@Tanker Hi! In case you're interested, there's /dev/chat, which isn't Debian-specific, but I believe a number of Debian users can be found there.
(Oh, you already found it, I just needed to scroll down there. Sorry!)

hi i just gave a command sudo cp -r ~/Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98 ~/opt/ but it did nothing because when i checked list of files in /opt there was no idea-IC-192...... folder ? so what it did ? I am confused please help

you added a ~ in front of /opt/
so check /home/$USER/opt for the file

@Rinzwind oh thankyou ,I was actually trying to copy this intellij idea installation folder to /opt
first i tried this sudo cp -r /Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98 /opt/
then it asked for password which i gave
and it splashed a warning cp: cannot stat '/Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98': No such file or directory

that 1st one is missing a ~ in front of /Downloads/

so then i tried ~ to both the locations

9:44 AM
wrong too >:-D /opt/ is an absolute path so no ~ :)

ok so you mean I should have given this command sudo cp -r ~/Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98 /opt/

sudo cp -r ~/Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98 /opt/
yes
2 things: you do this from the USER that owns that home. 2. you will be asked the admin password

Q: SSH to Linux host with smart card not working

user568021I would like to connect to ssh host using the following command: ssh -I /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opensc-pkcs11.so HOSTNAME The error says that the library returned no slots.. debug1: provider /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opensc-pkcs11.so: manufacturerID cryptokiVersion 2.20 libraryDescr...

ok I am the USER who owns that home , but I am little confused with directories ,what i see going through other locations there is a section called "computer" which have all these opt root etc usr etc so they are absolute paths right ?
i don't need to use ~ for absolute paths but other locations of users like documents/downloads etc need ~ symbol ?
when using terminal

yes those are absolute

9:48 AM
?

the ~ is a shorthand for /home/$USER/ where $USER is replaced with the user you at that time are using.

@Rinzwind oh ok got it ,so which my command sudo cp -r ~/Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98 ~/opt/ it actually created an /opt/ folder in /home/$USER/ and then copied intellij to this folder ?

what is does is this
sudo cp -r /home/user/Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98 /home/user/opt/
where user again is your username

No actually i am trying to understand what exactly my command "sudo cp -r ~/Downloads/newfolder1/idea-IC-192.5728.98 ~/opt/" did ?

do a ls ~ and it should show opt/

9:53 AM
no no i got what you explained

@user716691 that I posted 2 lines above that ;-)

yes its showing a ls there and files got copied into that folder

doing a sudo mv ~/opt/* /opt/ probably fixes it
all you are left with then is the ~/opt/ dir in your home

@Rinzwind no no what i am asking that do /home/$USER folder itself have that /opt/ folder by default or it created a new /opt/ there through my command

nope. A home does not have an opt/

9:59 AM
@Rinzwind your suggestion created a little mess mv ~/opt/* /opt/ option copied all files but without combining them into a particular folder
so now i need to put them into idea-IC-192.5728.98 folder manually

ah then remove the contents of opt and redo the initial command from Downloads :)

@Rinzwind no i did mv to each item manually though it was tedious but i got practice of moving files ,thanks to you ,thanks for being great help :)
@Rinzwind got another problem was trying to install intellij idea ,so went to its /bin folder and gave command ./idea.sh and it gave following warning
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM warning: Option UseConcMarkSweepGC was deprecated in version 9.0 and will likely be removed in a future release.
WARNING: An illegal reflective access operation has occurred
WARNING: Illegal reflective access by com.intellij.ide.ClassUtilCore to field sun.net.www.protocol.jar.JarFileFactory.fileCache
WARNING: Please consider reporting this to the maintainers of com.intellij.ide.ClassUtilCore
WARNING: Use --illegal-access=warn to enable warnings of further illegal reflective access operations
should i proceed ??
what is illegal access ??
should I proceed ??

10:23 AM
warnings are not for you but for developers.
and "WARNING: All illegal access operations will be denied in a future release" means it is not a problem but will be someday

ok and what this means " Use --illegal-access=warn to enable warnings of further illegal reflective access operations "
i mean after this warning a graphical interface has opened to proceed further installation so I'm not getting how should i give this --illegal-access=warn command inbetween an ongoing operation ?
any explanation to it ?

don't bother. That is what a developer needs to include into the script
all of these "warnings" are not for us users

developer means linux destro developers ? because i am also a developer though i work with softwares/coding etc

developers of that specific piece of software ;)
so openjdk

no its intellijidea developed by jetBrains and i have manually installed JDK through official oracle website but not through openjdk

