We aren't paid to answer your questions, you know. And it's only been 3 days.... — TheWanderer 16 secs ago
Don't feed them.
I talk to you, don't I?
no, you don't.
the question is pretty bad
01:03
you're pretty bad
🤔
What's the deal with /proc/scsi/<device name>? I have a RAID manager that apparently interfaces with my RAID card via this interface, but it doesn't appear to... exist... anymore.
the RAID device exists, I can mount the drives. But the management interface won't start because that special path doesn't exist

Alright. Time to find out how well reading code on my phone works.
Debugging in my head FTW.
woot
you know there is actually an APKTool for Android
@TheWanderer Sorry, which part of MainActivity was using RequestFactory again?
@Seth SpaceX has a launch tomorrow, right?
Gotta find those cookies :P
    AccountManagerCallback<Bundle> accountManagerCallback = new AccountManagerCallback<Bundle>()
    {
        @Override
        public void run(AccountManagerFuture<Bundle> accountManagerFuture)
        {
            Log.e("AUtH", "AAA");
            String authToken = "";
            try
            {
                authToken = accountManagerFuture.getResult().getString(AccountManager.KEY_AUTHTOKEN);
                Log.e("Auth", authToken);
            }
            catch (Exception e)
            {
if that callback isn't called, RequestFactory is just constructed normally
02:36
Okay
Seems correct. Hmm...
And authToken is empty or it throws an exception?
no authToken has stuff in it
it's just that it's not everything SE needs to authenticate
it has prov, anon, and usr
but SE wants prov, acct and maybe sechatusr
02:51
Ah.
So the factory seems to be losing cookies.
Okay, that really narrows it down.
yeah
or it just isn't getting them for some reason
I'll be home later this evening and I can step through the auth process.
OK sounds good
report any findings in HTYD so I can find then when I wake up
I have a hunch but I'm not 100% sure where they are getting lost.

@NathanOsman you really shouldn't let @GeorgeTheDev drink:

Okay, this is pretty impressive:

@NathanOsman Rip, Chat Exchange just crashed the JVM
@NathanOsman You should check out the Unigine Superposition benchmark. It;s impressive. The first few scenes could almost pass as real video
You can watch it in 8k @ 60fps on YouTube
(A GTX1080 can barely run it at 60 on low IIRC)
03:43
@AndroidDev I think I remember seeing that one.
@NathanOsman So uhm that JVM crash was not a fluke. I can repeatedly repro it. This is not good. Another user in an SO chatroom is trying to help me debug
04:03
hooray!
Cable is back!
@AndroidDev whoa... a vulnerability maybe?
Hue
@NathanOsman well Zach and I are going to bed. We can talk about if more tomorrow
04:59
alright. best-practices question here.
i have a backup drive. i need somewhere to mount it.
where should i mount it (persistent location)?
i was thinking /media/backup, but...

@JourneymanGeek thanks, maybe I should comment on one of his reviews or something

you can't really comment in a review either

Hi All.
I can't make my ubuntu to fetch docker image through terminal. Since my network is behind the proxy, I have tried all the steps given here stackoverflow.com/a/28093517 .
But it shows

