@ThomasWard :D :D :D
I just find everything funny and my boss has told me too to tone down the humour in work situations as welll....
Unfortunately, working hard, means partying hard too in my book, so I can tone down only if I go to sleep now instead of worrying how to make this palet and this community a better place to be...

Youch. I got told at work once "I'm not sure he even knows what is offensive any more"

Writing an HTML form parsing / validating package in Go that is both easy to use and intuitive to use is really tricky.
I think my design strikes a happy medium.
I'll know better when I start using it in my projects.

In the same boat, but with python3 on top of sanic. json.parse. assert requires present. if optional.read throws assign default. pass on to asyncpg.
I know it's naughty to use try/except for flow control, but I do it anyway

1:27 AM
@Fabby sorry if I come off as picky but when writing proposals for anything it is safe to assume any individual reading the proposal will interpret anything written literally as part of the proposal
so not attacking the humor aspect really, but stating that theres a time and a place for it

Hello, all. Can anyone help me get linux on my lenovo 100s?

DoneAnd you folks wonder why Linux/Ubuntu has issues? Enough with a thousand packages nstalls that dont work. We are not all coders or should we be. Done

Did OP just make an account with the name 'done' to just post this?
@Sermo Hey, what are you having problems with?

Q: Can Ubuntu be installed on Intel Atom based laptop or mini PC?

John DunlapI have run into a lot of conflicting information for this laptop, and I want to warn you all about a couple of things before you jump to conclusions. 1) Lenovo has several Laptops sold under "100s" - some with Celeron others with Atom processors. I am referring to the Atom notebooks here. 2) ...

This question should help

3:49 AM
Can anyone just send me a link that'll directly download Debian as an iso file? Downloading linux has been a 5.5 hour mess and it's killing me lol
Never thought downloading an os would make me snappy at my own family lmfao.

For which architecture, amd64?
Also, if you tell me your rough geographic area, I can find a fast mirror for you.

I live in West Virginia, USA. I need a 32 bit version with an efi in it. The reason being is that my Lenovo 100s has a 32 bit bios, uefi only.

@Sermo Do you know the exact model of your 100s?

Lenovo 100s11iBY

The multiarch version should boot on that

3:57 AM
Anyway you can provide me a link or something? I hate being needy, but scouring through the internet for 5.5 hours to find solutions has left me numb lol
I appreciate your help too, btw.

Thanks a bunch, brother. Will that download as a torrent file or iso?

ISO
Disable Secure Boot and keep a usb keyboard handy
Touchpad and keyboard don't work out of the box

Can I get touchpad to work?

Infact I don't think the drivers exist for that

4:04 AM
Would you think it's even wise to download linux onto this?

It's not very well supported from what I can see

Lubuntu apparently works pretty decently

Ah, that's unfortunate. Is there any other linux that would be viable, or do you think I'll run into similar problems? I have been researching all day, and the biggest problem hasn't been getting linux to function once it's loaded, but rather to be able to load it in the first place.

I mean that would depend on your definition of viable xD
If you want to use this as some sort of small home server or something that would work great
Try that question though

I'm thinking that I'll just be forced into using Windows 10. I'm looking at a lot of the solutions, and it's just not worth the hassle, probably. It's absurd to need two different programs, manually do everything, switch folders around, and do a bunch of crazy bios steps to use an os.
I appreciate all of your help though. Just not tech savvy enough from my end

Of course. If you decide to try again when you have more time don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it :)

5:04 AM
Hi Amith! Been a while since I've seen you around :)
Back when you were a yellow smiling sun, I think

@Seth Haha yeah xD

It's been a very long time since the three of us were in the room at the same time :P

Got a little busy

@NathanOsman :D

@NathanOsman That's true

5:10 AM
@AmithKK hehe, life has a way of doing that, doesn't it?

@Seth Sure does

@NathanOsman So I didn't realize that Portal 2 had a coop mode. Definitely picking it up the next time it goes on sale.

