@NathanOsman Why did you reboot? Did it crash? That's pretty impressive! Working on 2 years !

@AndroidDev it needs a patch.

@NathanOsman So you took it offline until you can patch it?

I am going to patch it very soon, but not yet.

@NathanOsman - But you do release that it has to be patched at both ends.

Client and server, yes. But upgrading my desktop is as easy as "apt-get upgrade -y" and reboot. The server, on the other hand, is running a lot of important processes.
It can't simply be rebooted at the snap of a finger.

12:22 AM
@NathanOsman My Amazon EC2 webserver was getting daily obfuscated PHP PUSH events from Chinese, Mexican, Russian, and Indian IPs, so I just restricted by IP location with the MaxMind database.
Now they all return 403! :)

Yeah, there are plenty of attacks going around.

@NathanOsman I also told Apache to return the bare minimum info on the server, hide the version number on 404 pages, disable directory listing and I have also restricted SSH to a single IP and it requires a .pem file to connect. I'm still not done hardening though :)

Q: Brightness up/down keys don't work

RenanI installed Ubuntu 16.04 on an ASUS Z450LA laptop, that has Intel HD5500 integrated graphics. The brightness up/down keys (Fn+F5/F6) don't work; however, if I use my desktop environment to control the brightness, it works, however is annoying to not have the easy way to control brightness. rewrite module is enabled and override option is allowed
but yet .htaccess doesn't seem to work, even though i restarted apache2 service

nevermind, seems like 000-default.conf was making the troubles

3:00 AM
hi

:31676641 no idea? swimming finished as far as I know

@AaronHall hi

Hey, I forked and cloned angband, then I did sh autogen.sh, then I did ./configure, then I did make, then I did make install, which failed, then I did sudo make install, which seemed to work, but when I we back to my home dir, typing angband gives me the ubuntu angband... :(

aha
well ... I got some good news

@Rinzwind Which is?

3:04 AM
Belgium got a gold medal in the heptatlon women :=)
And she deserved it :=D

@Rinzwind Total n00b alert: askubuntu.com/questions/812032/…
@Rinzwind Installing from something other than apt on an unsupported version.... <sigh>

@AaronHall, I'm not sure if I understood what you're asking, and I might be wrong on my assumption.. But I guess when you compile a program from source, that is already on ubuntu, when you type angbang the binary called will be the one on "/bin" (ubuntu's default), since it's the first folder on PATH with a match (or maybe it's hierarchical?)

@IanC 1st comes 1st serves ;-)

@AaronHall So you need to find where the make install installed the new version of angband, which is probably "/usr/local/bin", and run it like ./usr/local/bin/angband
@Rinzwind Thanks, I wasn't sure about that! I'm mostly guessing here haha

I'm pretty sure the . means current directory, but yeah, I didn't check for if it installed somewhere else on the path.
is there a path diagnostic?

3:12 AM
my bad, no "."
just /usr/local/bin/angband
usually the default folder used on make install scripts is /usr/local

@Rinzwind Actually, I take that back. THIS is the n00biest question I've seen so far: askubuntu.com/questions/759551/…

@AndroidDev dont make me find one :=D

@Rinzwind Please do! I want to see the noobiest question ever asked here :P

by the way @AaronHall, use checkinstall when you want to build from source and avoid future headaches
but I think the issue there is just the ubuntu's binary being found before the installed one on PATH, you could find the installed one and run it directly

@NathanOsman a lot of the Trump humor I see around seems like a pale imitation of doonesbury :D

3:16 AM
now I'll go sleep, feel like I was beaten up
night yall

gone :)
did not sleep since friday so I am going to need to catch up on that

@Rinzwind how is NMS

@Rinzwind O_O

I don't know what checkinstall is yet, but I'll sort it out tomorrow I guess, bedtime for now...

3:30 AM
Anyone else watch Phelps' last race?

