Q: How to change extents of logical volume on LVM physical volume

NukolasI am trying to resize an encrypted physical volume so that I have free space to make a dual boot system. So far, I've successfully decrypted the PV, resized the filesystem and the LVs but when I try to resize the PV I run into issues relating to the sector extents of my LVs. root@ubuntu:/home/...

Q: how to let the systemd cryptsetup automatically mount the usb key which contain keyfile?

The keyfile is at the root of usb key filesystem. usbkey has uuid yyyy. the /etc/crypttab is like this: encrypted UUID=xxxx /keyfile:UUID=yyyy luks,keyfile-timeout=60,x-systemd.device-timeout=2min The automatically generated generator is /run/syste...

@karel Vrolijk Kerstfeest! Verwacht je dat ik de bounty hier aan jou geef?

I PM'd some of the top upvoted users of the partitioning tag about the bounty, but none of them posted an answer to the bounty question, so I answered it myself. The tricky element in this question as I see it is Windows Boot Manager. If there was just a single boot on a new disk, then Boot-Repair would be able to create a new EFI System Partition that grub would recognize, however the trick in this question is that Windows in the dual boot has to recognize the EFI System Partition too.

@gparyani Hi! What are you doing here???
>:-) Accidentally entered the wrong room?

Nope, I'm here because I have a question about Ubuntu ;)
So basically, I have a desktop computer running Ubuntu that currently uses an SSD as its main storage drive, and I'd like to convert it to an SSD caching setup with an HDD as the main drive.

Well... I've moved on to Manjaro, but I haven't deleted my Ubuntu partitions yet...

I know how to make a complete copy of data across drives, but I don't know where to start to set up the actual cache.
I'd like to do this without reformatting and reinstalling, if possible.

I looked into that...

I found a question on the site about how to set up bcache, but that requires a complete reinstall.

10:19 PM
Caching is bcache if I'm not mistaken, but give me a few minutes on that

There's another program called lvmcache that may work, but there's not much info online about how it works.

@gparyani To not do a complete re-install: CloneZilla

Using Clonezilla, of course

clone the SSD onto the HDD, then drop into an EFI shell and point the NVRAM to the HDD.
gimme 5 on bcache.

I used it to switch to larger SSDs in two (soon to be three) Windows systems
Other resources elsewhere seem to state that bcache requires one to do a complete reinstall.

@gparyani reading the manual.
AFAIR, if you clone, and point NVRAM to HDD in an EFI shell, the system isn't aware of the SSD anymore and you can do whatever the heck you want

Currently, there's a 250 GB NVMe SSD in the system; my plan is to replace it with a 500 GB NVMe SSD and a 4 TB HDD, with the new SSD acting as a cache.

@gparyani Yeah: re-install....
(thinking)

@gparyani Do you use LVM?

Nope, I don't think so

10:28 PM
(I haven't so far needed it on my machine, but I've used it professionally through a UI on EMC storage)
@gparyani Then you're in for a re-install as well.

Is that so? I've heard of SSD caching solutions for Windows that don't require a reinstall, but I've never used them

Yeah, not I remember why I stopped giving a damn: I've got best of both worlds with yy set-up.
@gparyani / and /home are on my SSD
~/Videos is symlinked to my HDD.

I'd like to have the HDD as the main drive, though, if possible. I don't like having to work with two drives, seeing as multiple people use this computer.
That's why I specifically want a cache
So to users, it appears as just one drive

all of my OS, SWAP, music, docs, config fit on the SSD and only the videos and ebooks: (the hogs in terms of storage) are symlinked to the HDD and I have enough RAM to make video copies go into the cache at all times as I store TV series in 960x540 and movies in 1280*720 only except just a feW.
@gparyani with the symlinks it does look like one drive.
(but I get your point: you want everything to be fast...)
@gparyani Sorry, I'm of no use to you because re-installing was not worth my while, so I never pursued it any further...
I'm using systemd automount now as well, so even NAS drives are symlinked and the directory is just empty when I'm on the road...

laalsaasI am using an Ubuntu 18.04 which was Preinstalled on my dell vostro 5490 and i installed kde Plasma using this Tutorial.
