@Rinzwind ?

@AndroidDev that's my rep :D

2:59 AM
@Rinzwind So to make it perfect you need 2 more reps

nice palindrome

no! :D

but it isn't going to last long :D

@AndroidDev then the 1st 1 looks out of order
@edwinksl max rep for today >:-D No idea when it resets but cant be long

@NathanOsman But at least they're nice!

3:00 AM
oh damn. it flipped :D It is y-day's rep

Woo! Ca-na-da!

@NathanOsman You did just get your first gold :D

@NathanOsman Congrats on returning to the beat version of Windows ever...

3:07 AM
the number of medals that can be farmed in swimming is insane

@Seth Was that the tie?

yep

@NathanOsman yes

Can you imagine how that feels at just 16?

Rugby 7s was fun to watch :D
Fiji <3

3:09 AM
Did anybody notice yesterday I think when Phelps was looking at videos on his laptop that he has a super old Dell Latitude?

If Michael Phelbs was a country he would be listed 10th on the medal list :P

@Rinzwind Wow.

Exactly
republic of michael phelps

@rancho Now if only he was running Ubuntu on his laptop :(

:)

3:11 AM
Hockey men Netherlands India was funny
with 6 seconds remaining India got a penalty corner
and they got 5 more after that due to a dutch man using his foot or leg to stop the ball

@rancho Oh, there we go! My rep just went down.

India still lost though :D

and am I banned too?

@rancho I got -60 for voting correction.

lol

3:14 AM
@rancho dunno. But I was right when I said the system would find it!

jkllkmpmkl.,ipijlk.,mi

@Seth Yeah, @Zacharee1 and I had to explain to him that serial voting is not good :)

oh, no I was laughing at something else.
I was going to post about it here, but stopped.

@Seth Oh.

3:15 AM
but it is bad.

Yay, I almost have VS2013 installed. That took... a long time.

@NathanOsman Do yourself a favor and make a system image.
When you are done.

Prolly not a bad idea.

@NathanOsman in vbox I hope?

Can I make an image directly to an SMB share?

3:17 AM
is someone serial voting?

@Rinzwind On bare metal.

@NathanOsman sure
@NathanOsman yuck >:-D

@Rinzwind Dude, graphics performance.

sorry for the double ping :+)
@KazWolfe was. and it was small scale ;-)

This laptop doesn't have IOMMU or VGA pass-through.

3:18 AM
sigh.

So the only way to get native performance is to run... natively.

get a better laptop :P

I have VGA pass-through on my desktop though.

no the better method was to get a better notebook >:)

@NathanOsman If you have Pro.
Home can't.

3:20 AM
ok 5:20. OS stopped. Time for a 2 hour nap and then back to no man's sky.
laterz :D

@KazWolfe rancho serial upvoted me. But zach1 and I told him not to do it again :)

huh.

@KazWolfe Well I had posted in chat earlier that I needed 4 more repz to get 3k, and he took the opportunity to give me 100 repz.

You know #Microsoft has a good business model with #VisualStudio. Just as you finish installing one version, they release the next version!

@NathanOsman What's great about system images is that they are essentially a VHD of your hard drive.
@Seth And don't forget messing up the uninstaller so that it wrecks your system :)

3:26 AM
Hey anyone know how to convert a jpg to a vector image?

@TheXed I think you can go SVG > JPG, but not the other way around :(
@TheXed This site CLAIMS to do it...google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://…
@NathanOsman - BTW, I recommend you have a look at Open Hardware Monitor. Its on github
@Videonauth - How come your rep curve has dropped? :(

@TheXed Sure, just embed the JPG.
If you want an actual vector outline from the JPEG, then you'll have to do that yourself.

I don't know what they need...I got an email that they need a vector image or our school logo..

Then you'll have to trace it.

3:42 AM
I don't have the skills or tools...