10:37 AM
but the error is from "OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM warning" :)

so the warning" Illegal reflective access by com.intellij.ide.ClassUtilCore to field sun.net.www.protocol.jar.JarFileFactory.fileCache " seems because of intellij access of jdk files or something right ??
yeah but i haven't installed jdk through openjdk ,it may be intellij has its own verion from openjdk but then why it creating a warning

Could be a mismatch in versions (intellij expecting an older version than now used)

that's surprising ,i mean a warning should be there if that particular software files create any conflict with my system files ? isn't ?
i am using jdk 1.8

naah. developers use it to warn others that use this software to update their software. Gives them time to fix it and when the option is removed only old software remains. And those will then get marked as abandoned.

thanks for letting me know this in detail but i denied to install ,because normally i read everything before installing any piece of software into my system ,jetbrains asking my personal identifiable information to an extent like ,ips, email id , name ,etc .i don't get why a developer should provide all this info in detail ?? its too much
i can go with any other IDE ,shouldn't I ?

10:49 AM
I always insert fake info into those :D

Can questions such as this and this be regarded as bugs or possible bugs and be closed as off-topic?

bugs are off topic unless we can provide an answer (and all subsequent q's are then dupes). As in ... if there is a fix the fix can be the answer
and "upgrade to Ubuntu xx.xx" is also a valid answer :D

@Rinzwind No it was the information they tend to collect reflecting in their privacy policy ,they didn't allow a user to withdraw from it ,and the kind of info they are collecting seems a way too much for me ,normally companies are more into application use data rather than going into personally identifiable data isn't it ? correct me if I'm wrong

Or install a snap if that has the fix? But then the questioner moved the goal posts like this: "Thanks, VLC is just an example. What about other software?"

you can put fake info if they ask for a form submission ,but not in background data collected by companies ? i hope you got what they exactly trying to do in the name of open source

10:59 AM
@DKBose The OP wrote in the original question: According to them, installing VLC media player 3.0.7 will fix the issue. This turned that question from a bug question into a software installation question.

@DKBose ignore it. the q is clearly about vlc
@DKBose that too is possible yes :)

@Rinzwind I ignored it the last time but today there was another. So I'm just wondering whether each security issue reported about software in Universe is a legitimate question for AU to "support".
It reminds me of the frequent issues with Flash and Java and Adobe reader :)

11:20 AM

(unrelated to above) SE got some UI changes?

@Kulfy noticed that as well!

Looks unnecessary under the title. Right side was better.

agreed

@Kulfy To clarify, that post was the Late Answers review, where formatting and clarity problems should be fixed by editing, and where (if the reviewer knows about the topic or can otherwise reasonably evaluate the post) answers should be voted on. Alternatively, it's always fine to click Skip. In this case, the formatting was the thing that most clearly should've been fixed there. Typically incorrect answers that have nothing else wrong with them shouldn't receive flags or delete votes.
I'm not sure if that particular answer merits deletion and I haven't voted to do so even though I could. (At least I think I haven't--I don't know of any efficient way to check if I have voted to delete a post that has not been deleted.)
I very much hope that this doesn't come across as a pile on -- I'm saying this to clarify that the Late Answers and First Posts queues are for more than flagging NAA (though flags can, and sometimes should, be raised there), and I more want to spread awareness about that general point than to say anything about this particular case.

can not set codeblock askubuntu.com/posts/1160962 here.

11:54 AM
@Bahamut You mean askubuntu.com/questions/1160962/…, right?
(For some reason, the /posts/ URLs don't work without something like /revisions or /timeline at the end. I don't know if this was always the case or is recent.)

yep @EliahKagan

How is it supposed to be formatted? Should the middle part be a single line of code, or multiple lines?

I'm in an other ubuntu community, where I have to formate und mv questions. so it is a reflex to format all. Do how it is right please @EliahKagan

You are definitely right to want to fix the formatting. I'm just not sure whether or not the output they're showing is intended to contain line breaks.
But nothing like [22661.447946] appears after the beginning. So it was probably printed without any newlines in the middle. I'll (try to) edit it.

thank you it makes me nervose :D

12:00 PM
@EliahKagan Incorrect answers that have nothing else wrong might lead to "noise" IMO.

@Bahamut I was able to make the change. I'm not sure why it didn't let you. Maybe a bug? Did you get an error message when you tried to submit the post or something.
@Kulfy Well, especially since people on Ask Ubuntu seem to be extremely reluctant to downvote answers. :)

yeah something with 6 sings. sorry I cannot remember correctly.

Q: imac with second Apple screen on Ubuntu 18.04

SigurAfter 2 weeks testing and failing to find a solution I decided to ask help. I'll summarize my situation. imac 27" (from 2014) + Thunderbolt display 27" + Linux It was working perfectly when I was using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in the past, but after some update, the second monitor didn't work. So, I ...