No, I've been at fair all week, haven't been able to see much of anything ;(

Man, you missed some awesome stuff.
5 more gold and 1 silver for Phelps.

Dang
I know one of the US men's beach volleyball teams got upset pretty heavily by Austria
And le Clos was "blown out of the water" by Phelps :P
And USA men's indoor volleyball team got upset by Canada.
And then I didn't get to watch any more.
Hope I can catch a bunch this week

user227867
Just made the videos for fun.

4:58 AM
Sounds pretty good to me :D

user227867
Are you going to bed soon?

Yes. 10 o'clock here. I might stay up to watch the SpaceX launch in half an hour, but I'm pretty tired so that might not happen. Only reason I'm still up is because it is still pretty hot here.

user227867
I see. That's because you're hot, LOL.

LOL
Well it was nice of you to stop by @JasperLoy. I hope you are doing well otherwise :)

Q: How do you bookmark, keep an eye on a question on askubuntu

NhatAnh DangI want to follow this question which is hard to find and do not have an answer yet but will soon have one(hopefully). Any shortcuts, bookmark tool? P.S: The question is by Diego, tags are: 16.04; updates; login; console. It would be awesome if you can help to answer it

@AskUbuntuMeta You're a little late.

It got migrated @HenryWHHackv2.0.

I know that it said so.

He is not late then

Well, a mod never tryes to get someone banned.

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD Mods are not evil.
I think!

6:10 AM
Then WHY did you try and get me banned?

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD I did not tried to get you banned.

" We have confirmmed that Henry WH Hack v2.0 and ƎpᴉʇʎXD are the two exact same people" Eyerolls...

oops @HenryWHHackv2.0 I owe you two points, I edited that post while your edit was pending

@HenryWHHackv2.0 no, we should keep the transcription if possible

@edwinksl Okay!
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD ƎpᴉʇʎXD sorry! :(

Don't do that again. I almost ate the banhammer because of you.

I love the room owner option

well, i think this question is clear. but somehow closed as unclear askubuntu.com/q/807982/61218. could you reconsider the votes, please :)
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD I think, everybody loves it.
but idk who's the owner of this room

6:43 AM
the owner of the room is every moderator in 2013

just seen it

@AnwarShah voted to reopen

voted to reopen... idk why I voted to close it

thank you voters :)
@Zanna that happens sometimes

i like how your answer is basically RTFM ;)

6:46 AM
I think I'm getting better at not VingTC something when I don't get what it's about haha

ha ha.

oh I'd already upvoted your answer though

@Zanna i always blame my fat fingers when mistakes happen
now i am not sure if you have fat fingers, but i certainly do

I bet your fingers are not fat

fat enough to misclick ;)

6:48 AM
idk if my fingers are fat, but on my phone I can misclick anything
I think I accidentally downvoted a couple of times that way :(

you can always do the phantom edits and then reverse your accidental downvotes :D

I believe, fatness of finger doesn't play a role here.

haha phantom edits, good idea!
lol @edwinksl looks like you are a victim of my fat fingerz

wait how did i get a +2

I didn't even realise there was a tab for downvotes

6:57 AM
@edwinksl someone undid their downvote

lol that honest edit message xD

sorry about that!

@AnwarShah oh lol i thought it was for an edit :x
@Zanna don't be, mistakes happen, and i am also sufficiently thick-skinned to handle downvotes ;)

I got +1, smallest (and easiest) rep increase in history... let's see if I can find any more of those...

@Zanna That's not phantom edit though

7:00 AM
so what is a phantom edit?

revert it again to the version before your edit
within 5 minutes
ah! it's late i think!

ahh smart

if you do it within 5 mins. there will be no history of your edit :D

isn't there a time period after which you cannot retract a downvote?

