I didn't think it was

holy what happened to that big pile of first posts ??

I still just want to get this settled :p
I see this on the Help Center: Development on Ubuntu.

there used to be around 400 each day in stck now it seems i have to fight a whole day to get my 20 full ??

But that doesn't apply

I'm done discussing it. :)

12:01 AM
nuuuu
@Videonauth o_O
I actually don't see anything that applies to this in either way
Meta time

12:13 AM
@chaskes I asked on Meta, just so you know, if you decide to put your opinion in a comment.
or answer

Thanks, but unfortunately, the view around here keeps moving more and more to keeping just about everything OT. I'm tired of debating it in meta as well.

I just want to form an educated opinion on this
But more things are becoming OT because there are more sites for specific things and more people with more opinions
I can VTC my own question. cool

not another is x on-topic post...

heheheheheheheheheh
read it though. I tried to make it at least somewhat coherent :p

Q: Are questions about the development of third-party programs on-topic?

Zacharee1The title probably isn't the best summary of my question, so don't let it hold too much weight. Recently, this question about whether or not Krusader was still being developed was asked: Is Krusader still being developed? Krusader is a file manager designed for KDE, but the description also sa...

ohai meta

lol

ooh, an update to snapd and snapcraft.

12:41 AM
I'm going to guess that it's still being developed. The latest revision was a month ago
but like you said, I can't say that for sure

@Zacharee1 no it was 9 days ago

@Seth lol as a pull request !? O_o

@Videonauth ikr xD

oh yeah
derpyderp
@Videonauth I think it's the right place to ask :p
This song isn't Adele's style at all:
But I like it

Adele's style is whatever Adele decides it is :P

12:45 AM
lol

25 tried some new stuff.

It definitely is not what she usually does

true.
I like it too btw.

@Seth there's the Water under the Bridge one, which is nice, but is also fast and upbeat

I don't think there's a single song on 25 I didn't like lol (I haven't heard them all though)
@Zacharee1 yup, like that one!

12:47 AM
This one kind of sounds like a folk song
it's interesting and fun and definitely breaks away from the pop trend at least a little
@Seth I have to listen to the album some time. I have Spotify Premium now, so I might as well use it ;p

> Anybody else scrolling through the comments because the music video hurts your eyes?
haha, yep. I like the effects but it does hurt my eyes.

maybe I should watch it

oh hey new coldplay song.

wat
really?

oh wait no. Just new video.

12:51 AM

oh man, but the video is awesome xD

them overlays
I get why they're there though
It's to represent all the voices singing in rounds
@Seth I think the effects there have Adele's beat though

@Videonauth I concur!

user139252
Though, I totally deserved it :p

still, there could have been more funny ways to counter that :)

@Videonauth I'm really hoping the intense sarcasm made it

@Zacharee1 Well, I didn't read any sarcasm in I your output, thats the problem with chat rooms, you not see the person, nor hear their intonation etc.. so a sarcastic meant shut up can easily geet wrong understood

So still no software recommendations for open source game engines?

phew, open source game engine mhmmmmm
Many tools called game engines are available for game designers to code a game quickly and easily without building from the ground up. == Engines == Note: The following list is not exhaustive. It mixes game engines with rendering engines as well as API bindings without any distinctions. == See also == Physics engine Game engine recreation List of open-source video games RPG creation software == References... ==

user139252
I know how to find them, I just wanted to know if anyone here has actually used one they would like to recommend

2:39 AM
i would go for unity i think if i would have to use it in a classroom full of beginners
or if you really want to deep enter then ogre
the question is what you want to achieve, how much time do you have in the class semester timeframe etc
so how many hours you actually have, and whats your goal to reach, this i think mostly limits out many of the engines listed
then next the level of the ones you want to teach
or is it coding for the sake of coding then go with a good tutorial which you incorperate into ypur teaching
and develop a small game which everyone will be able to achieve
I could point you to a good tutorial like that on YT

what's YT

YouTube ?

@HenryWHHack interesting link but not what i was referring to ;)
anyways is there a way when i ssh into my main computer from laptop to see the screen of my main computer ?

3:01 AM
@TheBrownOne eh. there's a huge amount of documentation around UE4. it's open source/free on github. i've toyed with it a bit, but not produced anything with playable levels. more of a "let's explore the engine" sort of thing and a "hey, i can do wallrunning with collisions" and such
bonus - it targets almost all platforms - including VR headsets.

okay. snaps are officially annoying.
4

with great power comes great responsibility in bearing annoyances.

I can't even get silentcast to snap. IT'S A BASH SCRIPT COMM'ON

lol it seems for the sake of my sanity i stick to .deb files for now

@Videonauth oops. thanks.

3:05 AM
np :)
dont even know if she has read it
still i wonder if theres a possibility to run a game on my main machine and get the screen here on my laptop so the main machine does the computing and only streams video one way and keyboard presses the other way

3:34 AM
Quick question...do we have some place in askubuntu to post generic questions and answers(which in general a lot of folks do ask)?
Like how to test whether wireless adaptor driver is working fine or not?

user139252
@RobotHumans Would it work on something with only 4GB of RAM over VNC?

