Q: Can't access internal network but Internet

Mike MaikaeferI have a strange problem with one Ubuntu-system in my network. As well as some other Linux-boxes it is located in an internal network in IP range 192.168.1.x with full access to all other systems in this network and with access to the internet via a separate firewall (IP/Gateway 192.168.1.1). Al...

7:48 AM
@Fabby muru got banned? for what?

@Videonauth I dunno: he never said why and then we just drop it.

@Fabby If you ever get suspended, you will know why you were ;)

i saww him editing today O_o

(Meaning: we don't ask the mods if the user doesn't want to talk about it)
@Videonauth It was 2 weeks ago.

@Fabby oh ok
mhmmm

7:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek If I ever get suspended everyone will know: I have no problems saying I'm an idiot!
(and what I did wrong and why and ...)

@Fabby more that you get a mod message

@JourneymanGeek I hope I get pinged too, because I'm more in chat than on gmail!

alas no

gMail is for sending messages, not actually reading them

This could be a FR ;)

7:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek FR?

you would actually get a notification I think?
feature request

@JourneymanGeek for mod messages, aye

But but
If you're a regular
we try very hard to let you know you're being an idiot.
Politely even

haha :)

@JourneymanGeek :D :D :D
I know: You did a few times already that I was taking my wicked sense of humour a bit OTT.
But I'm talking about:
A mod would
1/ create a private chat room
2/ send me a SE message straight into my SE inbox
before sending an email message, right?
@JourneymanGeek @ArtOfCode

7:59 AM
nope

@Fabby nope

we send a mod message
that gets you a notification on-site and copied to you via email
nothing in chat unless we do it manually, which is rare

:phew:

We can't chat message everyone we suspend

8:00 AM
ok, so no FR needed...
I read my SE inbox more often than my mail (unless I'm looging for a job)

Can you send me a mod message without suspending me?

I have the app for notifications
@Fabby for science?
No ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yup.
@JourneymanGeek Ah...

I don't think even we mods do it ... unless someone did
which some mods do.
for science
A mod message is the Sternly Worded Letter of the SE world
One does not lightly send a Sternly Worded Letter.

8:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek Not even a SWL saying "test"?

ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY SEND Strongly Worded Letters

> "... [in] compliance with PCI DSS requirements, HIPAA guidance and NIST guidelines" - SSLScan of eurobytes.nl - htbridge

Ah! a lot of work!
No worries!!! I know what I need to know already anyway...

Kinda proud of that ^ :D

@blade19899 reading...

8:05 AM
@Fabby Yaay

@blade19899 Woohoo! A+

@Fabby that you arn't suspended?
I COULD HAVE TOLD YOU THAT.

@JourneymanGeek :D :D :D

@Fabby You can get that pretty easily. Its the "... PCI DSS requirements, HIPAA guidance and NIST guidelines..." parts that were somewhat challenging.

@JourneymanGeek Maybe post a FR for a UI to suspend oneself after having passed a test.
>:-) ;-)

8:08 AM
When Ubuntu 18.04 updates to OpenSSL 1.1.1, I'll update the conf to use to TLSv1.3 .

@Fabby actually, I had a user request suspension
I told him I'm not his parents ;p

@blade19899 I know: PCI is the hardest if you do process credit card information Easy if you don't...
@JourneymanGeek :D :D :D
We've kicked @SergiyKolodyazhnyy out of chat a few times because he had to study...

Oh, one of my users - I'll do it
but he's a kid.

PCI compliance is easy: run it through Cloudflare and then match their configuration

(before we knew every chat ban has a non-expiring number in the DB)

8:10 AM
@ArtOfCode ah.
Actually
is a great way to easily configure SSL

Intermediate isn't PCI compliant, though

oh I went with modern
Most of the stuff I run's for personal use anyway

@JourneymanGeek Didn't know you were French! ;-)

@Fabby MY SERVER! SHE IS THE FRENCH!