@edwinksl yes. after 5 minutes of last edit, you can't retract

7:03 AM
if there is, then i guess making an edit and then retracting the downvote is the way to go
there are always edits that can be made to make a post better

that'll be in history
true phantom edit is, edit a small bit, retract the vote, and change again to the same version.

that's fine though, i consider it a workaround for retracting "late" downvotes

roll back doesn't work as far as i know.

thanks for teaching clever tricks ^_^

I learnt it from jokerdino. credit goes to him

7:06 AM
i guess it shouldn't be called phantom if it leaves a trace :P

I won't leave a trace.
That's why it is phantom

indeed

so I'm curious... in the picture, it doesn't look like the partition is mounted askubuntu.com/questions/812068/error-while-deleting-partition (I don't have gnome-disks on MATE but I remember that the little triangle means mounted?) so why is it "in use"? And should we just dupe this question because they should back up and boot a live session and use gparted like it says here askubuntu.com/questions/126153/how-to-resize-partitions/… ?
amused by @Serg ending meta post "EOF" ^_^ meta.askubuntu.com/a/15924/527764
bbl

EOF is the new QED

don't know. but I'm against using gnome-disks for jobs like partitioning etc. It's tooooo buggy
Totally unreliable. Gparted is the best

7:16 AM
Gparted is the best!

7:35 AM
Ubuntu MATE comes with Gparted instead... good decision

A: 404 Image Nominations

Nathan Osman From linuxowns.files.wordpress.com.

haha why the downvotes?

I made my own 404 page a long time ago partly as an exercise in writing definition lists: andrews-corner.org/test
I think wordpress and friends have killed such niceties of syntactical html :(

awww cute spider

8:06 AM
That was funny back then: spider -->web <-- but not so much any more :)
Actually an error on that page I just noticed as the link back to the main page is incorrect!

ahh then it was good that @HenryWHHackv2.0 brought up the subject
now you can fix it

Fixed :)

I got an email from the parent of one of my students and I treated it like an SE question ^_^ pastebin.com/fVSwPdTW

@Zanna What Subject?

@Zanna Your maths powers have freaked me out a little :)

8:10 AM
echo $((440%60)) xD

404 subject

@Zanna Oh Ok.

all my rich clients have macs haha

404 it's found! :D
404 where found! :D

Anybody else here have a personal web page I can sticky beak at?
Maybe I slandered wordpress too quickly.....

8:22 AM
@Zanna i figured that all the screenshots blurring together with background make it hard to see where the answer ends, so i added EOF. Redundant, but at least I amused you ;)

It was hard to see where it ended! That EOF definitely helps the human parse

On the side note, today I've realized that in addition to not being able to take classes this semester, I will be out of my lab job too ( because to work in the labs, i have to be registered for at least 6 credit hours)

awww that sucks!

yup . . . . so, I'm in not a very good situation

:( I'm afraid I missed the beginning of the story so I don't know why you can't take classes... hmm what can be done?

8:33 AM
In a nutshell, my mom used to pay my tuition. This summer she's basically got "fed up", and told me go get a loan. And it's pretty much weeks before school starts, so I doubt i can get a loan that fast.
And i need to shop for health insurance too, because after 26 in the US one is required to buy their own, instead of being dependent on parent's plan.

Difficult.....

so yeah . . . .fun times. I've 136$ in my pocket, no insurance, (soon) no job, and no classes for fall. Great . . . .I wish i could just stay in China and not come back to this BS in engineering . . . .

:( :( go teach english in China, save lots of money, come back next semester...

@Zanna I would love that ! Problem is, i have $136 in my pocket. I cannot buy ticket there. Visa might be OK, but it probably expires soon or already has

normally the company that employs you will pay for your flight
in my experience anyway
but only if you do a longer contract, like 1 year or minimum 6 months
they help you with visa as well sometimes

8:48 AM
Eh , might as well look for something like that. A lot of places in China now require at least some kind of degree, many require bachelors. Without one, I'll be teaching children probably . . . which is fine with me. I would just prefer high-school or college level folks, because those are less naughty and more about getting education

oh yeah a degree is usually stated as prereq... do you have an ESOL type qualification? But they state the requirements more strictly than they really hold them... maybe things have changed, but it was very easy for me to get a job in China in 2009

@andrew.46 by the way, just noticed. Congrats on reaching 10k. Keep up the good work

Thanks @Serg, and good luck with your work, money, health insurance issues!!!!!

