@The_Immortal sure. But what exactly are you trying to accomplish and where did you learn about the --resolve flag?

Q: SSH logins without a password

jrwI know this is a basic question for many, but how would I set up a password-less login to an SSH server? According to the Ubuntu server guide, I would just import a key into my host machine, the one from which I am connecting, to the server where the key pair was generated. The opposite happened....

Scons is a horrible build system.

How so?

@EliahKagan I am trying to get NSIS to build on Arch and newer versions of Scons don't seem to work with Python 2.x and ... it's just a mess.

@DavidFoerster kali, poorly formatted crap, didn't bother to read any more.

Q: Ubuntu and Win10 on separate discs - where to put the Ubuntu Boot Loader

Q: Issue in adding Tags in Favorite Tags

αғsнιηIs this normal that I can add any text in "Favorite Tags" section which is not really called a tag? even I'm able to add duplicated entries! Is this a bug there or how that will work if I add "Hello Worl!" there as my favorite tag? This will help me to highlight what kind of Qs or As?

11:20 AM
@Videonauth CV OT

@TheWanderer oh, cmon shuddup :p

how are you?

tired

no wonder its early morning where you are
its past noon here already

11:21 AM
7:30 so meh

god in old ubuntu i would simply have deleted the compiz and dconf folder and have been good
but 17.10 is another ball game when it comes to this
guess the quicker way will be reinstalling frsh on the VM
no clue why it behaves like that

11:41 AM
@Videonauth did you login via the wayland session (by default) or the xorg session?

errrr, how do i find out, i simply installed in qemu-kvm and started it

logout - click the cog - the different sessions should be displayed

as long i was on 1024x768 all went fine but as soon i changed my screen resolution to 1920x1080 it was a goner
let me quick fire up the vm
wayland i guess
Ubuntu is ticket and not ubuntu on xorg

try xorg

yep now im back in bussiness
still does not explain why wayland is acting that weird

11:45 AM
it wasnt that long ago when wayland didnt work in a VM - at least it now has some compatibility.

up to that it completely reset my setting i had for the desktop
ah ok good to know
ok maybe i better test it on bare metal, xorg does not alow me to change resolutions at all
while wayland did the resolution change in the session and worked but refused to start up again after a reboot
tomorrow when they release 17.10 it will be a crapton of questions rolling in i guess
this is why i wanted to play around with it at least a bit

aye - thats normal - makes the place rather exciting

still to scared to install it on my machine

why? Nothing will change between today and tomorrow

not much at least
i hope the final image will at least boot up, the actual beta2 build iso file does not boot on my machine, not even via USB on bare metal
had to go for the daily-image

11:52 AM
yeah - the ubuntu beta was rather screwy
it has got better
for my part Ubuntu Budgie worked wonderfully
:P

well will see what happens
actually making a backup of my homefolder and my etc folder and tomorrow giving even do-release-upgrade a try but with an usb stick prepared for fresh installing the system
16:10 to 17.04 was the first do-release-upgrade which worked for me

word to the wise ... let others suffer the teething issues ... wait 3 - 4 weeks until all the patches roll in to make stuff stable.

yep may be the best on my main machine

especially this upgrade - its going to be bumpy for Ubuntu folk

and in worst case i have my laptop running gentoo :p
and yes im a masochist , even had LFS running for a while on my laptop

12:24 PM
hey cool, unity on 17.10 is still a thing, you jus t need to install it

yep - it will remain in the repositories ... until it no longer builds

is there a command which can tell me if im running wayland now or xorg from a terminal?

probably echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
that's a guess

just says unity

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

12:30 PM
yep x11
will relog now to wayland if i can and check if this really changes
nope wont let me in , ok going to do a fresh install so i can hop between all that stuff

Q: Jenkins in Docker doesn't have access to /dev/vboxnetctl for VirtualBox

MichaelI'm trying to set up Jenkins (runs in Docker; official image) which runs as user "jenkins". And Jenkins should start a virtual machine using docker-machine and virtualbox. @fossfreedom That's exactly what I expected from you and your team, because you've already done an excellent job so far ! :) Hi David, how you doing ? :)

@cl-netbox fine thanks - and you?

3:06 PM
@fossfreedom Everything okay so far - thank you ! :) Do you know how many users downloaded and installed ubuntu budgie in the last time ? I think many people might choose budgie in favor of GNOME. :)

@cl-netbox sorry - no I'm not made aware of that info by Canonical.

@fossfreedom oh, I thought there would be some statistics available. :)

not aware. What we are doing is adding more fire-power to our website so that it doesnt fall over as it briefly did at 17.04 release day due to the large numbers visiting. Cross fingers all will be well.

@fossfreedom Of course I cross my fingers for you ! :) I very much appreciate your efforts and your great work ! :) So let's hope everything works as it should ... :)

thank-you

@DavidFoerster well, monkey-patching that binary JAR file actually worked, surprisingly

Q: Should rant posts be considered against the "Be Nice" policy ("Rude/Abusive" flaggable)?

Thomas WardIt was brought up in antoher Meta thread a disagreement over the use of Rude/Abusive on rants. In so much as the link for the Rude/Abusive flag points to the Be Nice policy. In my experience, rants are not respectful and ultimately should be considered violations of the Be Nice policy. However...

einpoklumI'm running Linux Mint 18.2. For some strange reason, systemd is spawning a Java process running jetty, on localhost:8080. Hey ByteCommander: just finished last meeting.

at 11pm o.O?
oh my...

9:25 PM
and guess what? I finally got the Windows Subsystem for Linux installed on my Corporate laptop, although it's blocked.
(meh... 45 minutes ago already)

Uhm... nice? maybe?

I can press [Ctrl][Alt][T] and have bash running!
that's nice!

A friend uses it too, updates take the 42x time of a normal system. That Ubuntu shell seems severely Windows-infected.

I took the original Ubuntu version
Not the Microsoft version.

Dunno much about it.

9:27 PM
It's just bash on windows with any command-line utility you can install.
No GUI.
But I can grep and tail and even launch Excel.
:D
There's tons of stuff that doesn't work though...

I'll keep using Cmder and Cygwin.

I should get an upvote on meta [Just for mentioning 50 shades of Grey]..
Yeah, CygWin is OK...
I have the GNU utilities for Windows too, but I like it that WSL takes little memory and gives me bash. I;ll probably end up uninstalling it, but I wanted to have something to test stuff in without having to resort to VMs.

A: Should rant posts be considered against the "Be Nice" policy ("Rude/Abusive" flaggable)?

FabbyWhat is a rant? Is this a rant? No, but it was... Is can't even get started, really frustrated a rant? Yeah, but is it abusive? No... Don't try to put everything into categories; some things are just 50 shades of grey:

@ThomasWard Reading the first word of that made me think of you... the second word made it a certainty that it was you actually writing it!
You're driven and live and breathe stress and would die without.

I'm out!
good night all!