@Bahamut Oh, right. If you don't have editing privileges yet and your edits have to be approved by other users, your edits have to change at least six characters in the post, and an indent of one line is just four characters. Asking for it edit in chat was quite reasonable (as it would anyway if you were unsure). Another thing I think you can do is use code fences instead, since they're six characters. Or, often, you can fix other problems with the post too, which is the reasons for the limit.

A: Implement ```-style (fenced) Markdown code blocks

balphaCode fences work now. function DeepThought(task) { this.task = task; } DeepThought.prototype.answer = function () { switch (this.task) { case "life, universe, and everything": return 42; default: throw "not implemented"; } } (view source on this answer) As much as ...

Okay, understood.

12:07 PM
(Note that those can be used in place where a four-space indent is reasonable -- to make a code block. They're not equivalent to single backticks, which make a code span.)

@EliahKagan Being stingy

@Kulfy Thanks, but I get the message " declined - flags should not be used to indicate technical inaccuracies, or an altogether wrong answer " when I flag wrong answers & by down voting I lose points(imagine losing 4-5 points everyday is not good at all, collecting points is hard for me), what else can I do?

For that particular post, the main thing to do from the Late Answers review queue was fix the very bad formatting. But you can also vote on answers, and should, if you can determine that a vote is reasonable. (So, in that case, a downvote.) Voting shouldn't be done indiscriminately but it is one of the most common and important actions for those queues. I recall the system actually prevents us from reviewing Late Answers and First Posts when we've used up all our votes for the day.

@Coditoergosum declining is a mod thing. But IMO you may consider leaving a comment that why it's wrong. I think may be VLQ flag helps since it sends post to Low Quality Queue to get review AFAIK and can be reviewed by non-mods.

I wouldn't use the actual VLQ flag. I don't know exactly what that's for these days, but in my experience it doesn't seem to apply to situations that aren't also NAA, and doesn't even apply to most NAA posts. I don't know the details of how we should use VLQ these days but I think @Zanna does.

12:17 PM
@Kulfy I vaguely remember that VLQ is to be used only in extremely rare occasions.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's right. I'm not clear on what is currently considered to be those occasions, though.

yeah VLQ should really be obvious.
7
Q: Again three VLQ flags have been declined. Can anyone explain?

Pilot6I flagged three answers: https://askubuntu.com/questions/805304/what-driver-should-i-use-for-best-performance-amd/805388#805388 for being VLQ. It has been converted to a comment, but my flags has been declined. Ubuntu 16.04 's compatability with i5 Skylake as a link-only. Same thing the answer ...

see the bold ;)
I used to flag link only as VLQ but was told to use NAA
A link only CAN be edited to be improved :=) and that is valid for every answer. so VLQ is useless.

Yeah, I've definitely had VLQ flags declined.
@Kulfy Ah, the -1 rep. :) The especially odd thing is the reluctance to downvote answers clearly are NAA and will soon be deleted. I'm not saying there's an obligation to do so.
But it puts them at the bottom of the page (in the default view), makes them easier to delete, and avoids making it seem like the community views answers nobody voted on yet the same as non-answers. (Sometimes people are reluctant to downvote because they don't want to be mean, but I think the effect is that having a post with a zero score seems mean.)
I wonder if people don't know they get their 1 rep back if the post is deleted.

don't we get downvotes back when the answer is deleted?

Yes.

12:22 PM
@EliahKagan ARGH!

you you ninja editor

I don't think that was an edit. It was a separate chat message, right?
I think there can be skew in the order in which messages initially appear for different users. I think.

also possible :P I saw it pop after I pressed enter

Well, I want people to know about how they get their 1 rep back, so from my perspective, the duplication is not harmful at all. :)

Now, it is with some trepidation that I say this stuff about downvoting, since I recall one time I mentioned that people should consider doing more downvoting, I noticed that a handful of questions got downvoted massively while most bad posts (especially NAA answers) still didn't get downvotes at all.

Thanx, anyway you're right. I'll review less & I try to improve the quality of my reviews.

@EliahKagan I believe the VLQ flag is virtually useless, since it is only to be used for posts which are unreadable nonsense, for example containing only repeated words or punctuation. Such posts can be flagged as NaA quite reasonably IMHO, but I have read that we can flag such posts as offensive. I prefer to use VLQ and not red flags, because they are not offensive, but I guess the idea is to remove them as quickly as possible

@Coditoergosum I don't think you have to review less -- but if the quality of your reviews is suffering, then maybe review more slowly? (Or maybe that's what you mean, if so then sorry for being pedantic.)