(French IP address)

8:13 AM
@Fabby I run it on online.net
Its cheaper than local options

My server's in Virginia, but I'm not USian

@JourneymanGeek Oui, oui, your serveur responz to the ubiquitous sudo arrêt -h maintenant command!
@ArtOfCode British, right?

aye

@ArtOfCode AWS? ;p

@ArtOfCode Scottish?

8:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek yup, us-east-1
@Fabby warm, but no

I thought "aye" was more of a Scottish thing, and if I'm warm; it must be Northern Ireland, because Wales would be cold...
Meh, could still be Northern England too.
(No need to say anything!)

I was temporarily bristolian

@Fabby TL;DR: I'm all over the place :P
primarily Welsh/English but you can trace me to Scotland and NI too

Hah! Like me: lived in Belgium most of the time, France, Russia, and now Germany...

@JourneymanGeek that is a cool place :)

8:18 AM
It is

the result of which is that I can do a convincing accent for any of them

Someone told me it was the strangest city in the UK....

I am right now drinking fake coffee out of a large mug with Bristol on it

with a great amount of pride
"fake coffee"
._.

from an awesome workers co-op that took all the unsold china from the collapsed Stoke-on-Trent porcelain companies and decorate it haha

8:19 AM
I approve of the mug.
Not of the fake coffee ;p

@ArtOfCode I can do a nifty "somewhere between Oxford and London" accent as I used to speak proper Queen's English, but have worked with people from around London quite a bit, so they shaved off some of the sharp edges of my BBC English.

also its sad that local industry collapses :(

@JourneymanGeek it's roasted chicory, barley, figs etc... it's not really much like coffee, but some people use it as a coffee substitute

@Zanna eww chicory ._.

Ah. Was just going to ask that.

8:20 AM
I nearly disowned my dad for buying coffee that was mostly chicory

haha it doesn't taste like chicory though

THen my brother bought skimmed milk

shrug

HE HAS BROUGHT DISHONOUR UPON MY FAMILY

caffeine gives me the shakes

8:21 AM
@Zanna Its ok as long as there's no coffee in it

@JourneymanGeek XD

My grandma used to brew a chicory-coffee mix...

@JourneymanGeek has anyone ever inflicted upon you the horrors of the supermarket-brand "1% fat" milk?

@ArtOfCode I think this stuff is something like that

ew

8:22 AM
I threw in some powedered milk so my coffee did not brew in vain
since we actually have decent coffee at the moment

@JourneymanGeek yeah :( lots of manufacturing has died in the UK

@Zanna Singapore has very little but I try to support them

Lots of manufacturing has died everywhere in Europe!

:)

(I do need a new chair at some point ;p)
Waiting for something to fail on this first
and there's a local company that makes very nice gaming oriented chairs
Probably made in china but still ;p

8:24 AM
my milk is very fatty thanks to the almonds/coconuts/hazelnuts/cashews that have been milked to produce it
3
@JourneymanGeek oooh

@Zanna secret labs

I actually don't have a chair of my own... I work at the dining room table which is used for no other purpose, apart from supporting cookbooks I'm working from

My desk is the old dining table
my previous desk was a tabletop I salvaged from an old office + ikea A frames cause the old legs collapsed

it's a 6 person table and it's more than half covered in my cookbooks, Tamil textbooks, notebooks, scrap paper, pens...
@JourneymanGeek :D
I love reusing

We didn't throw out the A frames, we put another table top when... erm
it bowed from the weight?

8:26 AM
lol

@Zanna lol
I was poor

@Fabby It was just a challenge for myself! Don't do anything special on the server, just wanted to challenge myself xD

Didn't have a job, and managed to salvage a PC (and spent a little on getting it running ;) )

nice :)

@Zanna :D :D :D Starred!