@Zanna what is ESOL ?

English for Speakers of Other Languages
I have the Cambridge Trinity certification now (month long, super intense, costs £1000), but when I went to China I had only done a weekend course
in the UK we call it TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language... I thought ESOL was the USian term... but my memory may be failing me haha
ESL - English as a Second Language ?

8:53 AM
Um . . . .I have no qualification or certification . . . .technically speaking, high school diploma is all I have . . . . and years and year in college . . . .
yup, ESL = english as second language ,ELA = english language acquisition

you might struggle a little bit then, because they don't have anything to go on. If you could rock up in China and present yourself, you'd probably get by on charm and smarts.
You should crowdfund your TESL qualification acquisition... I will contribute ^_^
but I am broke too :(

I think the weekend course I took was about £150... my brother did something similar... he taught in Engish in Japan for over a year before he finally found a coding job there

@Serg Are you ok/okay?

I am OK . . . yet

9:03 AM
Words of Wisdom: Don't just write the code be the code! :)

so i was reading some article and came across this particular statement:
but then as we know common sense is very fairly distributed - people rarely complain that they haven’t got enough of it

Oh, I'm going to continue writing code. I still haven't started writing those two indicators for ByteCommander. But I will, slowly, but I will

xD

I hate thay phrase actually. Common sense implies that your opinion is common. Which may be not. Even more, it implies opinion is correct. Which may be not

"common sense" usually means "the ability to think like me"
3

9:11 AM
@Zanna ah, i see we got some sense in common XD

Ok i have a question The guy called David Foerster is this like a mod or somthing?

@Serg @Zanna agree with both of you

@Cyber_Star why do you ask ?

Bcause litterally 9/10 comments he makes is this is not a good answer thats is not good you did this wrong ...
I'm just trying to freaking help
and all he does is give negative comments

@Cyber_Star well, he is a high reputation user witb lots of experience. If he say so, there is clearly something wrong with your post. Give us an example

OK, first off backup of wasn't necessary, as well as editing that file. pip can be installed via apt-get. What else ?
@Cyber_Star see , I understand you're trying to help , and I understand you're putting time into answering , but 1) don't take it personally - David has lots of experience and one can learn a lot from him. People on the site don't gain anything from downvoting or critiquing posts 2) Reconsider your answers , ask for feed back , maybe even ask on meta.askubuntu.com for explanation from other users on why your answer is considered not as good.

@Serg well said 👍

Does a middle probability of 0.003128% mean I'm serving 0.003128% of Tor traffic (as a middle relay)?
@ParanoidPanda is this fixed in version 4?
And does this affect servers?

user136984
@grooveplex: No, no fix has yet been released. And yes, it does also affect servers.

user136984
It was introduced in version 3.6.

Anyone got any ideas on this matter by the way? Seems that it's still not completely gone.

Q: How to fully remove QEMU?

Paranoid PandaI have QEMU installed but as I don't really use it and it's recently had lots of security vulnerabilities discovered in it so I would like to fully remove it. user136984
Thanks for that! :)

:) np
Thank you for bringing this to my attention
I've just fixed my server

user136984
Apparently (according to the news), the USA Today (whatever that is) server is also affected by this issue and so are a huge number of other services. They have been ever since 2012.

user136984
@grooveplex: I've updated my question and answer to hopefully make it clearer and give a little more detail.

user136984
Maybe we should have a pinned notice here or something linking to that workaround answer and the issue in the news.

user136984
1:21 PM
Because this is a really major thing, I'm surprised more aren't talking about it.

user136984
But I guess it is Sunday...

user136984
Maybe I'll write something in a moment and try to get pinged... Just need to finish a question first though and nobody seems to be around...

user136984
IMPORTANT: You need to apply this workaround ASAP to stop the RFC 5961 Linux TCP flaw from allowing hackers from easily breaking or hijacking your communications with a server also running Linux. This issue has been present since kernel version 3.6 (in 2012) and a patch has not yet been released.

user136984
It would be good if someone could star that ^^.

