I think I need to install some graphics driver
been noticing some small really quick screen glitches
how can I check the current GFX drivers being used?

@IanC Thanks. My dictionary is thinking too complex... ;)

no problem! :)

@ByteCommander thanks for the fish!
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish is the fourth book of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 'cycle' written by Douglas Adams. Its title is the message left by the dolphins when they departed Planet Earth just before it was demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, as described in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The phrase has since been adopted by some science fiction fans as a humorous way to say "goodbye" and a song of the same name was featured in the 2005 film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. == Plot summary == While hitchhiking through the galaxy, Arthur...
:D

spotify is to damn smart, i change my user-agent string android and it still keeps giving desktop site

12:08 AM
Probably it only examines your browser window size. Resize it to small width.

@ByteCommander nope, still the same
Totally works for AU chat though :D

shrug

12:27 AM
@ByteCommander Actually, you were right . . . I've resized my webapp , and it now works

Q: perf fails to work on really large process

ShlomiI use perf quite often to profile my applications. Recently I got a few new machine with ~750G RAM each. I am trying to profile a process that uses about 400G of ram on one of them. This works fine on the these machines besides one of them. They were all installed the same way, running ubuntu. I...

freakin spotify want flash

@NathanOsman - So, how did the RAM upgrade go?

Good, thanks.
I had a bit of trouble at first - it was recognized in the BIOS but neither Linux nor Ubuntu would use it.

hello

12:40 AM
@NathanOsman Memtest passed without errors?
@rancho Hi.

I opened the case again and discovered I didn't push it in all the way :D

say

Then it worked. And yes, memtest seemed to think it was okay.

@rancho Can I ask what theme you are using and which flavor of Ubuntu?
@rancho - Looked so much like OSX I almost flagged as off-topic :)

MacBuntu theme on Ubuntu 16.04

12:41 AM
@rancho Is it in the default repos?
@NathanOsman Out of curiosity, what speed and timings are they running at combined?

@rancho Hmm. I'll have to try it in a VM. Thanks!

welcome :)

@AndroidDev Good question, I'll check.

@Serg Obviously, they want to exploit a bug, and gain complete remote control of your computer :)

12:45 AM
10-10-10-27 (Corsair) and 9-9-9-24 (generic) - does that sound right?
I can give you the full output of decode-dimms if you want it.

@NathanOsman Yes, but.... how is that possible? Are the different brands each on their own MC, or are they mixed?

I honestly don't know.
My motherboard only has two DIMM slots.

@NathanOsman O_o

It's an ASUS F2A55-M LE if that helps.

@NathanOsman Who knows. Maybe Intel upgraded their MCs to be able to run the different modules at different speeds, but that just doesn't seem right.
@NathanOsman - However,
@NathanOsman - Are those timings being reported what the RAM supports running at, or what they actually are running at?

12:49 AM
I'll give you the full output.

@NathanOsman Not Ubuntu paste?

Does it matter?

@NathanOsman No :)

@NathanOsman - Can you post the output of sudo lshw -C memory | grep clock please?

12:54 AM
nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ sudo lshw -C memory | grep clock
          clock: 1600MHz (0.6ns)
          clock: 1333MHz (0.8ns)
       clock: 1GHz (1.0ns)
       clock: 1GHz (1.0ns)

@NathanOsman Hrrm. Well sounds like I need to do some research on this subject! Thanks for the outputs :)

@AndroidDev could be that but seems more like it's a legal issue for them

@Serg But flash in Chrome[ium] is sandboxed anyway, no?

@AndroidDev no idea, tbh

1:47 AM
@Serg good evening
i was able to get my memory chips in order
now when i do a ls it hangs
it says something like inode something
pwd works
but ls just hangs
why is the file system not responding ?
df works

<sigh>

A: error occurred while loading the archive

Android DevYou can't run .exe files on Linux. (Technically speaking you can though WINE...) Linux software is installed though apt, or through .deb files. To install W10, you'll need to download the .iso file and use Brasero to burn it to a DVD.

@gansub hi there, what's the exact error that it gives you ?

@Serg no error
it just hangs
the inode error occurs when i try to logout

@gansub but you mentioned something about inode

that occurs when i logout
@Serg i had another question

2:10 AM
yes ?

when i do a cat 'find . -name "*.f"` | grep pattern
it returns nothing
but i know the pattern does exist in the subdirectory file
why is that ?
what i want is this
i want a find and then i pipe to cat and then i grep for a pattern
i want to find all fortran files and then cat them one by one and then grep for a pattern

@gansub you don't need to use cat there , remove cat and single quotes
find . -name "*.f" | grep pattern
that's if you want to find them

@Serg that greps the list of the name of files
i dont want that
i want to grep the content of the files

In that case do, grep -R -I 'pattern'
this will recursively search current directory
$ grep -R -I 'gsettings'   | head
language_sources.py:def gsettings_get(schema,path,key):
language_sources.py:        gsettings = Gio.Settings.new(schema)
language_sources.py:        gsettings = Gio.Settings.new_with_path(schema,path)
language_sources.py:    return gsettings.get_value(key)
language_sources.py:def gsettings_set(schema,path,key,value):
My example

ok wonderful thanks !