8:30 AM
I used to live with a guy who would collect old computers anyone was throwing out
man that place was full of junk :S

@Zanna I love working with hardware ;)
and I really needed a desktop of my own at the time

yeah, lots of fun
even I built some PCs in those days

I've been clearing out a lot

2003/4

oh, that was a very long time ago ;)

8:31 AM
that guy introduced me to Linux

But hasn't changed that much
eh about the same time I was messing with it ;)
amusingly a girl introduced me to linux
wasn't a hardware geek tho

@JourneymanGeek yeah, the technology was in much the same form as now haha

I've been doing computer builds for the last erm...
22 years now? ;p

I generally don't mess around with stuff I might break irreparably, which means I miss a lot of leaning opportunities I guess
the awesome thing about software is you can break it and reinstall haha
I'm pretty clumsy!

oh so am I

8:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek you must be pretty good at it by now :D

naw
only can really do it every 5 years or so
so I mostly relearn everything again
Next build is soon? Waiting on the 9th gen intel chips first

maybe Intel will make a better Linux driver for those chips :/

Well, I'm ok with windows
my current box may go linux ;)

sure, just dreaming

well, intel has always mostly treated linux ok
but I wouldn't throw linux on a gaming box
linux is for actual work ;)
\o/

8:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, I got that impression too, but I think Bristol is a little light Brighton, another place popular with radicals and marginalised folks, especially LGBT*

@Zanna It was also just strange and had a lot of charecter

@JourneymanGeek lol

I was in uni there. So I wouldn't really meet that sort

what is it that gives a place character, I wonder?
@JourneymanGeek haha what? uni is where all the radicals are XD

UWE, did computer security
everyone was pretty boring

8:41 AM
hahaha

The other local uni tho
had a kickass science building

oooo
I only went to Bristol once, but it's one of the very few places in England I would bother to visit again given the chance

The Wills Memorial Building (also known as the Wills Memorial Tower or simply the Wills Tower) is a Neo Gothic building designed by Sir George Oatley and built as a memorial to Henry Overton Wills III by his sons George and Henry Wills. Begun in 1915 and not opened until 1925, it is considered one of the last great Gothic buildings to be built in England.Situated near the top of Park Street on Queens Road in Bristol, United Kingdom, it is a landmark building of the University of Bristol that currently houses the School of Law and the Department of Earth Sciences, as well as the Law and Earth Sciences...

(Wales is awesome though)

also go find the HMV dog ;)
Nipper (1884–1895) was a dog from Bristol, England, who served as the model for a painting by Francis Barraud titled "His Master's Voice". This image was the basis for the dog-and-gramophone trademark, one of the world's most famous that was used by several audio recording and associated company brands, including Berliner Gramophone and its various successors, affiliates, and successors, including Berliner's German subsidiary Deutsche Grammophon; Berliner's American successor the Victor Talking Machine Co. (later known as RCA Victor and then RCA Records); Victor's Bluebird label; Zonophone; Berliner...

8:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek :O
I gotta say that building is pretty hideous

bu nonethless cool as a science building XD

ADMITTEDLY
I am a fan of brutalist architecture but...

hahaha
what I love in the Gothic is not the aesthetic
it's the feeling of the maker
cathedrals like my local, Lincoln

Pearl Bank Apartments (Chinese: 珍珠苑; pinyin: Zhēnzhū yuàn) is a high-rise private residential building on Pearl's Hill in Outram, near the Chinatown of Singapore. As the tallest and densest residential building in Singapore when completed in 1976, Pearl Bank Apartments was one of Singapore's pioneers of high-rise, high-density living, and influenced urban development in Singapore and other cities in southeast Asia. == History == === Development === The Pearl Bank Apartments was the first all-housing project to be undertaken in the Urban Renewal Department of the Housing and Development ...
this is my favourite building ever
and we're losing it :(

8:45 AM
were built by craftspeople who could each bring their own vision and skill to the work
the Gothic is human

@Zanna Indian temples are often still built like that.
Just a different aestetic ;)

in a way neoclassical architecture is absolutely not

@JourneymanGeek yeah! and I like the aesthetics there much more than the Gothic

(to each their own, as far as architecture goes ;) )