Especially reviewing answers should be done by more experienced users.

12:30 PM
*not offensive, except to our finely honed Stack Exchange cleaning sensibilities :)
@Coditoergosum I suppose we gain experience by practising :)
in any case, the button is my friend
most of the posts I look at in review, I don't know what to do with, so I just skip them

I mean quantity doesn't matter, I've got used to review 20 posts everyday, I think it's not good.
If it reduces the quality.

20 is a lot. I am lucky if I can manage to review 3 or 4 First Posts. It is hard work.

@Coditoergosum And nobody is perfect. Mistakes happen. But we can try to improve ourselves to avoid the same mistakes in future. I pinged you just to let you know that your actions weren't right. I think if nobody pinged you pointing where you went wrong, you might have assumed that your action was right and that might have affected your future reviews. In the end, it's not about how many you do, it's about what you do. :)

Yeah, the Late Answers and First Posts queues are definitely the more demanding in terms of the considerations that should go into each review.

@Kulfy yes you're right & it was constructive.

12:37 PM
I recommend just considering each of the things you can do on the post and asking oneself if they are appropriate in each particular case. For answers, that's editing, upvoting, downvoting, commenting, deleting a comment you previously posted, upvoting one or more existing comments, flagging the post, flagging one or more existing comments, voting to delete the post (though that privilege requires 20k rep for answers), and whatever I'm forgetting. :)
I believe all those actions cause the "No Action Needed" button to be replaced with an "I'm Done" button (though I'm not sure if flagging comments and deleting one's own comments does that). Even then, though, if one suspects it needs another looks, one can still click "Skip." Clicking "Skip" after performing actions in the Late Answers and First Posts reviews doesn't undo any of those actions.

1:19 PM
dont bother posting those @DKBose :D before we can click they are gone

It was fairly long lasting. Smoke Detector did not find it.

It was there longer than expected ... I know that they normally go off quickly :D

then kick smokey >:-D

I still manage to get a few. I think the automatic flags are limited to two less than the needed number?

Q: Ubuntu sudoers issue with cmnd_alias

William DossettI have an ansible script that modifies aws instances. It adds a user to them and the adds lines to sudoers so that new user can execute specific commands. I use Cmnd_Alias for the commands.. sudoers looks like this: Cmnd_Alias BMCCMDS = /bin/cat, /usr/sbin/lsof, /usr/bin/test, /bin/ls, /usr/sbi...

2:08 PM
@DKBose I get a few too, especially answers

@Zanna those are the more sneaky ones!

ha. what 6 people here upvoted my comment here?
what is the actual notification you get? I would purge it and install it again if I was you. Could it be you neglected to accept the EULA the 1st time? :) — Rinzwind 5 hours ago

@DKBose I think a certain critical mass of users is watching the front page such that spam gets zapped near instantly if Smokey flags it, whereas answers depend more on reviewers to cast flags

yeah I only use the FP :=) spam at the top is instantly eradicated

@Zanna Guilty! Even worse, I have askubuntu.com/questions?pagesize=50&sort=newest open mostly rather than askubuntu.com/questions?tab=Active

2:22 PM
@DKBose I used to watch unanswered, but for a long time I've come at everything through review and 10k tools and only look at the front page to see if my edits are too fast

@Zanna I avoid the review queue. It makes my head ache!

@DKBose very understandable XD

boah need Ice-cream

@WinEunuuchs2Unix It seems to be a bit controversial because the questioner kept adding on stuff after the question was initially answered. Maybe there are "cleaner" Q&A's on the topic?

5:05 PM
@DKBose I know I've refined questions to narrow it down to exactly what I'm looking for after comments and answers were posted. I can see how it's annoying to some but that shouldn't be a reason for closing question "Narrowing Scope to Specific Problem" is not a close reason.
I do thank you for your input though :)

5:21 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix "do I need" makes it opinionated.

A missing hyphen can make your post Hot network question and get 9 upvotes on the answer -_-

@Rinzwind OK I guess no one else finds the Answers interesting and worthy of reopening.

Someone told me four years ago I should learn Java. Now a new Question (askubuntu.com/questions/1160950/interfacing-dbus-using-gjs) is forcing me to learn JavaScript and D-BUS so I can answer the question with many hours of education, trial and error :P Makes me wonder how many hours people here spend in Java, Python, C, Bash, HTML, etc. every week? Also how many are pure users and spend no time developing software?

I run away strident from a bash skript.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix he was joking :D python+html+javascript+sql: 30 hours a week.

SQL is far more important for me (+ how to connect with it wih different languages).
Plus I code lots of webservices/APIs in python.
