Hi
I have a remote ssh session to a machine at home, but apparently the username I am using to login isn't correct. I guess that I am making a spelling error or made a splling error when I added the new user on my remote machine
what options do I have to be able to connect?
I can see the connection is established though

@LandonZeKepitelOfGreytBritn you use password login for ssh? You should read into using RSA key pairs for that. And are you sure you gave the password right? (make sure you not have by accident caps-lock enabled and typed it right)

@Videonauth it doesn t ask for a password
Long story short
I have a remote ssh session to my macbook at home, but apparently the username I am using to login isn't correct. I guess that I am making a spelling error or made a splling error when I added the new user on my remote machine
what options do I have to be able to connect?
I can see the connection is established though:
$lsof -i -n

COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
sshd 4700 root 3u IPv4 189410 0t0 TCP myIP->remoteIP:22398 (established)
same result when I specify the port explicitely as follows:
sudo ssh -p 22398 username@remoteIP

when sudo ssh times out it points IMo far more onto firewall settings

@Videonauth sorry for the useless copy paste :/
@Videonauth well, when I am on my home network I can ssh into my machine without any issues
but not when I am on another network like now
I disabled my macbook's firewall to be sure I would be able to connect
but still

yes thats normal, most routers need to be set up for forwarding the ports to the proper IP
so youre not at home right now
?

12:30 AM
@Videonauth correct

maybe your router is not setup for it?

@Videonauth I thought setting up a remote ssh would solve this issue
it already creates a "tunnel"
*reverse ssh
not remote ssh

sometimes even service providers block usual ports
mhmm i never use ssh outside my home so im a bit lost here, but it can normally only be a few things if it works when your at home

@Videonauth isn't the whole point of a reverse ssh to circumvent all that jazz?

normally yes but like i said im not firm with that

12:32 AM
hmm
thx :)

12:44 AM
@Videonauth I really don't understand what s going on the ip address I see is changing every 5 minutes
and now when doing usernam@ipadress I get
Permission denied (publickey)
everything changes all the time

sounds weird
sounds weird enough that you should call someone at home and ask the ssh host to be taken offline
that does not sound right, IP adresses are not changing all the time, and proxys do neither
and if you have set up key access properly it should not decline with pub key permission error

hey is it possible to install another package manager? - ie I wish to make apt-get work on alpine linux.

1:49 AM
I'ld ask the Suse guys. They deal with crazy crossbuilds and package interpretation. I don't see apt-get working in that environment, but it may or may not be "easily possible". I say easily possible, because anything is technically possible - it's just not always a good idea.

Well the other option is to make something that detects the linux distro and then downloads the correct install script. Wget is part of posix standard and thus part of "every" distribution right? (I realizee this might be offtopic on this se site, probably should go to linux.se)

No, it's fine. I only recommended the Suse guys, because they are THE cross-platform packaging masters. I did do a cli bash thing at one point to install random tools I needed compiled from source wherever I needed them. Wanting apt-get in a foreign platform though means you'ld have to inform it what was present first. So, may or may not be a good idea.

Well it's for a docker install "post setup" and i wish to streamline that between dockers & manual ubuntu server virtual machines. (streamline as in I can just start the docker/vm, run the deploy script inside this docker/vm and then have it do everything automatically, like installing git, downloading the release branch, building & cleaning up unneeded tools).
On ubuntu I'd have to go apt-get install X, while on alpine it's apk add install X .. That's currently literary the only difference in deployment.

I don't use Alpine and you're being unclear, so I'm done talking. Tried to be helpful, but you left out key details (like docker usage) and if Alpine is the host, guest, both or if a Debian derived distro is the host, guest, or both. Not having used Alpine and not having significant clarity on the problem - I can't speak to it futher.

Q: File upload limitations to Ubuntu 16.04, PHP, Apache2 server from Windows machine

ApricotI have built a web application using PHP with MySQL running on Apache2. The application has file upload option that allows user to upload 1000's of images in one go. PhilippI have an HP Envy 15 j179ez running Windows 8.1. Some days ago, I installed Ubuntu 16.04 alongside Windows and it's actually running very well. Q: Screenshot without PrintScreen button in Linux

Kutalmis BercinThe PrintScreen button on the keyboard of my workstation is malfunctioning. I wonder, if possible, one of the following is: Is there any default keyboard short-cut that can be used to screenshot for Linux Ubuntu operating systems? Is there any command to perform this via terminal?

Q: Purpose of ask ubuntu?

Ahmed HusseinI want to ask a question. What is the purpose of this nice community. I'm wondering is it for ubuntu only, or I can ask on redhat?

Can askubuntu.com/q/1018953/367990 be moved to meta again or get deleted, please (@mods)?
Looks to me like OP deleted the question after it got migrated to meta, which rejected the migration and restored it on the main site...

When a question is migrated, it is closed and locked but not actually deleted. That question is still closed, but no longer locked, because the OP deleted it on meta. I don't think it's necessary for a moderator to delete it; it will be deleted eventually by the community, or even automatically deleted.
On the other hand, if it were undeleted and unlocked on meta, then it could be answered. I think Serg's comment would make an excellent answer, and I don't think it's really a duplicate of that meta question (which was suggested), because that meta question is ambiguous and seems more to be about posts regarding things that aren't specific to Ubuntu.

Q: Purpose of protecting a closed question?

WinEunuuchs2UnixI just voted to reopen this question: EXT4-fs error after Ubuntu 17.04 upgrade. Then I noticed there was an option to protect it. Why would I want to protect a closed question when I'm the first person to vote to reopen it?