@TheBrownOne did you read the whole part above i have written after that wiki link ?

user139252
Ah, nope. Missed that.

user139252
Thanks :D

user139252
I'll look into Unity

3:41 AM
i wasnt sure this is why i thought i'd better ask

user139252
We have beginners, but they at least know how to code a bit from when I taught last year

user139252
We have a whole year to play around with things, and I've got two months to learn the engine before I start teaching

ah ok well then maybe like robothumans mentioned UE (unreal engine) or unity might be your thing both are similar complex
both support mono and lua scripting and so on

user139252
Looks like Unity3D editor isn't for Linux...

@Videonauth steam has a streaming thing that would work

3:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah but do you think i can play that way? i thought this was only streaming?

user139252
@Videonauth a VNC server?

@Videonauth you can play
works pretty well on a reasonably fast connection

well GBit LAN
well ill try that soon

user139252
You could do a local VNC connection...

user139252
No extra Steam software :P

3:51 AM
sounds even better, i sometimes want to play a game when i cant rest well, even with my insomnia i lay down and try to rest but osometimes it dont work out that well then i love to play a game but my laptop is a weakling when it comes to computing power or GPU
so there my idea comes from, leting the game run on my main machine and simply have the graphics to display and the keyboard to catch on the laptop

4:05 AM
@TheBrownOne steam's stuff has lower latency apparently
and I've gotten it working on a cherry trail atom so...

i just wonder how long we have to live with those messages that steam is outdated even with steam repos on

My windows box is on the beta, need to install it on the new linux box

well i have no windows box anymore ;)

lets see

only linux boxes and i get this annoying window popping up telling me steam is outdated

Can you run XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP="" gedit?
I'm trying to show header bars on all the gnome applications

you need to edit the file by hand best, its in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

¿...?
What has it to do with CSD and header bars?

running that command opens gedit
im still not sure why you want to set the current_desktop to ""

11:18 AM
But, when you open gedit with this command, do you see the header bar?
Gnome 3 style?

Ok, it works!
Thanks for testing!

still no clue why you need to alter the directory variables for that

Q: What does the 'hide-identity' gsetting do?

Paranoid PandaOn Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 with GNOME 3.20 I have just noticed that there is a hide-identity gsetting: I have read its description, but what exactly would be the difference if I turned it on? What information would it stop showing and where exactly? And would turning this option cause any problems?

user136984
VTC this Minty question.

11:51 AM
@ParanoidPanda Wow. Three downvotes when all one needed to do is just remove the mention of "Mint" and make the question useful to Ubuntu users. You do realize that Mint and Ubuntu use the same repos, right?
But the OP is running Mint, so surely it will be the Linux Mint repository, not the Ubuntu one. — Paranoid Panda 16 mins ago
So that comment makes no sense, you'd run the exact same command in Mint and install the exact same package.

user136984
@terdon: Well, I've never properly used Mint so how would I know?

@ParanoidPanda If you don't know, try not to leave comments like that then.
Mint is 100% compatible with Ubuntu and uses the same repositories + their own one on top of it.
Here's an example of an (old) Mint sources.list. This was the default:
deb packages.linuxmint.com maya main upstream import
deb archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main restricted universe multiverse
deb archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise partner
deb packages.medibuntu.org precise free non-free

@Videonauth I don't think so, but you could use grep -l

12:12 PM
used grep -r string /etc/*
looking for the files where the log paths are set

Yes. If you added the -l, it would have only printed the file names, not the matching lines.

ufw for example writes exatly into three files but not in its own file lol

user136984
@terdon: Ok, I've deleted my comment and cast a reopen vote.

@ParanoidPanda Did you remove all mention of Mint from the question?
I'm not arguing that it's on topic as it was. Only that the solution is the same for both systems so we may as well edit it into shape and keep it.

user136984
@terdon: Well, it came up in the review queue so someone appears to have edited it and removed all mentions of Mint.

@WilliamMariager Ctrl+Super+D

@Seth Ah! You mean it can't be hacked after applying the band-aid. Fair enough.

indeed.

I thought you meant there's some kind of method in place blocking all remote access to webcams by default.

2:58 PM
so.. I'm trying to snap a different app now. It's just a collections of scripts so the .deb uses an INSTALL file, but snappy requires I specify a build-system plugin.. I don't think that uses a build system though, right?
Which means I'll have to write my own plugin..

3:22 PM
@Seth Super?

@WilliamMariager the Windows key

you can set Win+D to show Desktop too.

I think unity-tweak-tool has a setting somewhere that lets you assign the keyboard shortcut to show desktop.

it definitely does

Heh, I have no clue what system this is. Only that it showed Ubuntu upon boot.

if you press Ctrl+Alt+T does a terminal open?

Nope. Seems very unresponsive.
A company was throwing away a bunch of kiosk systems. We decided to take them off their hands. I guess they might've disabled a bunch of things.

Maybe it's just a very old version... Did Ubuntu always have such functionality?

I get a glimpse of the desktop, and then it boots up a fullscreen firefox.

@ParanoidPanda ctrl+alt+t is as old as ubuntu itself..

yeah, looks like it got kiosked.

@WilliamMariager ah. That would explain a few things.
The easiest way to undo it would be to reinstall..

3:28 PM
Yeah, I think I might just do that.