2:16 AM
@gansub also , can you please do this :
$ LC_ALL=C df -i /
Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
/dev/sda1      7331840 648316 6683524    9% /

@Serg as root or as myself ?

doesn't matter

ok hang on
@Serg did it
you want output ?

just IUse %

ok wait
for /dev/sda1 it is 9 %

2:19 AM
hmmm, your inode usage seems ok . . .

i ran photorec for 1 day continously
OK ?
i only had 32 % full before that
now it is 67 % full
on /dev/sda1
there are a hell of lot of recovered files from over 2 years
and when i ran photorec the disk was making a lot of noise
now it is cooled down
occasionally the system froze during the running of phototec
and i could not logout
now it is responding again

@gansub wait, you have two disks right ?

@Serg no just one now
we could not attach two disks to this

oh . . .

there was not enough space
i got the SATA cable but could not find a slo
slot
@Serg gosh your grep command is still goin'
like the Energizer battery
i got lots of files

2:23 AM
that's good, i hope ?

@Serg i have to give high recommendation for photorec
it is a miracle worker
it is YUUUGE as somebody would say

:) @gansub praise to the developers who made it

i sent a note to it's developer

i wish i could write software like this, but so far I know very little
right now, I'm writing brightness indicator for Ubuntu desktop, figuring out how to make it work with mouse scroll

@Seth does your TMO friend have TMO phones or other carrier?

2:39 AM
@Serg - you need to look at kernel code i reckon

my code-fu not strong enough to play with kernels

it is just C programming

2:58 AM
@ByteCommander good news, I figured out how to distinguish scrolling up and down for the logarithmic brightness indicator.I will begin working on it tomorrow.

ooh logs
it's lo-og it's lo-og it's big it's heavy it's wood
it's lo-og it's lo-og it's better than bad it's good

@Zacharee1 you're not canadian , why are you singing about logs ?

@ByteCommander by the way, the behavior you described (small steps in low range, big steps in high range) is a misnomer , that's exponential behavior

I dont feel well today

good morning

That was not pleasent

?
@Serg new profile picture hype?

3:31 AM
you know what's fun?
editing your phone's NV to potentially enable locked LTE bands

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD yes, i joined wolves

ADD OBUNTU PLEASE @Zacharee1 I BEG YOU
Aug 6 at 20:56, by Android Dev
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD It could be a penguin saying "ooooOOOHHH" and pointing to the Ubuntu logo with his wing.
@Seth o/

@Zacharee1 I don't know. I know his personal phone was missing 1 Tmo band, but the other phones were Tmo phones. Anyway, he got some LTE back a week ago or so, then switched to AT&T.
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD hi

lol

3:37 AM
I have 4G LTE

well I just found out my area doesn't have the one overlapping band with Verizon

they're working on the tower here to add it, but no ETA
so I'm haxxoring my phonez

Does anyone know about systemd here ?

no lol

3:38 AM
i only know windows

no bootloop please
oh good

@Serg What's up?

@NathanOsman so . . . I'm confused . . . Does systemd even read /etc/init stuff ?

uh oh

or everything is in /usr/lib/systemd/user ?

3:42 AM
@Serg nope.
@Serg Do you mean /lib/systemd/system?
Oh, heh.
There are some unit files in /usr/lib/systemd/user too.
I didn't know that some were stored there.

OK, I can see why people are confused about it
so why on earth do we still have scripts in /etc/init and /etc/init.d then ?

Compatibility.

AGH
Every time I select MTP for USB, my phone shuts down
This isn't good :(

MTP is nearly useless anyway.

3:55 AM
@NathanOsman not when you're editing your phone's NV, screw it up and want to revert it isn't

I think Recovery has an ADB mode somewhere you can use.

yeah but I don't think I can edit NV

Did you try?

not yet
phew
rebooting to Recovery helped, but not in the way you think
I rebooted to it and then system and it recognized the diag ports

4:11 AM
Recognized the what?

diagnostic ports
unfortunately it keeps saying it can't communicate through them

4:36 AM
I think I broke my phone...
:(

But it still runs?

yeah but no service

I wonder if reflashing will reset the NV.
It's worth a shot.

idk
I could reflash the modem
hmm
the radio isn't turning on

What model do you have again?

4:41 AM
Note 4 Verizon on Cyanogenmod

?
Scroll down to "Master reset with hardware keys".

Verizon model
but that won't apply

Why won't it apply?
The hardware keys are the same.

yeah but I have custom recovery
overrides all the default stuff

Can't you flash the factory recovery first?

4:44 AM
don't want to
trying the modem flash first

Whatever :P

flashing to stock will lock the bootloader
I'll have to downgrade to Lollipop, root, unlock, flash a hybrid firmware, root, unlock, flash CM again
and the root is really unstable; only lasts about 5 minutes before the phone freezes

It seems Unclear What you're asking has become new favorite choice!
Many of them are simply because the reader/flagger wasn't familiar with the application in question.
And some others because of ugly formatting.

