Q: Is there a Linux package on Ubuntu that offers a sendmail tool which can forward the message with SMTP or fallback to a file when SMTP fails?

Alexis WilkeI'm wondering whether there is a sendmail tool that would allow me to send emails without all the overhead we see in servers like Postfix. I use Postfix already, so I know how to set it up and all. But what I'm looking for is one simple sendmail command line tool to send emails from one server to...

Q: Connecting to VirtualBox from windows machine host to static IP in guest using Putty

Brandon JI've had a tough time trying to find a solution that specifically deals with accessing a virtualbox Ubuntu server from windows. The objective is to have two adapters set. Adapter 1 is NAT and would be used to provide internet access for the guest machine (the linux server) so that there apt-get...

@ViralParmar Please ask your questions on the main site where more people can see it, so you have a better chance of getting an answer. Also, and more importantly, that way other users can also benefit from the answers you receive. Make sure to post the exact commands you ran and the entire output you got.

Q: How do I clone a VM drive using LVM to a smaller drive?

PaulMI have several VMs set up within Hyper-V using Ubuntu 17.10 and have found that they are not configured correctly - that is, they have been set up using the default block size for the VHDX files and are using much more space than they require and have a higher maximum VHDHX size than I would like...

Hi. I'm looking for a tool to get a server up and running repeatably. E.g. I have a clean LTS ubuntu server, which I want to hav A, B and C packages installed, X and Y users created, SSH keys installed, etc etc etc. Are tools like Ansible/Chef/Puppet what I'm looking for? They look very complicated - I'm looking for something very simple. Is my current approach of a bash script the best solution? Thanks for any help.

11:58 AM
@data I suggest you post a question on the main site. Explain how often you need to do this, whether you will also need to upgrade the Ubuntu version in the future, if this will be the same machine or many different ones, if it is a virtual machine or a physical one. For instance, it might be simpler to just take an image of the hard drive and then copy the image on to the new machines. But all of this is really better done through questions on the main site.
That way, more people can see it and answer it and everyone can benefit from the answers you receive.

@terdon the SE questions usually get downvote to oblivion.

Ask Ubuntu is less "hostile" than Stack Overflow, but also generally a bit less active, so it can take a bit longer until you get a response.
But if you get downvoted on SO, that simply means you asked a bad question that did not meet the site standards. I know those can be confusing and unintuitive for newcomers, but in the end, being able to ask good questions is a valuable skill that also helps you in other parts of life.

@data Not if they're useful. And what @ByteCommander said. SO is often more aggressive with its downvotes. However, the question you describe is completely on topic here, so I don't see why it would be downvoted. But please don't ask on both Unix & Linux and Ask Ubuntu, pick one of the two.

aren't tool recommendations and "opinion based" questions removed?
since "what is the easiest CM tool to get started with" would be opinion based

@terdon: About the thing you deleted, could you perhaps also delete the messages with really personal stuff given after the initial thing? I don't mind so much about that bit, but I would like the rest of the stuff to go. It's all over with anyway, so there's no real need for any more of that to remain there. It's just a privacy concern you know as mods and some other users still have access to it. At least revoke their access, its served its purpose, it need not be there any more. :)

user136984
Preferably just delete all my messages there or at least the ones with personal stuff.

Thanks

sigh
@Seth will try
this SO login stuff has caused a lot of trouble already for me...

technically OpenID is not an SO product

that's true of course
I should never have used this

is this your new account or your old one?

one the other hand, the error message says: "It's not you, it's us. This is our fault." :)
@Seth this is my old one
the new one is really new, like 15 minutes old
I thought they have some automated process, but it seemed to have failed

@SebastianStark hmm. Take a look at this page: askubuntu.com/users/mylogins/804762

yep, the new one isn't listed there

alright. I'm not 100% on this, but I think if you try to add it from there it should trigger an automatic merge.

tried that, it complains about email in use by another account
will contact support
thanks a lot for your help anyway!

No problem! Sorry there isn't more I can do.
