what did you break

in Android on Stack Overflow Chat, 24 secs ago, by TheWanderer
if I'm using String.substring("multiplecharstring"), is there a way to get the index of g instead of m?

yes.

how

so currentText.substring(currentText.lastIndexOf(m.group().lastIndexOf(m.group().l‌ength())))?

what the hell are you doing
you want a substring starting at the end of somestring?

@TheWanderer Java...

@Seth Yeah well the only other choice on Android is C++. (Well, there's Kotlin but I'm not quite sure everyone should jump on the bandwagon just yet)

@TheWanderer Just found a very odd bug

@AndroidDev crashes on vol press? fixed

totally a frontend problem.
;P

@KazWolfe no when you do indexOf("string") it returns the index of "s"; I want the index of "g"

@TheWanderer no. See HTYD

idk what's going on

2:09 AM
@TheWanderer indexOf("string") + "string".length()

and for some reason + string.length() doesn't work

Shall I get the stack trace?

yes

sorry, i can't help too much right now. i have three blocker JIRAs right now that need to be solved tonight.

@TheWanderer Well well looks like our friend NPE is back: paste.ubuntu.com/24789653

2:13 AM
yeah I already fixed that

@TheWanderer You haven't pushed it yet though?

oh, ok

@TheWanderer You had that working before, no?

Of course not. They have cooties, don'tcha know.

isn't there a vaccine for that yet?

@Zanna Yes, but it only works on people.
Egad, reminds me of that "wonderful" sign. This was in one of those collections of horrible translations: "Dr. So and So, specialist in women and other diseases".

lol

10:37 AM
@Benny thanks! seems a lot of people liked that one for some reason!

11:26 AM
@terdon you know regex right?

Yeah

I need some help again

Shoot

I have this regex \B@(.+?)\b, but I need to replace \B with something that will either match the beginning of the input or a space
but not just any boundary

@TheWanderer In what regex flavor? What tool/language?

11:28 AM
Java

I think that uses some sort of PCRE, right?

I've been looking here but idk what I'm looking for
and I don't know how it works

Anyway, try (^|\s+)@(.+?)
Or, to use a non-capturing group:
(?:^|\s+)@(.+?)

first one doesn't quite work, trying second
same effect
the usage is I need to account for multiple occurences

What's your input? Are you sure it's the beginning of the string?
@TheWanderer Of what?

11:32 AM
of @whatever
so like @hi and some text @hue

@TheWanderer Then why are you using .+? instead of .+
?

well I only want to capture one at a time

The ? means "make it the shortest match" so it will stop as soon as one chatacter is found.

oh
I don't know regexes :p

Ah no, sorry, not with the \b

11:33 AM
yeah

The \b means it will continue until the first \b is found.
But it still won't find all of them. That will need a while loop or some sort of global operator if java has that.

well
Pattern.compile is supposed to find every match
Pattern p = Pattern.compile("(?:^|\\s+)@(.+?)\\b");
                        Matcher m = p.matcher(currentName);

                        try {
                            while (!m.hitEnd()) {
                                if (m.find()) {
                                    currentName = m.group().replace("@", "");
//                                    Log.e("NAME", currentName);
                                }
                            }
                        } catch (IllegalStateException e) {
you use a matcher and loop with that

Why are you escaping the slash? Why \\s instead of \s ?

m.find() finds the next occurence if it exists and then m.group() returns that occurence
that's how Java regex works
you need to use double escapes

Yes, I see. OK.

11:38 AM
\B@(.+?)\b works for the most part, but because \B is checking for any border, sometimes it replaces the wrong string (I think)

That's, uhm, annoying. Does that mean you also need to escape the OR( the |)?

no
but I don't think | is actually a valid regex in Java

But the regex is fine as far as I can tell.
@TheWanderer It is.
X|Y	Either X or Y

huh

On the page you linked to.

11:39 AM
weird it doesn't highlight it

Highlight?

my IDE

Oh.
So what are you parsing? What's your input?

hmm this is awkward lol
the regex is fine
I was just using an indexOf() where I should have been using lastIndexOf() :p

But you have extra whitespace after the beginning of the string?
@TheWanderer Ah :)

11:41 AM
of course, this won't work if someone goes to a previous ping in the text to edit it..
but I think I need to leave that up to @NathanOsman >_>

12:01 PM
\o

@Rinzwind So you wanna be an alpha tester of our app?
I can promise you lots of crashes :D
@terdon We're parsing messages in order to implement "ping-autocomplete" in our app
@TheWanderer wat. Yes it does work if you edit a previous one

@AndroidDev to be fair, it's a pretty sepcific case I'm predicting, but if you have, say @TheXed @AndroidDev @TheWanderer and go back to change TheXed to something else, it'll replace @TheWanderer
if you type in THE or less

@TheWanderer Oh, I see what you mean. BTW, you saw this?
in HueToYouDevs, 2 hours ago, by Android Dev
@TheWanderer Found another bug. Type anything into the AUGR message box and hit back. It crashes.

yup
fixed it just now

That's what you said yesterday :P

well that was a different NPE

@TheWanderer Well I just found another bug :( I can't tell you for sure what happened, but it seems that the app got paused and when I reopened it from the running drawer the color of the show chats FAB was the color set in the settings and not the automatic color

2:18 PM
these are pretty late-game bugs to fix
we really need to wait for ahem @NathanOsman ahem

@TheWanderer Or we could steal from the room15 project

I've had enough of screwing around with things I know nothing about
regex...

Lol. Why are we discussing this in here anyways instead of in HTYD?

you did it

😬

@Zanna No idea. Hey, do you want to be an alpha tester for the app that Nathan, Zach, and I are making?

3:58 PM
Huh, I didn't know that DOS is open source now!

