@terdon I can't remember the dupe or the mod but I'm pretty sure it wasn't you. I guess my point is it's difficult to wear two hats. An answerer is focused on making points a mod focuses on closing,

Q: Bash: call function within function?

user375954I'm trying to get my bash function to call another function that uses bash -c. How do we make functions created earlier in the script persist between different bash sessions? Current script: #!/bin/bash inner_function () { echo "$1" } outer_function () { bash -c "echo one; inner_fu...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix feels mentioned I'm not very active moderating these days either, but that's mostly for personal reasons. Of course modding takes away time for answering, but that's not the only thing.

Will questions on the about-to-be released version (19.10) be allowed a few days before the actual release date? IOW, when should questions on 19.10 not be closed as off-topic (development version, file a bug, etc)?

They will be off-topic until and unless Thomas announces.

Q: When are questions about "ubuntu+1" appropriate?

Jorge Castro"ubuntu+1" is the developmental release of Ubuntu, so it changes every day so it can cause people to have lots of problems and ask for help. So for example people asking 11.04 (aka natty) questions months before the release, etc. I think a bunch of us agreed in chat on how we handle these kind q...

^^ I recommend everyone read that. The consensus on Ubuntu+1 questions is not that they are all off-topic.
@DKBose I have voted to close that question, though. It is very likely due to a bug. I don't think that question falls under any of the areas where we keep Ubuntu+1 questions open.

Q: How can I restrict my computer's ability to connect to other ip's

HemanbabuI have a comma seperated list of IP addresses in a text file like this: 192.xxx.xxx.xxx,213.www.www.www,255.yyy.yyy.yyy Can I block my Ubuntu 19 from connecting to those IP addresses? If yes, How?

@dessert don't let it get to his head...

he deserves to know!

It's fun, this seems the least controversial chatroom on the SE network :)

you’re wrong.
also, we’re just right together here :)

9:40 AM
well i seldon or never saw a chat/modflag for AU room :)

9:52 AM
@Videonauth Um...
We've had our moments.

@terdon well not as long i can see flags in here, sure we had our moments, but they are so seldom far in between that it is not that obvious

It's just been a while. But back when this room was much more active, we had as many flags as you'd expect.

shrugs
:)

The real question is, why are there not more discussions here about which is better, Vim or Emacs? :)

Team Nano !!!
:D

9:55 AM
Oh, speaking of.
In this question, is the OP just effectively asking how to cut and paste in nano?

@EliahKagan ctrl+k == cut , ctrl+u == insert previous cut. Note: when you cut multiple lines they add um in the clipboard and the past inserts all lines (works only on lines) which where cut in succesion. Beside that ctrl+shift+c (copy) ctrl+shift+v (paste)

I'm trying to figure out if cutting and pasting is what the OP is asking for, though.
I've commented. You may want to post an answer if you think it would be helpful, though. From the way it's written, it sounds like the OP just wants to know how to do one specific edit. I have not voted to close the question as unclear.

In the worst case ctrl+g for help or simply F1

Q: iptables redirection

JacarteI have this situation, I am trying to reproduce a redirection attack in one virtual network of mine (some kind of watering hole attack), for academic reasons. I have a main server IP1 which is receiving some calls from the target machine IP2. I want to redirect the complete in and out traffic fro...

Its to not that the cut and insert works only on complete lines
another option would be using search-replace
but for a single line, well it makes no sense to go that lengths simply deleting and retyping it on the correct place would be the quickest solution
or even if he has many files using SED
compared with VI or VIM nano is pretty limited
still prefer it for my day to day needs

One more delete vote needed: askubuntu.com/a/1179181/307523

Vote cast. The post is deleted.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Btw, it occurs to me that my earlier messages did not at all address what I now realize was one important part of what you were saying about closing questions: that waiting before closing an unclear question that seems likely to be a duplicate can result in a better closure as a duplicate.
I still don't think we should wait -- and I think we should be willing to reopen questions that were close as unclear to reclose them as dupes (though often it's necessary to ask additional close voters to participate, because non-moderators can't close a question twice) -- but I think I see what you mean about that.

11:47 AM
@EliahKagan Thanks for delete vote. The "stick in reinstalls" / "stick out gets error" question wasn't a right vs wrong issue I was trying to raise. It was more a discussion topic.I think the guy will come back, read the comment, realize he needs to reboot with Live USB pulled out, focus on error message and post a new question on it.

@DKBose OT because bug report
@dessert there are limited exceptions to the Dev Version rule that are handled case by case :P

Q: Incoming/Outgoing seperation for VPN (hacker protection only)

E LSo I have looked at existing questions and answers, and nothing matches. Because the hacker protection is essential and a...

Can someone please tell me how to bring over here a thread on AskUbuntu which had a lot of comments and were advised to continue in 'chat'? Nothing in FAQs about this.

@PaulBenson You should be able to click on the "continue in chat". That's a link and will create a chat room. What question is this about?

It was an audio problem where user BJM had no sound and could not get alsa to run. Where is this continue to chat link please as I can't see it.

6:52 PM
@PaulBenson I see that you have created a new room but the other person won't be notified of this room unless you comment. Moreover, BJM can't participate in the room since they have <20 reputation points. Rooms created via comments or mod don't have such restrictions.

7:19 PM
I have created the room, and posted that up on the Ubuntu page of his question so he'll see that there. He was advised to continue the comments relating to his issue in 'chat' and now you tell me he can't post in there anyway, so is all pretty pointless really. I think I'll blank 'chat' from now on.

7:45 PM
@PaulBenson You can ask a mod to move the comments to chat.
@terdon, @ThomasWard or @Seth can help :)
If I'm right this is the question.

Q: I CAN'T RUN ANY LINUX ON MY SYSTEM

kartikayWhenever I install any of the LINUX, like CentOS, Kali, Parrot, ubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint and many more the same problem persists, after installing the Linux on the pc when I run the Linux it always has the drivers issue like BRIGHTNESS, SOUNDS and NETWORK issue and when those are fixed after restart...

@PaulBenson Sorry, I just saw your reply now. If you ping me (@terdon) I get notified, but if you don't I won't necessarily see your message. When the site prompts you to move to chat, you can click on the link in the message and that creates a chat room, copies the existing comments to it and ensures that everyone involved in the comment thread can chat there. If you didn't click the first time, just try to leave a new comment and you should be prompted again.
I have now moved the comments to chat: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/99582/…

9:50 PM
@terdon This is ridiculous. You've now managed to screw up my helping this guy for both of us. I had made a valid chatroom which he confirmed as having seen but was unable to post from it. Brilliant! Furthermore - 'click on the link in the message'. What link? What message? If you mean the 'chat' link at the bottom of a user question page that just takes me here, and I don't think you meant that.

@PaulBenson Are you not able to chat in the room created? Aren't all your comments there?
And no, you keep saying you were prompted to move to chat. That prompt is a link and if you click on it, you move to chat.

@terdon Everything's there. I can post. Whether the user will bother with all this hassle is another thing. I wasn't prompted to move to a chatroom. It was the other user who mentioned it and he didn't put up a link. That's why I created that chatroom.

@PaulBenson Well, the user was prompted. And the user can post in the room I created.
In any case, I didn't design this place and don't work for the company behind it, so your anger is misplaced.
I was just trying to help.

10:10 PM
@terdon Well the way you went about this is down to you. And the time I've spent trying to help this guy has probably been wasted. If you'd left things alone that would have been a help. That's the last time I'll bother helping anyone on this site.

@PaulBenson If that's the attitude you have, then yes, I think that would be better for everyone.
