

François G. DoraisIs MathOverflow a subsidiary of Stack Exchange? Did MathOverflow lose its independence when it migrated to the Stack Exchange network?

Now that would be fantastic if it were the case with Ask Ubuntu!

interesting twist
I was thinking about that the other day - AU is potentially big enough to actually work and function as a separate site

@vidarlo Now that would be cool! And it would get around the weirdness of having Unix & Linux as well as Ask Ubuntu

8:13 AM
yep
tho, that would make space for an OpenSUSE site on SEInc...
;)

And Jon Ericson keeps putting out great articles: jlericson.com/2023/06/07/strike_progress.html

8:35 AM
Nice piece. He knows the company and the community

@andrew.46-OnStrike I agree. It's a multivariate problem in reality and attributing the activity drop to only one cause is wrong.

@BeastOfCaerbannog It would be interesting to know where the push is coming from. Best not to be the meat in the sandwich: The CMs

@andrew.46-OnStrike Haha, yeah!

@andrew.46-OnStrike middle management... no power, but has to defend stuff.

@vidarlo Before I retired I rose in my position to take on more responsibility and pick up extra money. But I made sure that I did not move into management positions, exactly for that reason

8:47 AM
Same goes for me.
I'm in the technical track
But relaxing there as well. I don't need more money right now.

Q: We need to ensure that Ask Ubuntu's archive remains publically available

Jorge CastroI was disappointed to find out that this is a problem: June 2023 Data Dump is missing We need to make sure we preserve our community contributions for the next generation, does anyone have the bandwidth to investigate this?

Q: Will SE shut down the free API for good?

Mad Scientist - on strikeSE has intentionally disabled the data dump. And the CEO has stated to the press that he plans to charge AI companies for access to the data. Given these developments I think it is almost inevitable to expect more restrictions on data access, as just disabling the data dump is unlikely to stop AI...

Hi, I have published a meta.SE post, which is in the process of being downvoted to disappearance. If you find it agreeable what I write, and believe that it could have a positive impact, you could help bringing it back to visibility:

Q: Open feedback and questions for Philippe (regarding communication around the AI policy rollout)

LeventeFor context: Philippe, you have published this post, to which, one of my responses was this post. I have received your response in the form of a comment, which, for the sake of a duly structured response, I wish to address here. I will use my observations as the basis for questions that I will po...

@andrew.46-OnStrike we aren't owned by Canonical...

Also, if it's not worthy of upvoting, I would welcome feedback about how to introduce my points better.

Levente, I don't think it's appropriate to create a new post to talk about Philippe's comment. Perhaps, create a chatroom, invite Philippe and chat with them if they enter the room.
Philippe's bio states this: "You're very welcome to reach out to me at any time, but I will caution that I get a huge amount of email, and I'm probably not the best person to help you. If you need help with this or any of our sites, I strongly advise you to check the help center or try sending us a note through the contact form. If all else fails, you can try sending me an email at philippe@stackoverflow.com, but be aware that it may be some time before I can respond."

@RandomPerson Yeah, exactly, half of his bio seems to be about a discouragement against contacting him... (I have seen that earlier) (but that's why I titled my post "open feedback", as in "open letter")

Q: We may need to migrate away from the StackExchange platform. If you know how, please start the preparation

LeventeI caught wind of a new insight (credit: @leanne), that enables some foreshight into aspects of the possible future. @andrew.46-OnStrike What do say. It seems SEInc is preparing for something.
data dump disabled deliberatly
@andrew.46-OnStrike I'm not less inclined to depart permanently
