Q: Linux won't boot with Nvidia GTX only

BasjI have a headless computer (no screen / no keyboard) used as a machine-learning training server (using a GPU). I connect it via SSH from my laptop. When: I start the computer with Nvidia GTX 950 as the only graphic card connected on the motherboard, it seems it doesn't boot, and I cannot SSH ...

Q: Xorg log full of RandR output

Simon ReyeI am running Ubuntu 14.04.1 on some specialised hardware that directs manipulates the HDMI output before displaying it to the screen. I am noticing that from time to time the Xorg log goes crazy with constant output as if xrandr is being called and logged again and again and again. Afters a few ...

Q: Problems installing Ubuntu / Kubuntu 18.04 on new build computer

user331383I build a new computer with Gigabyte B360n wifi motherboard (Bios F4), a I7 8700 and a Sapphire Radeon RX 590. Linux Mint KDE 18 Serena booted perfectly, and installed without producing errors in uefi mode with activated csm in bios. (K)Ubuntu did not, even with all combinations of secure boot / ...

Q: Even with WaylandEnable=false gdm3 and lightdm only load sometimes

dairefaganI am happy to use either gdm3 or lightdm, but neither are stable on my Ubuntu 16.04 system, they will work for either one or several boots after I take corrective action, but inevitably this results in the greeter not loading - the last few times (at least) I noticed this was immediately after I ...

Q: Error while trying to compress pdf using ghostscript recursively via loop

UmerI intend to compress a few thousand PDF files in a folder recursively. I tried with following loop: #!/bin/bash find "/home/user/original" -type f -name *.pdf | while read -r file do gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dQUIET -sOutputFile="/...

Q: Is reverse voting or merging a solution in this case?

KulfyI just read a question, Is there a command to factory reset Ubuntu? (asked on Dec '16) which was marked as duplicate of Resetting Ubuntu to factory settings (asked on Feb '15) back in Aug '18. But after seeing votes on the answer (including anonymous votes) and views on the earlier question, I b...

I tend to start giggling when I read questions like “I cannot change my brightness” and “I have a brightness problem”. Maybe I am too childish.

"it doesn't work"

@TheWanderer Those ones just irk me lol
and I usually close them and say "DETAILS NOOB!"
... but in a much more civil way :p

@TheWanderer no thanks, i'm good :P

any "csv" experts? is there an easy way to split a file that has NO enters or linefeeds but does have records that start with the length of the record? Example:
000000010xxxxxxxxxx000000020xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and so on >:)
(in python :+)

That is how Pascal stores strings. Like struct string { int length; char[] data };

hmm that's a good one :P

Q: Should questions closed here and then posted in another SE site be flagged for deletion?

DK BoseFor example, Errors where encountered while processing and mint is weird - Linux mint [on hold] has been put on hold as off-topic. The poster then posted here. Should such questions be flagged for deletion, or left as is?

@Rinzwind What about Perl and its fabulous unpack function?
    #!/usr/bin/env perl

    use strict;
    use warnings;
    use Data::Dumper;

    my $line = '000000011Hello World000000020xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx000000006abcdef';
    my @record = unpack( '(A9/A*)*', $line );
    print Data::Dumper->Dump( [\@record], ['*record'] );
Output:
    @record = (
                'Hello World',
                'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx',
                'abcdef'
              );

burn the perl. BURN THE PERL!
THE PERL IS EVIL

LOL. But you must admit that the simplicity of that unpack line is unbeatable.

@PerlDuck hahaha
@PerlDuck would you mind explaining the (A9/A*)* expression? I don't know Perl, so, feel free to tell me to go and learn things (or adjust my brightness) instead of asking fool questions

5:24 PM
@PerlDuck eh if perl has that does python not? :P
@Zanna SAME Q! >:)

^_^

and is it the same as this docs.python.org/2/library/struct.html ?
@Zanna but(!) I assumed "alphanumeric 9" as the length at the front is 9 digits for the length of the record

@Zanna You may have a look into the pack tutorial.
- A9 is an ascii string of length 9 (that is the '000000011' in the input).
- A* means an ascii string of arbitrary length (until end-of-input).
- When connected via "/" it means: pick the length from A9 and return a string of that many characters.
- The ()* around it just means: repeat until input is fully gobbled up.

HA!

nice :D

5:28 PM
@Rinzwind Almost. Python even has a "p" which means "pascal string" but the number is stored as binary and limited to 255.

aha
well ...I have not got an example here but it probably IS binairy
now for a far more important problem
what to eat this evening

In Perl you would then write (N/A*)* (the N being a 4 byte integer in network order)

@Rinzwind no that's not important enough
what's actually important is
WHERE'S THE RUM GONE?
shot

which has the lowest rating lol

5:33 PM
FO's but that's cuz it is new ;)
only has 8 reviews :

so which has the lowest rating with a LARGE number of reviews lol :P

Q: UBUNTU on Windows 10 public key/alias/server

Troy I just installed the Ubuntu App on my Windows 10 desktop. I'm unfamiliar with Unix, but enrolled in a Python course and doing some hunting around the web. For the course, I use AnyConnect VPN. Instead of logging into the course server using powershell, I installed Ubuntu. I then generated a publ...

Q: mbuffer how does the -T Param work

bpfrhI'm currently trying to make a tar backup to a tape with mbuffer acting as a buffer between e.g: tar --acls -c /var/test | mbuffer -m 8G -P 100% -R 100M | dd of=/dev/nst0 bs=256k But the buffer is still empty about 10-20 times. So I wanted to use a file based buffer with the following command:...