8:46 AM
@Fabby tbh I'm considering another suspension for myself lately

Actually an old family friend was a authority in temple layouts

what I value in all made objects is the connection to the maker

(cause there's a lot of science there)
@Zanna and the stories

yes, abosolutely
whether I like the look of it or not is another layer of appreciation

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Don't! Because of this

8:47 AM
So our local temple had a statue that was found under a tree, No one knew who left it there... and after a few hundred years,... well poor chap fell apart

oh no haha
@JourneymanGeek I enjoy that too!

a broken statue was traditionally disposed of (but apparently they hid the reminents) and decided to get a big nicer statue.
They ordered one at a sculpter in india...
and when they went to pick it up... it split...
dude went "You should try this guy in another town"
they walk in, and... guy's got .. a statue already made...

@JourneymanGeek I like the building, from what I can see

so, ya, they got that one in and installed it.

hahaha...

8:49 AM
@Zanna The thing people forget about brutalist architecture is its meant to be functional for people
Its not just designed to look good, but to be used.

@Fabby I know, I know, suspensions add up and stuff. I don't wanna loose the account. Just saying that because I lurk on site too much. Not so much in chat lately.

wait what counts as Brutalist? Who named it? I am not au fait
But I read some of Le Corbusier

And just generally occasional mood issues

people like that were visionaries, they just wanted to make the life of the common people better

8:50 AM
@Zanna brutalist is actually from the french béton brut or bare concrete
problem is a lot of folks confuse that with those crappy buildings that various "communist" authoritarian governments put up

how could they know that super high density housing would destroy community rather than creating it... they didn't know enough about psychology
but the real problem was that the builders were interested in profit, not in the common good
so they used cheap materials like Le Corbusier said (because cheap materials means we can build a house for everyone)
to build poor quality housing

@Zanna It worked in Sweden, but they built a "Utility room" that is common for all flats...

alright I'm off to bed

@JourneymanGeek ahaa

Also: any repair work needed being done is advertised internally first before being handed out externally.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Good night!
Djeez! If you're going to bed now it's what? 04: AM???

8:54 AM
oh
I used to go to a school in those buildings.

So if you're a bit handy, you go drill holes into your neighbour's flat or you're the one cleaning all the stairs, or ...
and the other residents pay you for you doing it.

@Zanna well, you can build high density housing "humanly"
You build up but not out for example

yes

lots of public spaces in the building

oh

8:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's the Swedish way...

The problem is of course

I think the optimum is medium-high density

people see empty space and go
LETS BUILD MORE THINGS!

Or "Let's park our bicycles there!"
AFK BRB

ugh
Bikes!
We currently have a rentabike epidemic

8:56 AM
I find it frustrating that most people don't seem to consider architecture political
same way they don't consider transport political

Well, I don't ;p
Oh transport is very political
How would I put t
the forest (indivudual buildings) are not political.
The trees (urban planning and renewal) is
There's some exceptions of course

@JourneymanGeek bikes? I love bikes...

@Zanna well...
there's a half dozen companies doing 'dockless' bike share services
bikes get abandoned, destroyed, parked illegally in places they should be....

oh right!
that sounds awful

9:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek very cool, looks like Leeds uni

Well the business model relies on the bikes being cheap and disposable
and using the deposit to try to fund operations
but but one company took the deposits (to the tune of 13 million) and ran

D:

Ya
Docked bike sharing is brilliant IMO

@JourneymanGeek Bicycles are like shopping carts:

and you can have "virtual" spaces for parking them (which is something they tried with yellow boxes)
@Fabby funny thing is we have a application for complaining to the authorities...
I report shopping carts

9:06 AM
Everyone takes them at the entrance of the store and abandons them at the end of the parking lot

@Fabby or home

@JourneymanGeek :D :D :D

I've reported... 2 this month?
Complained about illegally parked bikes once
They make it SO easy to snitch ;p

haha that's good
@JourneymanGeek yeah :) big success in London

Q: Removing dns=dnsmasq from NetworkManager.conf not working since upgrading to 18.04

Top CatI'm having an issue in which my /etc/resolv.conf points to localhost.
