Q: Why so many answers are in comments

marosgEvery morning I click on unanswered link and every morning I see many of questions answered in comments section. When this happens, person who asked the question cannot mark it as answered, it cannot be upvoted and it looks like there are much more unanswered questions then there should be. Are t...

@Zanna I am not sure. May be for another 100 years. Government is getting strict for its protection and AFAIK the region isn't prone to any natural calamity.

@Kulfy humanity is though, but hopefully that won’t touch it :)

@dessert There were industries near it a decade ago. Taj's color started becoming yellowish from white. Government passed an order to move their industries from the region.

Q: Why is "community" bumping questions that are over 5 years old?

xenoidSuch as this one, but that's not the only one. What is the point? The question is often as obsolete as the software involved. This is a waste of our time. Shouldn't there be some "Answer before" date on questions?

People don't understand that if they communicate on their question once or twice a week, you're losing the flow to write an answer.

Q: Opening and closing Ubuntu applications in multiple displays

R71I am facing a peculiar problem in Ubuntu 18.04. I have an extended display in office, and I had opened a csv file with libreoffice and viewed it in the extended display, and then closed it that display. Now I am at home, and have only the laptop display available, and when I am trying to open th...

Hi @JacobVlijm, I have a question about python. Maybe youre able to give me some insight, I have a chatbot im writing on, and i want somehow manage after i closed down the botclass with its loop to restart the main script itself. How can i bes go about that

@JacobVlijm This is ubuntu bug, I have hdmi in xrandr output while it was not turned on since boot. This starts to happen after configuring monitors in standard cinnamon gui. I thought its because cable connected, but after reading this question, think everyone have it.

@Zanna south of where you are: financialexpress.com/industry/technology/… Although I've read articles like that for several years ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Q: Proxy doesn't work in command line with ubuntu and kali on virtualBox

jayjaypg22I've installed kali linux on a vm on virtualBox. I'm behind an enterprise proxy, specified in the network proxy parameter of kali. The same ip/ port for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and socks host. @DKBose woohoo :)

@Videonauth in a local situation, no problem, but this is webstuff, right?

@Kulfy 100 years is not long

@Zanna “how long it lasts” is very relative: traces like foundation walls will probably exist thousands of years no matter what, provided nobody removes them willingly,

1:54 PM
@JacobVlijm I have promote your script there askubuntu.com/a/1143760/449979

@Zanna the 1st 50 flew away for me :=)

@LeonidMew Hah, thanks :) I am not sure that is what he wants though. His issue is that windows are seemingly lost after disconnecting the second monitor. Quite easy to edit the script to do the same trick, but not as background process but on shortcut key, so he just needs to press the shortcut instead of the 20 steps plan he is performing now :)
...But he was too grumpy. Let him wait for a while. (kidding :) )

@Zanna Everything is relative :-)

@AaronHall You're like a dev wizard, right? >:-)
Would you mind giving my StackOverflow question some love?
(If outside of your competencies by posting a bounty? I'll return the favour when you have a particularly difficult Ubuntu question that is outside of my competencies)
@jokerdino You're running behind the times, man! ;-)
Rebooting back into my custom kernel. Latest kernel update still has slow WiFi.

@Kulfy I'm pretty sure you're not a puppy: You're an AI because you don't sleep!

@Fabby I do. I ain't a lazy puppy. And I always pass "I am not a robot" captcha.

@Kulfy Yup. Too smart to be a bot!

@Fabby AI gone at another level
@Fabby Since you are from CP/M era, what are your thoughts about this? How cool was Gary?

dumps salt on @Fabby

@ThomasWard :-) Hi! :-)
I don't use salt in any of my cooking, so not very useful to me, but last time I looked I wasn't a slug neither, so unsure how that would affect me unless it's one metric tonne of salt...

Q: Ubuntu SSH Auth Log Shows Proxy IP

ImJTI am trying to figure out an issue I have been having. I am using a webpanel called TinyCP and there is a table for displaying failed login attemps via SSH. All SSH attempts, failed or successful, show that they are coming from my NAT. This then gives them all the same IP addresses and disabled...

@Fabby what about 20 metric tonnes of salt?

@Videonauth Not sure about the setup, is it one and the same executable? if not, is one initiating the other? is there some kind of wrapper involved?

its the same executable, which initiates itself when running or importing it
i made my chatbot having a function to update his own virtualenviroment, but to make it effective i need a way to restart the script itself so it imports the new libs etc

...and what is exactly the trigger, closing a window?

a chatcommand in discord
it should be if I'm right merely like the shutdown command i implemented already just before exiting it shall start a new process --> github.com/Videonauth/ProtonDB-Bot/blob/…
so before exit(0) out of this script starting a new process, i have dabbled with subprocess a while now but that only creates childs and when i end the parrent they are usually gone too
maybe I'm thinking in circles here probably

10:34 PM
@Videonauth Still not sure about the setup haha, but in rare cases when I want an executable to restart itself, I make it run a tiny script (with subprocess.Popen()) subsequently the executable kills itself (in my case a window), the script subsequently waits 0.15 seconds or so and starts up the executable. Example:
    def show_other(self, button, nxt):
        # call the external script to move to the other workspace
        add = "nokeys" if self.nokeys else ""
        subprocess.Popen(
            [os.path.join(plugin_path, "moveto.sh"), str(nxt), add]
        )
self.stop()
And the " restart" bash script:
#!/bin/bash

next_ws=$1
nokeys=$2
wmctrl -s "$next_ws"
sleep 0.15
/usr/lib/budgie-desktop/plugins/budgie-wprviews/wprv $nokeys&
...Only the two lines at the bottom are interesting of course.
Example from: github.com/UbuntuBudgie/budgie-extras/blob/master/… Not sure if this is what you are looking for though, nor sure if it is needed in your case at all.

Ok, well that is for sure an opetion, i was trying the whole day to find a proper way to not use a helper script but that will do for sure too, will save me that response into a text file so i can go over it tomorrow over the day
i thought aswell of subprocess.popen or something else what starts a edtached process and then simply exit the script, in bash i simply would call the script itself but python is a bit more tricky while it is easier in most other ways

Yeah, always looking for the elegant way, but if I can' t find it, if it works it works.

I wonder what would happen if i call subprocess.check_output(['./bot.py &\; disown'])

I guess check_output will always be in sync

well I#ll fiddle tomorrow a bit and over the weekend, its not that this is essential to run the bot, but i always look for ways to improve it
thus the modular approach where you can even load in modules on the fly

10:43 PM
Not really familiar with chatbots

well when i have read the libraries source correctly its a sock connection to the discord API and a wrapper for almost everything so this part is to provide easy access to it
all you need to give to the bot class is the token you get from discord
to be honest the discord.py library is a hot mess right now after they decided to rewrite everything and even change their whole API around

Q: KDE crashes with X2Go on Kubuntu 16.04

BastionX2Go won't work when connecting to my Linux box running Kubuntu 16.04. MATE and XFCE work with X2go fine. X2go has an older version of X server built in and doesn't support some newer features and apparently that's why MATE and XFCE work well with it. KDE is however working when using x2go to c...