Skype for Linux v4.* (legacy) was discontinued by Microsoft removed from Canonical's partner repositories. What should be do with old Skype installation questions and/or answers that refer to it?
@DavidFoerster is there a newer skype available?
My first idea is to add notes to the (popular) answers about their obsolescence and close the questions as duplicates of a "canonical" question about the installation of the new Skype vor Linux v5.
@fossfreedom Yes, albeit in "Beta" state.
generally we try not to close questions - most of the time with a bit of gentle editing they have been saved and a new answer added to make the question still relevant.
09:04
I wrote such an answer.
askubuntu.com/a/886711/175814 is pretty simple and up to date too.
14 messages moved to Trash
09:38
@DavidFoerster I'm not sure I am a big fan of what you are trying to do here: askubuntu.com/questions/7498/how-do-i-install-skype
It looks like a mess
You could just comment on each answer, not?
@fossfreedom opinion?
@terdon opinion?
I don't mind the notice, that's probably useful. I did remove the strikethrough though. That seems excessive.
That will work. Or editing - for example first line for 'install from repo answers' to say something like "Skype has been removed from the repositories and has not been replaced. This answer will no longer work for supported versions of Ubuntu. This answer is of historical significance only" ... or something less convoluted that that.
I'll wait for some other opinions in case they go into a completely different direction.
sure that's fine
I see you've used strikethrough in almost all answers..;
good work on updating the question, @DavidFoerster, maybe also include a reference to web.skype.com in your answer?
09:47
@don.joey Woah! Yeah, @DavidFoerster please undo that. That just makes everything hard to read and crossing out all answers except your own doesn't look very good.
@don.joey I think that's worth a second answer. You're welcome to get your hands dirty. I'll vote for it if it's any decent.
Oh wow. I hadn't seen that you added the notice to all answers! Why? Just add it to the top one.
@terdon I considered that but decided on a broader approach. Both are fine with me.
Remember that while we may have this silly strange rule about older versions not being supported here, that doesn't mean that nobody will ever again find an answer for an older version useful.
@DavidFoerster The broader approach i) makes everything really hard to read and ii) looks like you just want to get everyone to upvote your answer.
I know that ii) isn't true, of course, but it does look like it.
and many people will simply use the retired, unsupported version: "Important notice: All Skype for Linux clients version 4.3 and older will be retired on July 1, 2017. To keep chatting, please install the latest version of Skype for Linux."
09:49
Yep.
The new one doesn't support all features yet anyway.
Hello :)
Independently of whether the old Skype still works, most of the installation methods don't.
@karel: Thanks for the bounty! Not just on behalf of myself but whoever ends up receiving it. It's certainly a good idea to encourage up-to-date answers.
My intention was exactly that, to encourage up-to-date answers, and to help users to find an up-to-date answer to a popular question, like Zanna recently did by awarding a bounty to an answer top this question: True Ubuntu on Chromebook ARM
@DavidFoerster I've upvoted your answer ! Hi David ! :)
@karel How can we move the answer from @DavidFoerster to the top ? Any idea @terdon ?
@cl-netbox: More votes or get OP to accept the answer (too bad he's no registered user).
10:00
@DavidFoerster I think a mod should manipulate the order and move it to the top - it is the only valid answer as of now ... can you please do it @terdon ? :)
@cl-netbox What David said.
@cl-netbox No. Mods can't do anything like that.
Can we turn the question into a Wiki question since OP isn't registered?
@terdon okay ... Hi terdon ! :)
o/
@DavidFoerster We could but I don't see much point. We don't need to edit the question and that won't make it possible to accept an answer.
I did something similar on How to install Skype 4.3?
10:22
Germany requires mobile phone providers to record the ID of all people to whom they issue SIM cards.
The rationale is that security services can't track terrorists otherwise.
I think that's an EU law, actually, not German-specific.
Well, assuming you believe there's a difference :P
Oh wait… all previous terrorists left heaps of other traces and were known to the agencies and/or the police but they didn't follow up on it because ???
Also, they need total internet surveillance to trace terrorists. Except that… see above.
Deep State FTW!
@terdon It's a German law enacting a EU directive.
Yeah, it's EU-wide, I think
@DavidFoerster Well, it's nice to know that some things never change.
10:49
rip
TIL Rob Schneide thinks that mandated vaccination violates the Nuremberg Laws. WTF.
11:28
@DavidFoerster Oh man. Those people are bloody dangerous.
@terdon Yeah, we need to stop these Zionist scumbags! Heil… oh wait, you meant Rob Schneider, not the target of the Nuremberg Laws.
Um.
Should I add sarcasm tags?
Sheesh, I hadn't even noticed he referred to the Nuremberg laws and not the code.
Sorry. I just like to play switch-a-roo.
11:35
coughs
careful with words some are evil and you don't want the evil unleashed :P
@ThomasWard: Hence leaving out the "evil" name and stopping with a commonly known but on its own neutral word.

