@MathCubes yes

so
system time
is the first thousand a second?

@Seth
None of the extensions that I used works. And they lower how powerful they could be. You can't get an extension like Tab Groups any more or an stylish speed dial anymore. But wroste of all you can't even get things like the Arc theme or Htitle to work or to patch it to work.

12:54 AM
btw thanks again @Set
* @Seth, building from source and installing fish manually resolved my problem

1:06 AM
@rien333 Awesome! Glad you got it working.

@TheWanderer I don't know, but it seems sketchy. It uses the Stack Exchange logo in a way that seems to be trying to imply that it is associated with the Stack Exchange network in some way, but it doesn't seem to be. The email address looks like a SE email address. The domain name is registered through a privacy protection service, so it is not easy to find out who has actually registered it. It appears to use guzelhosting.com as its hosting provider.
Both stackoverflowtr.com and www.stackoverflowtr.com resolve to 89.252.186.3, which is on the same network as the IP address in the error message. (That is, it's not actually showing us our IP addresses.) I could think of some possible--if farfetched--innocuous explanations, such as it being a licensed SE 1.0 site that is currently suffering downtime and also a bug that causes wrong error messages to be reported.
But if no one has asked any SE employees about it, I think it's best someone does. Do you want to post on Meta Stack Exchange about it? Or Meta Stack Overflow would probably be fine, too, since the site mimics Stack Overflow specifically.
The site might be a proxy to help people access Stack Overflow who otherwise might have trouble doing so through their Internet connections. (It may be that it is proxying back to us the error page that Stack Overflow actually shows it, when it tries to access it.) If so, that goal seems completely legitimate to me. But I think it's still best that it be looked into.

Any thoughts on how I figure out what gets activated when I press the dim/bright keys, and how I can modify/tweak the behavior? (Using Lubuntu.)

5:32 AM
I found this in ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml
<keybind key="C-F10">
  <action name="Execute">
    <command>xbacklight -dec 10</command>
  </action>
</keybind>
<keybind key="C-F11">
  <action name="Execute">
    <command>xbacklight -inc 10</command>
  </action>
</keybind>
But the keybindings are not the same as the media keys on my laptop's keyboard.
They do seem to work similarly, but not precisely the same. When I use the media keys, I can press dim 10 times and the tenth keypress is significantly dimmer, but still viewable. Using the above keybinding (C-F10) the screen is still significantly bright on the 9th keypress but the 10th blacks it out completely.
So that tells me that they are not the same, and that tweaking this file will not help me.
(the media key giving me a very dim but readable screen is probably a lucky rounding error)

5:55 AM
I found ~/.config/lxsession/Lubuntu/desktop.conf
nothing directly relevant there though...

6:27 AM
in /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/:
$ grep [0-9] *
actual_brightness:8
bl_power:0
brightness:8
grep: device: Is a directory
max_brightness:852
tweaking the brightness file changes the screen brightness

7:00 AM
@Seth Planning on taking Technician ham test sometime this month.
We'll see how it goes.

7:37 AM
The XFCE Power Manager (accessed in the GUI panel) has a checkbox that says "Handle display brightness keys" - so I presume this is the thing I'm trying to tweak?
Maybe solved here: bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12062 - I need sleep, can't deal with this anymore tonight...

@AaronHall Did you already search askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/brightness?

@dessert I've been googling all night

@AaronHall Thinkpad is special some times, I recommend thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_get_special_keys_to_work
xmodmap and thinkpad-acpi are the keywords you should look into – after having a good night :)

The keys "work" but the functionality is braindead - see the bug report I last linked to. Now I've got to figure out if I can use the "fixed" version...
might have to compile it myself?

How about you just remap the media keys with xmodmap?

7:50 AM
It's more fun to do it the right way.

8:08 AM
I see :)

Q: ubuntu GNOME 16.04 installation : partition allocation

HyeongGyu Froilan ChoiI've installed ubuntu GNOME 16.04 alongside Windows 10. My Windows 10 was installed in a 250GB SSD, and I allocated 40GB for ubuntu. But after I checked my partition allocation state, I found out that two more partitions were created--instead of one. One being about 16GB and the other being about...

Well experienced with unattended-upgrades? Please share of your experience with us: askubuntu.com/questions/993470/…

@Arcticooling Do you have the full output of apt-get update -y && apt-get upgrade -y? It seems to me that whether or not the packages it installed had already been downloaded, and possibly some other information that would reveal, may be relevant.

Sadly I no longer have it... This particular VPS has since been deleted but I remember clearly sitting here surprised asking myself on the behavior I've witnessed, it really was very verbose and long (1-2 minutes of updating and upgrading in comparison to 4 seconds at most in frequent manual upgrades, in most cases...
@EliahKagan

Can you produce similar behavior on a system where you can examine it and try things out? If it cannot be reproduced, then it will probably only be answerable if it turns out to be the expected behavior or an extremely common problem.

I didn't understand the last sentence you wrote dear Eliah, but anyway sadly I cannot reproduce only because there passed a few months between installing and configuring exactly as I've demonstrated in the question, to execution (as I recall).

hello people

@UbdusSamad hi!