5:00 AM
OK, we're getting somewhere
only GSM died

Yay, it's only semi-bricked now.

my VZW SIM seems to work OK
but no LTE either

5:19 AM
yikes

NEWS: french gymastic thingy has broken his leg: independent.co.uk/sport/olympics/…

5:44 AM
@NathanOsman I pulled the values from my mom's phone. Hopefully, I'm back to getting EDGE only
then I can play with LTE ONLY

5:55 AM
@AnwarShah :P UWyA is becoming a popular fashion now

I think I killed my TMO SIM

@Zacharee1 why do you want to play with LtE?
don't modify your phone.

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD because I have a Verizon phone on the T-Mobile network. It only has one overlapping frequency for LTE, and that frequency happens to not be available where I am

if it's not available, dont modify it! tm

I'm trying to unlock extra LTE bands, so I can actually get LTE

6:23 AM
Hello
I'm just installing for first time a system under software raid
But I'm not clear what to do for install Grub
I have 5 HDD, created a RAID6 during the installation (created a free partition in every disk and made them part of the raid), but I don't believe is possible install Grub in the raid, right?

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD but I'm not fan of that FLAG

me neither

Anyone used lxqt in 16.04? I installed it but it's look and feel is same as the old LXDE
am i missing something?

i might try it at some point
@HEDMON i don't think at this moment there's anybody in chat who knows about RAID , so you might be better off by asking question either on the main site or unix.stackexchange.com

:31589672 Hi

6:37 AM
well, first verify it's him
long time no see! how were you?

lol quite busy recently... at present on vacation in France

have a nice holiday!

it definitely is.
Internet is too slow here :( but better than nothing.
(speedtest times out)

not slower than here I guess
O.o
sorry for that. but it has some good side too.
Holidays are more enjoyable when you're cut off of Internet imo

\o hi Takkat

6:43 AM
nah - I'm too addicted to it. Hi @Serg

Sorry then

I quit smoking 10 weeks ago but I couldn't quit my internets.

congrats!

thx

you're welcome
I have an Idea.
let's close (with proper inspection of course) all fsck check while booting question as duplicate
there are lots of them askubuntu.com/…
The dup target can be this one askubuntu.com/questions/383114/…

6:48 AM
great

or suggest any other?

I've been doing that for a while

thanks for the support :)

I think that is the best one because the answer has a really clear explanation
or to me it's clear... "look here's the code that does this"
some just have a picture, so hard to find

hmm.. that's a problem
but we have to be careful. not all of them is a dup

6:53 AM
definitely
(tell me if not)

I'm not trying to convince you guys to use Windows, but my SeaGate works great with it.

It doesn't work with Linux?

yes.
it says "Drive not recognized"
NOOOOO windows vulnerability!

@Zanna can he boot to the system? if not I'm not sure it's a dup.

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD like I said before, if windows made me blueberry pancakes and washed the dishes for me, I wouldn't use it
yeah she or he totally can @AnwarShah

6:57 AM
:P

SergKolo Changed his avatar/gravatar/logo.

I wondered if I can install ubuntu to a 1tb usb hard drive and boot off a USB
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Did you realize that just now?

well. then it's a dup

3 hours ago, by ƎpᴉʇʎXD
Serg and ByteCommander: Worlds Collide

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD Been waiting to say that for 3 hours.

6:59 AM
oh.

@Zanna but blueberry pancakes are so good ._.

@edwinksl I'll make my own rather than truck with M$

done voting

this is from yesterday or day before... maybe better than the other one (oops) askubuntu.com/questions/809900/…
which way to go there?

7:09 AM
one survived the close votes!

that first one says "my system does not start"

thanks. cleared now. my bad
but should be closed as a 'went away problem' imo

yeah... abandoned
no repro then?
I'm doing it...
either that or unclear, since there's not enough information to diagnose the problem

anyone will do

yeah sorry, I already VTC, just sayin

7:18 AM
no need to sorry :)

:)
this is a really simple problem... need to find a dupe for it askubuntu.com/questions/810342/…
brb

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD but the question is not EOL release specific. is it?
without that 15.10 tag, the question stands valid. only Close to vote if the question is specific to EOL release

no repro? or something!! askubuntu.com/questions/810379/…

that question is solvable i think. and it's new

I wonder if that space was intentional
I mean, apparently no error about the file .sh

7:52 AM
I believe that's not intentional. It's a java-bundled-with-netbeans IDE
I think he is copying from some tutorial and messed up the command

but should have been found anyway by glob and chmod takes multiple args... and surely it doesn't need -R
I'll shut up

i think so. I just read your comments there. seems the problem went away

so the command is full of typos
well found!

he was using some older versions i believe

oh
should we VTC or edit out the Mintiness askubuntu.com/questions/810407/…

7:58 AM

thank you oh guru