I need a mod
-1 awful answer. I wasted time reading this "answer" and still don't have the answer to the actual question. I can't tell if you're a GRUB fanatic or just plain ignorant, but there are lots of ways to boot a system, and not all of them involve GRUB, and on a multiboot system certainly not all of them require the same OS's GRUB when they can all detect and boot each other. Answers like this are what make StackExchange suck way more than it needs to. — Mehrdad 5 mins ago
@TheWanderer hmm... i'll do some cleanup
ignore - move on - dont respond please
too late
wait where'd Thomas go? o_O
2
@fossfreedom you didn't need to remove all the comments o_O
... wiping then undeleting relevant stuff
@TheWanderer nothing worth saving in the comments
12:15
really? I thought the stuff about GRUB not being strictly necessary was helpful
you alluded that in your answer -remember anything useful should be in the answer anyway
alright
although people are probably going to be confused lol
I'd agree. But you could avoid getting bashed about that by just removing the opening sentence of your answer which states you can't do it. Yes, you explain that you can't do it with the OP's setup and yes, you explain that there are alternative. But I expect many poeple will only read the first sentence and then hit you with a trout.
"as the comments say" "what comments?" :p
If I were you, I'd remove that.
12:17
ok
@terdon well there wasn't much bashing going on; just this person today with some pent up rage
hmm I need to make 1k
ahh I see
@TheWanderer Yeah. I edited a bit more, by the way. Just to remove the "edit" and extra stuff referring to the comment.
yeah I saw; thought it was Mehrdad coming back with another comment lol
I hope that's OK.
@terdon idc
Woohoo, I'm a necromancer because of the Skype installation answer.

@TheWanderer: They both look fine. The referred software is commercial but distributed for Linux.
@DavidFoerster yeah. I didn't flag any, since I think they're genuine, but the user only had four posts, and they all advertise the software
I just wanted to run git show. However I often forget to prefix Git commands with git and just started typing show. Apparently I remembered to type git first mid-word and ended up with shit show. xD

Brütal Legend is on sale on Humble Bundle (DRM free) and Steam, if anybody's looking for a well made Linux-friendly Action RPG game (made by a co-author of "Monkey Island") for the summer.

so @NathanOsman did you solve the case of the lost cookies?
13:16
wait wat
why is WSL still 14.04?
Ubuntu on Windows
ooh exactly 13,900 rep
Meh I like 14 better myself
pretty sure it's supposed to be the latest LTS though
@TheWanderer Yeah I have exactly 8,400... That doesn't mean that I have to go back to using my PNY GeForce 8400GS PCI graphics card, does it? :D
13:19
yes
But then I can't watch 60fps on YouTube!
Nuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
>_>
oh go fix some bugs
:p
And more importantly I can't run hardware accelerated Android emulators for debugging @TheWanderer
oh well
ahhh
16.04 is out for WSL
I just wasn't updated :D
hue
Seriously though, an 8400GS has got to be worse than Intel's HD graphics
13:22
well it's old
I would upgrade my GTX650, but the Nvidia drivers for Linux are so bad that I don't think I would really gain anything. (For example, dragging a terminal over a YouTube video causing stuttering not just in the video but also in the window movements, and the audio stutters too. I can do the same thing on Windows without a hiccup)
X needs to die
Wayland is the way forward
The year of the Linux desktop will not happen without Wayland
Sniff. I wish they'd make something like xrandr for wayland though.
I'll never switch until I can haz xrandr if I can possibly help it.
Wayland is soo much better. I tried the latest Fedora that uses it and.... Oh my gosh
I was playing a 1080p 60fps YouTube video with the open source drivers!
Mind == blown
@terdon I worked in a Wayland session for some weeks to test everything extensively ... not bad ... though there is still some work to do ... I switched back to X for convenience reasons for now. :)
@AndroidDev I agree ... though running VLC in full screen mode leads to a frozen system after some time when you hover the mouse inside the app. :)
Yeah, I tried it out with KDE for a while but I use xrandr to set up some keyboard shortcuts to switch between different screen layouts. If I can't have that, I can't use the system so I went back to X.
13:38
@terdon also, when you want to run a GUI application with elevated privileges you have to execute xhost +local: before (once in every Wayland session you start)
wait I can use Wayland on Ubuntu?
TELL ME THE SECRETS
@cl-netbox Well yes. That's been the case for many years. it's only recently that the default X setup allows this.
@TheWanderer Dunno. Probably, but I don't use Ubuntu. Neither does CL, I think.
gasp
are you Fedoras?
We use distributions for grown ups. >:)
13:40
I like me Ubuntu
I'm on Arch, he's on Fedora.
Mostly.
maybe I should try Fedora
@terdon was not a blocker for me ... don't run GUI apps as root ... just wanted to mention it :)
I tried to install it on my laptop, but I couldn't even get past the drive setup
You know that's the reason Torvalds doesn't use Debian right? "Too hard to install"
Lol
Obviously he hasn't tried Ubuntu recently
13:41
Not anymore. The Debian installer is a breeze these days.
@TheWanderer what ? :D
is Debian... Breezy? @terdon
@cl-netbox I don't know. It just wouldn't let me install
#badpunz
@TheWanderer you can prepare everything in anaconda installer ... it only looks different :)
Yeah, I think (I don't know, that's just what it looks like) that the Debian installer has taken a lot of tools from the Ubuntu one.
In any case, last time I installed LMDE (which is basically Debian) the installation was very similar to Ubuntu's.
13:48
@TheWanderer in fedora 26 (final version planned for release next week) is an alternative application additionally available in the anaconda installer that looks more convenient for "new" users -> fedoraproject.org/wiki/Blivet-gui
@ThomasWard Hi Thomas ! :)