Mostly because I had moved back to windows as my primary driver
@Seth Oh, and it's really fun

I'm not terribly big into singleplayer games but multiplayer (especially coop) is great.
@AmithKK So I've heard :D
Now I just need to find someone else who hasn't played it to go through the puzzles with me.

But so much of portal lore seems to be under-used

5:14 AM
In Portal 2?

Yes

Ah.

Probably would be great if they make a Portal:Origins story with the creation of GlaDOS and how chell is related to caroline, and maybe a side story with doug rattmann

That's a bummer. They had some great lore going on with the first. And I haven't even played it lol
@AmithKK people tend to hate on prequels though

@AmithKK didn't you read the comic?
It explains nearly everything.

5:15 AM
@NathanOsman It does
But I don't think a huge chunk of the community did xD
Anyhow, a new portal game is long overdue

Definitely.

HL 3 confirmed?

No.
That's essentially impossible now.

Never sadly

I have no idea how to use that meme properly.
That hardest part about finding good coop games is getting your friends to play.

5:27 AM
Yeah.
I started getting into Fortnite.
But I've been so busy I just haven't had time to play.

Oh?
I would try it, but first person shooters like that make me uncomfortable.
One thing that would be really fun is Star Trek Bridge Commander
Sorry, Bridge Crew* not Bridge Commander

It's too bad ShootMania never took off. You would have liked that game - despite the name, it's basically laser tag.

Looks interesting

It's still around but the multiplayer servers are basically empty.
So you'd need 4-6 of your friends to play.

Q: Preformatted text scrolling - bug of feauture?

N0rbertAskUbuntu help recommend to style pre-formatted text and console output with #four spaces But sometimes it results in scrolling text. See this question as an example. @DavidFoerster Asked accepted answer's user to review...
@ThomasWard I'm not complaining... Thanks for the tip.
Back at the time when I wrote manuals they were full of double meanings.

1:22 PM
Please tell me this is fake. No developer is this stupid

@Videonauth starred!
Some devs take the usability so far that their algorithms defeat security instead of making things more secure.

Happily i do not know the wepage this is coming from, otherwise i would have much to much fun lol

@Fabby I'm pretty sure I've seen this a joke on /r/softwaregore or /r/programmerhumor. :-D

:-) Ah! :-)
@DavidFoerster You're better than Google: you just know the Internet by heart...
;-) :D ;-)

@Fabby Nah, I just browse Reddit almost daily during my breaks.

I've never browsed reddit: only gone there when someone posted a link to it.

Speaking of reddit

rip

1:52 PM
@Fabby: /r/ProgrammerHumor has an ongoing "contest" for the creation of terrible data input widgets. This is a nice summary of one category:
The other popular category is volume control:

@DavidFoerster :D :D :D

@ByteCommander Done. askubuntu.com/q/1056335/504066 Hope it isn't a dupe, but I found none.

@DavidFoerster ROTFL
@PerlDuck +1 Cool! How did you do that?

@Fabby Did what?

(My backup isk is still NTFS as I use my private backup disk for work as well)
@PerlDuck Have en encrypted external HDD that auto-asks for password when plugging in.

1:59 PM
Plinko volume control:

Oh no! All of Germany is in the Chat room! ;-) :-) ;-)
@DavidFoerster :D

@Fabby No idea. Formatted it with encrypted ext4 from the disks app and that was it. Whenever I plug it in, a GUI prompts me for the passphrase.

@PerlDuck Cool! Thanks!

2:22 PM
@ThomasWard Totally revamped and added a bit more logic to the crazy idea.

Q: Be nice: How to optimise interaction between Trolls and Unicorns

FabbyNow we have a single type of reputation on the system that is only based on knowledge. I've been thinking of a system where we add an additional kind of rep that is based on a user's "niceness" where everyone starts at 0 where: Past behaviour does not count Any behaviour on the site will have ...