I have some question related to path , can someone help?
hey there!

I suppose you mean the PATH variable?

@Arcticooling I just meant, if the problem is specific to anything that was happening on that system that you no longer have, then your question probably cannot be answered. In contrast, if it's a common problem, or if unattended upgrades are actually intended to behave in the way you observed, then it might still be answerable. Since then, an answer has been posted that might shed some light on things--by default, you just get security updates--but you don't have the log file it refers to, do you?

i want write a path for config file that automatically detects your username and and then refers to /home/.myprogram
in layman terms , i have to write a path variable to home/.myprogram , that wroks in every system given that .myprogram folder exists

1:00 PM
@UbdusSamad Usually the best way to do that is to either write:
~/.myprogram

Do you mean /home/USERNAME/.myprogram?

Or:
"$HOME/.myprogram"

yes , that's excatly what i needed thanks

you can test whether the directory exists with

alright

1:01 PM
if [ -d ~/.myprogram ]; then …; fi
or
[ -d ~/.myprogram ] && …

@dessert Why would .myprogram be a directory?
Ah, because Ubdus said so.
Fair enough.

;)

Thanks Again people!
:)

you're welcome!

can i install a package in ubntu through some python code?

Q: Execute shell commands in Python

iZodiacI'm currently studying penetration testing and Python programming. I just want to know how I would go about executing a Linux command in Python. The commands I want to execute are: echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --destination-port 80 -j REDIRECT --to-...

if necessary, use gksudo or kdesudo respectively to ask for the password.

@UbdusSamad If you package your program, then the package can declare the dependency. Even if there is no repository that provides your program, and users have to install the .deb file themselves, they can still do so in a way that will automatically install its dependencies. In particular, after obtaining the .deb file, they can run:
sudo gdebi your-program.deb

i though of packing it but it's too complicate , i didn't understand much of it
i have a single python file and one dependency

Well, at the opposite end of the spectrum of complexity, you could just tell users what they need to install, in the program's README file. Then you don't have to have the program perform the installation itself.

guys, anyone here has some experience with Github pages?
I was wondering if I can use AJAX with it
and I'll be obligated to build the site with Jekyll right? Or can I use just pure HTML/CSS/JS?

Hey people
The path field is given the input : ~/.subseeker/subseeker.py , but it's not working , the code isn't executing
how do i refer to home folder (without knowing the username) for this field
When i use the full path to the .py file , it works but i don't want to supply full path.
Can anyone help?
Ignore the label field , it's just there for nothing

@UbdusSamad Please ask on the site. And explain what the dialog you're showing is. How can we know what the right syntax will be if you don't tell us what that is?

It's Nautlius Action Config Tool

@UbdusSamad Add that as detail when you ask on main.

4:30 PM
@UbdusSamad Anyway, if ~/ doesn't work, try $HOME/. The ~ only works in the shell, I don't think nautilus will launch a shell (bash/dash shell, that is) for this, so ~ won't work there.

yeah, I think you need absolute paths there
at least the actions I've here all use abs paths

Noluck with $HOME/. as well.

try /home/username/...

4:48 PM
not working either

@UbdusSamad Ask a question on the site. Explain exactly what you are trying to do and exactly how it fails (don't say "not working", explain howit is not working). Also, if you're doing this in nautilus, open a nautilus window by running nautilus in a terminal so you can see any error messages, and include them in your question.

I am opening natilus in terminal already , i've sked the question already

Any errors in the terminal? How does it fail? Does nautilus crash? Does the program simply not run?

5:07 PM
NO , actually the python file dosen't even executes , (when i provide absolute path , then it's prints stuuf and things)

@UbdusSamad So nothing happens? Is that how it fails? No errors in the terminal?

Nekrogoblikon is an American melodic death metal band based in Los Angeles, California. The group was formed in 2006, by Tim Lyakhovetskiy and Nicky Calonne. The band has released three full-length albums, Goblin Island, Stench and Heavy Meta and one EP, Power. The band's music centers around goblins. == Formation and Goblin Island (2006–2010) == Nekrogoblikon was formed in 2006 by Tim Lyakhovetskiy and Nicky Calonne in Palo Alto, California. @terdon Basically YouTube has a tone of "AI" in place now to detect things that are not "advertiser friendly", but it barely works. Almost every creator I follow now says essentially every video they upload gets automatically demonetized very quickly, then they get their initial view spike, then days later YouTube will manually review it and say the automated systems messed up. But they let people that pull in tons of views do just about whatever they want.
Latest example is this Logan Paul kid (who is a big jerk to begin with) goes to Japan, hugly disrespects their culture, then goes to the "suicide forest", passes all the barriers, finds a dead body, films it, laughs and makes jokes. YouTube manually approves it for the trending page. With a picture of a (slightly blurred) dead body hanging from a tree in the thumbnail. Oh and YouTube also exempts the big name TV shows on YouTube from their advertising policy.
Things like the Tonight Show now get two ads before their videos when youtubers get instantly demonetized.