@userDepth me gusta su avi
@TheWanderer What's AVI? Avatar?
14:19
yeah
14:32
lo dices por que parece un pinqüino? :P
14:47
You guys are weird. . .
@TheWanderer So you're learning South American Spanish?
@userDepth que?
@terdon I guess I am
I'm learning whatever my teachers are teaching and whatever the people in EsSO speak
@TheWanderer Most of the EsSO folk are from SA, yeah. Or they were when I chatted with them a while back. I asked because you used su which is the polite form and not what a speaker of peninsulár would say unless they knew that userDepth was very much older than they.
Makes sense though since there are way more speakers of the various SA dialects than there are of peninsulár.
my habit is to use the polite form until I get familiar with the person
idk if that's influenced by anything: maybe from when I was learning German?
@TheWanderer Which is reasonable enough. Just don't do it with a Spaniard as they might actually be insulted ("you calling me old?")
14:52
That happened to me once actually.
can't get it right with Spanish, eh?
supposedly, you're supposed to just use the polite form in German by default
dunno if that's actually true, but that's how I apply my Spanish
And that's fine for many dialects.
If anyone asks, just tell them you're Colombian :)
14:55
olo
I tend to avoid writing that for .. reasons
Don't blame me if you have a dirty mind and see genitals everywhere.
@terdon you seem to be in a good mood today ! :D
@terdon it is ok using "su" for someone you don't know. Here in DR people use "Don" for old people
@userDepth Yeah, it just made me realize that @TheWanderer's probably learning some south American Spanish.
14:57
So seven years from now I would be called "Don Carlos"
@userDepth Is that your definition of old? $currentAge + 7?
No I'll be 40 in 7 years
@userDepth Oy! That is not old, mi hijo!
I'll be 40 in 3.
Asi que no me jodas, nene! :P
And let's not get started on poor old @cl-netbox. . .
@cl-netbox BOXY!
:D
It's more about perception, age starts showing at 40. You don't need to have gray hair to be called "Don"
15:00
DonDepth
userDon
DonDepth has a nice ring to it :P
omg
terDon
Ha!
time to change your username @terdon @userDepth
No need, mine's already ready for the forties.
Apparently.
Although if anyone but my banker were to call me "Don" I wouldn't be happy with them.
15:02
Don Ter
Interesting, it seems like you related the "D" in my username with "Don" because it starts with "D"
I have seen Terdon around and I always think about "Ternera" which I think is a type of meat
@TheWanderer Mais non, arrête!
@userDepth beef
@terdon old ??? what ??? hahaha ... I am younger than some kiddies ! :D ... 1) you are as as old as you feel. 2) keeping your brain working helps to stay young. 3) in these days a huge amount of people pass 100 ... so what is "poor old" ? :D
15:03
Maybe I'll get a slice of Terdon

I've been trying to spend time in the EsSO and PtSO rooms
@TheWanderer Read it in Spanish.
ohhhhhhhhh
lol
15:06
:P
@terdon that is a criteria ... hahaha :D :D :D
@cl-netbox Naturally :)
is the J in Portuguese pronounced like the alternative LL in Spanish?
I don't think so. As far as I know, it's like in English.
So Joao, the name, sounds like it would if read in English.
Hmm. Softer, actually. So close to the ll, you're right.
yeah they said in the PtSO room that it was softer
15:09
Yeah, I don't speak Portuguese. I can read it but that's because of Spanish + French.
tsk tsk tsk
you disappoint me terDon