@DavidFoerster Enforcing a single child (See: China)
Heyyy also isn't this from /r/ProgrammerHumor

@AmithKK yes

oo nice xD
This hits closer to home though xD

3:46 PM
What do you call a KKK member who breaks into computer networks for personal gain?
A Black Hat.

@DavidFoerster wat

@TheWanderer Do you know what the Ku-Klux-Klan and Black Hat hackers are?

yes
that joke just doesn't make much sense

Do you agree that a KKK member probably wouldn't like to be called black or black hat.

yeah

3:59 PM
Then the joke should make sense (regardless of how you funny you find it).
(Admittedly it was more fun for me to come up with it than how funny I think the joke is.)

@DavidFoerster >:-)

@DavidFoerster OK, it does make sense, but it just isn't funny :p

4:16 PM
@AmithKK The comments on the Reddit thread are gold too: "Hey, my webcam actually work in Linux." – "Can confirm, your webcam works."

@TheWanderer I think it's funny, but then I thought it funny that everyone was bringing flowers to my Granny's funeral....
... whereas she told everyone for her entire life: "Never bring any flowers to my grave! Bring'em now!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

throws salt at @Fabby for no apparent reason

:D :D :D
@ThomasWard Yvette Colomb is having a look at the Trolls&Unicorns question now. ShadowWizard will have a look after the kids are off to bed...

glad to see you didn't take the criticisms - constructive or otherwise - as direct attacks. ANd yes I do have the security mindset - it's ingrained in me because of IT Security :P
just to make sure, I hope you don't interpret my criticisms as direct attacks against the idea. i'm just pointing out potential flaws / issues is all

@ThomasWard :D I know, and don't forget: I'm too old to be insulted...

4:26 PM
heh

evening

I've given up on seeing problems: I'm focusing on solutions nowadays...
Guten Abend!

@Fabby indeed. Someone though has to poke at and reveal all the potential holes though :p
if it's not me it's others

Rather you than when I post it on meta.se where I'd be voted into the stone age.

@ThomasWard hehe it's funny how quickly that outlook on everything becomes ingrained.

4:32 PM
With Thomas I'm suspecting it was genetic encoding...
>:-) ;-) >:-)

@Seth true statement. 'course when you work in IT Security it pays to be "one step ahead" on the paranoia scale :P
it's why I have at least 50 mailing lists for security related things flowing into my email daily

@ThomasWard pays in everything but your relationships xD

shrugs
that's its own can of worms that I keep sealed up in a bunker close to the center of the earth, though, it's got its own set of chaos and rules related to it :p

@ThomasWard this describes it so well

oddly enough that level of paranoia and protectiveness has helped me keep a few very close friends who have in the past made 'bad decisions' and who are less-attuned to whether people are creeps or not
so i have at least a few friends who appreciate that part of me :P

4:36 PM
@ThomasWard The question is: Are they female friends?
;-)

The proper response to that is "What difference does it make" :P

:D None of my business indeed :D

@Fabby some are, some aren't, I just have a highly attuned radar for whether someone is problematic or not which helps in those types of situations

Impressed.

"Treat non-professional interactions with new people with a certain level of caution, as you determine more and more about the person in question that level of caution can give way to either lesser or more levels of caution depending on what you determine of that person's personality or interests." <-- basically how i handle non-professional interactions
being cautious is never wrong ;P

4:46 PM
also how I handle professional interactions

guess it depends on the field. I'm never at the client side of professional interactions in my workplace, I always work within the workplace because I'm not required to have interaction with external partners on a regular basis :P

How I handle any new interactions:
Play clown and when someone misinterprets something, blame it on SOHF.
only then tone down.
:-)

heh

lol

The boss doesn't like my "Elephant in the china shop" approach.
But it works wonders for me and I find out things loooong before he does!
Kitchen duty calls. AFK for 20 mins.

5:19 PM
@DavidFoerster Yea

5:40 PM
Apparently in the U.S. it's cheaper to hire the same amount of college-level teachers directly to teach you one on one than to actually go to college.