It's a compressed filesystem the installer uses.
This gets copied directly to your hard drive during installation.

i know
now its saying it has a block sigh

We can't really know what went wrong without seeing the logs.

so @NathanOsman, how do we make linux a true gaming platform?
if we all boycott non-linux games, nobody would care because it's so small

4:09 AM
Get everyone to stop using DirectX and move to Vulcan, for one.
Anything that runs on Vulcan is (usually) trivial to port to Linux.
Ironically, Wine may be hurting gaming on Linux since it gives companies an excuse to avoid Linux.
"Oh, our app sort-of runs on Wine, so no need to invest time in a Linux version."
7

@NathanOsman we also need to get people to stop using Java and Flash...

but they're not gonna stop
because the devs already know it and there's no market demand
we'd have to convince almost the entire PC industry to stop buying non-linux games, and who would do that just for the sake of an OS they don't use?

@KazWolfe Steam has made some headway for gaming on Linux...

no man's sky, bethesda, etc

nobody cares about linux, which is just sad. if people actually did things and drivers were written for it, it would be one of the best possible platforms for gaming to ever be made

I want to know the benefits of this systemd thing

extremely light, so no overhead for processes like Windows has. Completely open, so it won't have the mystery of OSX
Fully customizable unlike XB/PS
@AnwarShah It's basically init/upstart. I personally like systemd because of everything it can do, but some people dislike the fact that it's so intrusive and a large part of the boot process

what was the problem with upstard?

functionally they're practically identical. But, systemd gets far more control than upstart. I think it starts earlier and hands off the second login is ready
dont quote me tho

Thank you.
There is a saying, Don't fix when it's not broken

5:10 AM
eh, that's debatable

I don't know why they're constantly changing this and that!

if we didn't fix unbroken things, we'd be still in VAX
like i said, I personally like systemd (even though it can be annoying), but i'm not everyone

I used to use sudo service lightdm restart in crash situation
and It would restart the whole login session
very nice

it still does..?

Now, I can't.

5:13 AM
that's... odd. Service handling is roughly the same. If you kill LightDM, it will kill X and the entire graphical stack

I don't know which user is used to start lightdm or display manger

the lightdm user, iirc
lightdm or root

can you check please? switch to vt1 and use the command sudo service lightdm restart

on crapdos

I earlier ubuntus, it shuts down all processes, forces the user out from graphical session

5:17 AM
i seem to remember it still did that

I tested multiple times in 16.04. Nothing happens :(

i'll check tomorrow when i get to my work pc
that doesn't seem right

OK. don't forget to ping to let me know the result

are you actually using lightdm?

It's frustrating. That was really a cool workaround. Now, I must restart in a crash

5:19 AM
@NathanOsman DirectX is horrible

How do you know?

Nah, I'm using now sddm

i'm pretty sure lightdm does kill X
i'll test tomorrow

but I tried it with lightdm, gdm3. all the same

DirectX crashes some of my apps

5:21 AM
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD I doubt DirectX is causing the crashes.

it is

directx can't crash apps directly
it's like saying "java crashes my app"

......

it would be your graphics driver
or a poor DX implementation
or your d3dx dll/whatever the hell it is is bad
but directx itself can't crash anything

k
it says directx error and then stops working

5:26 AM
try reinstalling directx and your graphics drivers
a directx call failed, likely a problem talking to your card

Nice going @K.Wolfe That last spam! :D

@HenryWHHackv2.0 what was that?

oh, what if i turn into a spam post into a legit question ? :D

I've seen several questions like this however

ohmygod youtube i love you

like this and this

oh, that's me!
yay
you could ask something like "What features does systemd provide that upstart doesn't?"

Thank you for the suggestion
Hope it wouldn't be closed

@AnwarShah I hope you get some good answers for your init question. I think Stefano Palazzo could write something there, he explained a little to me why systemd is helpful. (it is my friend too as I can suspend my system now)

how has it upset you?

I used to use sudo service lightdm restart in crash situations and that re-starts the X and brings me the login window

@edwinksl why?

you can record them in seconds with `date +'%s' then do the maths to get whatever you want ..min hours ..days
Unix time (also known as POSIX time or Epoch time) is a system for describing instants in time, defined as the number of seconds that have elapsed since 00:00:00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), Thursday, 1 January 1970, not counting leap seconds. It is used widely in Unix-like and many other operating systems and file formats. Because it does not handle leap seconds, it is neither a linear representation of time nor a true representation of UTC. Unix time may be checked on most Unix systems by typing date +%s on the command line. == Definition == Two layers of encoding make up Unix time. These...