\o
@AndroidDev eh. I missed something? app? >:-D

o/
Hello guys

and what do you mean "now" @AndroidDev It was opensourced a long time ago(??) 2015 or so?

@Rinzwind I wasn't aware of that until today :)

and technically it was not opensourced but more a "you can look at the code" :P

4:03 PM
@Rinzwind Yeah, Nathan Zach and I are making an Android client for SE chat

aha
well I got an nexus so ... link me up

You'll need Android Studio to build it, or alternatively we could also push the APK to the repo

ah :-)

Hello :)
@SeverusTux Hey who is that ? :D Hello my friend ! :)
@Rinzwind ha ! :D
@Rinzwind didn't you notice me ? wake up rinzy ! :D

4:38 PM
hello @cl-netbox :)

@SeverusTux nice to see you :) everything fine ? :)

Trying from morning to connect my USB MobileBroadband !
could you please have a look here : unix.stackexchange.com/questions/369542/… ?

@SeverusTux sorry, no idea how to solve it :)

@SeverusTux are the settings the same as in ubuntu ?

4:43 PM
the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Vodafone\ Vodafone\ Connect file is same
but /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf in Arch is empty

@SeverusTux strange ... I upvoted the question :)
@SeverusTux is it possible that arch uses another file ?

thankyou!
No, I am sure . it uses the same fiel
come on app.wire

@SeverusTux did you try to copy the content from ubuntu into the file ?

No, because ubuntu has some plugins. I am not sure copying the same would help. Let me give it a try

@SeverusTux done :)

5:04 PM
Hi
Anyone using 17.04 with Unity7 here?
@SeverusTux Are you sure the device is cdc-*?
You connected it into the USB port right?

@Anwar Hi Anwar ! :)

@AndroidDev I'd love to test it if it will run on any of my devices

@Anwar Yes, the device is cdc-wdm0
└─> $ nmcli device
DEVICE    TYPE      STATE         CONNECTION
wlo1      wifi      connected     KK 1
cdc-wdm0  gsm       disconnected  --
enp8s0    ethernet  unavailable   --
lo        loopback  unmanaged     --

Have you manually edited the file in /etc/NetworkManager or it was generated by gui?

It was generated by gui

5:13 PM
and you hand edited it later?

Yes, I added "password-flags=1"

why?

@SeverusTux why ? does it work when you remove this ?

because it was not working before, same problem, So I copied it from Ubuntu's config file
now its not there

From my experience, if you hand edit a gui generated connection file, it won't work. I don't know the reason

5:15 PM
I completely removed /etc/NetworkManager and reinstalled NetworkManager
the problem persists

Well, does your device have a led indicator?

@Anwar I can confirm the same ... for whatever reasons sometimes it generates problems :)

Yes
It shows green
even I get " Vodafone (HSUPA) " in my nm-applet . But when I click on it, nothing happens
When I try it from cli,
I get this :
 $ nmcli device connect cdc-wdm0
Error: Timeout 90 sec expired.

have you tried disconnecting and then reconnecting?

You mean removing the device ?

5:23 PM
yes

@SeverusTux can it be that the MAC address of the device and the IP address don't correspond correctly ?

yes I have done it many times
But, unlike Ubuntu, I don't have a "enable mobilebroadand"
option

I'm out of suggestions. sorry

@SeverusTux ah ... that might be the problem ! maybe you have to install a separate package for this in arch ? :)

no, its enabled by default

5:31 PM
@SeverusTux hmmm ... then I'm running out of ideas - sorry :(

Good evening, folks!

Good evening

@DavidFoerster Good evening David :)

WAT.

can you guide me through the reqfac stuff?

Okay.

so I can at least get all my work going through that
to HTYD

6:32 PM
@Zanna Well, if you've got an Android device with Ice Cream Sandwich or higher, it should work. Here's the link to the GitHub repo. You will need Android Studio to build it, or we could push the APKs to the repo for you.

I guess it should run on my phone or if not on my Nexus 7
installing Android Studio...

OH: Is Ask Ubuntu stupid? This doesn't work.

@AndroidDev were there any updates at all?

I'm tired..

OH?

@AndroidDev No no no - don't push the APK to the repo :P

@TheWanderer overheard

6:50 PM
Also, OH = Ohio.
Just sayin'.

@NathanOsman no need for such drastic measures for my benefit I hope ;)

Well, by that I meant the correct place to push an APK is through a release, not committing it to the repository.

ah of course...
this isn't a very helpful README # Useless comment (1)

it isn't a very helpful app yet either

6:58 PM
how do I build it then?

Android Studio
or magic

@Zanna If you have Android Studio installed, I can walk you through the process.

yes I have it installed and ready to go
should I be stepping into another room?

@Zanna You can join HTYD if you want

@AndroidDev @TheWanderer Required Features Yet To Be Developed: (1) OAUTH / OpenID support. Like seriously that's needed. (2) "Skip Tutorial" option. Because some of us will EVENTUALLY want to skip over that tutorial.
(3) Money.

money

but 1 and 2 are requirements :p

@ThomasWard The skip tutorial part is easy. One line of code

but what about money?

@AndroidDev It needs a button for skipping the intro tutorial or an option of "Would you like to see the tutorial? Yes/No" :P

So I'm retaking ENG-1020, which is research paper class. What the heck do I write about ? I mean, what do I research ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy worst part of writing.. I write when I care about something and then I write ok. otherwise it's just bad. But you can't force me to care about it either so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@KazWolfe Sounds like something @ThomasWard would say

;-)

@Seth well, I am sort of the same - as far as it's something personal or something where I've decent about of knowledge, I can write about it. But otherwise - it's pain. I was thinking of writing about coding or open source or Ubuntu in general, but . . . .