1:37 PM
As you wish.
No idea about the cryptswap problem yet?

user136984
And ideally it should be pinned for a while ( @jokerdino @terdon ).

user136984
@ByteCommander: Haven't looked at that yet... Will now though. :)

Hello everybody ! :)

user136984
No mods seem to be around... Maybe @Nathan could pin it when you come on? It is a really major issue so we really should have some sort of notice around the place. We normally do for this sort of thing.

user136984
@cl-netbox: Hi! \o :)

1:43 PM
@ParanoidPanda Why should we pin a security vulnerability that was discovered 6 years ago? What makes you think it hasn't been fixed?

@ParanoidPanda Hi ! :)

user136984
@terdon: What? But I only just heard the news... The articles I read said no patch has yet been released.

user136984
And the problem was introduced in 2012, 6 years ago is 2010.

user136984
I received news from a very big and trusted security organisation, and they said no fix had yet been released.

user136984
1:45 PM
Ok, well, I'll have a look at that in a moment, need to go and eat now...

That said 2010, but you're right the zdnet link is this year.

user136984
I received the news in a SANS email newsletter with at least 3 links to external news sites. It was this week's news, they wouldn't get something big like that wrong.

@ParanoidPanda : Did you install the qemu-kvm package additionally and forget to purge it ?

@ParanoidPanda Yeah, you're right. For some reason, they link to a report made by researchers in 2010, that's what threw me.

Just a side note, I'll be on vacation (and probably without internet) for the next two weeks. Please don't miss me too hard and please don't burn the site down again like last time I was away...

@cl-netbox: I did install it, but I did also purge it, yesterday.

user136984
When I purged qemu and virt-manager.

@terdon: Strange...

> sbeattie> fix is going to land in Ubuntu kernels in this SRU cycle,
with a likely release date of Aug 27. Earlier access to the kernels
with the fix will be available from the -proposed pocket, though they
come with the risk of being less tested.

@ParanoidPanda Then execute : top and search whether a qemu service is running nevertheless ! :)

user136984
Phew, you had me worried there that I had picked up on some 6 years late news and was worried for no reason... I was thinking I was going mad... :D

1:50 PM
Hi @ByteCommander ! I wish you nice holidays ! :)

Argh, I'm an idiot! I was looking at the report of the "improved" TCP/IP standard which introduced the vulnerability.

Hi terdon ! :)

Hey

user136984
@cl-netbox: Seems not, but maybe it died on startup when it failed. Some services don't survive that.

user136984
But it does definitely seem to be starting at startup.

1:51 PM
@terdon: Ah, well that would explain it.

@ParanoidPanda I think that everything is okay ... there are no qemu execution files on your systems anymore ! :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: I still don't like the fact that something is trying to run them. What if some malware exploiting a flaw gets in and pretends to be it? I never like my system to try and run things or have spaces ready for them when the stuff is gone.

user136984
It's strange to think that I have a body and don't just exist here... :D

@ParanoidPanda Although I think that you don't have to fear such malware exploitng things coming along ... to avoid those kind of side effects, you should always create a clonezilla image before installing complex software such as virtualization packages and instead of purging simply restore the clonezilla image in case ... :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Hmm... Well I don't have that option at the moment so any ideas? :)

1:59 PM
@ParanoidPanda No - and as I said : qemu is gone and if top shows no services running, everything is absolutely okay ... by the way, why did you remove qemu ?
