@NathanOsman Oh hey, we decided to go with Gtk for now to save time and because it has a better chance of making it onto the liveCD then. The gui isn't too complex so it shouldn't be much of an issue, although I would have preferred using Qt.

@Seth Cool.

@Richard I would agree.

1:12 AM
@NathanOsman The HTML links are a bit messed up in this 2buntu article: 2buntu.com/articles/1034/how-to-write-a-manpage I dunno if that applies to the rest of the site or not, but certainly broken there :)

1:40 AM
@Seth remember the developer account question-meta-question-question, the dev accounts use ubuntu one SSO so you can change stuff on the ubuntu one account, can you reopen - I'm formulating an answer right now

@Mateo awesome, I'll do that.
He did mention something like that in his meta post, but it was kinda hard to dissect.

yeah... I thought it could be that, or something like a ubuntu member thing, but I was quite sure it wasn't an AU account

ok, all reopened. If you can think of a good tag at the same time that'd be good too ;)

@Seth thanks, I'm taking screenshots now ;)

awesome!

@Mateo looks like he was pretty reasonable about it though, so that is good.
/me is writing manpages

@Seth yeah, I kind of wish they renamed it to Ubuntu login or something :)
it is confusing

yes, that is a good idea.

Q: startx, gui on tty7 and sound on tty 1

fotanusI just installed ubuntu minimal and fluxbox. I have installed no login manager, so after the system boots, I login in the tty1 and use the startx command to run. After that, if I open Firefox and go to a youtube video (or use aplay to play a wav file) I have no sound. alsamixer is unmutted and a...

Q: How to export X Display with Audio?

GarouDanHow can I export my X Display with audio. For example, in tty1 if I put, "startx xmoto -- :1 &", I can play xmoto ok, but have no sound. If i put "xinit -- :1 &"and then put "xmoto &", again I can play xmoto ok, but have no sound. The strange thing is the sound continues in tty1...if I go back ...

maybe?

3:04 AM
wow, so all the relevant tags were removed...

@Seth there's a good explanation for those articles with messed up links. We originally used WordPress and later imported the content into our new blog engine.
Some of the WordPress content was raw HTML.
Our current engine only supports markdown.
So some really old articles haven't been converted yet.

3:38 AM
@NathanOsman ah, I see. Well as long as you know about it :)
(very helpful article btw)
@Mateo sigh

I am using Ubuntu (with Xfce) 14.04 ; after reading Free GNU/Linux distributions and Explaining Why We Don't Endorse Other Systems I'm thinking to migrate to gNewSense or Trisquel. Which is recommended to try ?

Bump, bump-ity bump! — Gregory Opera Feb 19 at 13:26
Constructive comment: Yes, no?

8:32 AM
@blade19899 I occasionally bump things. Evidently this fellow doesn't know about ninja edits bumping things to the top of the queue
oh, jeebus, i'm so sorry. that didn't need a bump. that needed a nap and fire... so i could smell napalm in the morning
did you know that doing something like adding data through an edit or inserting things you tried in an edit bumps you to the top of the unanswered queue? It's a VERY old question, so if you have to bump it and you haven't tried anything... just extrapolate some logic there. — hbdgaf 14 secs ago
@blade19899 - problem solved.

@hbdgaf Job well done boys.
This is just too funny:
If I only drank beer!
Ugh, Mondays!

> Vibrant Forest: We won't tolerate "dull" or "boring", so wether it be from a cask or from a bottle we want our beer to excite the palate and stimulate the taste buds.
All beer claim to do that... but after a "Maß" at the Oktoberfest it stimulates the bladder rather than anything else ;)

Logging out of a Unity session while Evolution is running blocks log out for approx. a minute. There is no windows decoration, therefore manual closure of Evolution is not possible. Killing the running Evolution process from TTY will lead to an immediate log out. How to reproduce: Login to a session to start Evolution. Wait until there is no more activity in Evolution (that may block application termination). Log out from the session by me-menu or from terminal `gnome-session-quit --logout' What is expected: Evolution should terminate and the login screen should be displayed. What happens instead: The windows decoration disappears on all open windows. No launcher or panel, mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. After 1 minute Evolution quits and the login screen appears. This is stock Evolution 3.10.4-0ubuntu2 from 14.04.1 LTS (am64 3.13.0-39-generic) but was present in 12.04 and still is in 14.10 (the latter with intact windows decoration however). this bug nearly made me stop using Evolution - but I could never get used to TB for very obscure reasons.

@hbdgaf if only the right side coffee was not there... :)
<-- hates filter coffee

I like coffee, although I prefer the "perfect cup" glass evaporative brewers you put on bunsen/gas stove etc. It's still nice to have the utility of a multifunction machine that fits on my counter.

It's only the traditional Italian machines that survive our demand for more than a year.

I find it hard to believe that one of these dies that quickly en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_coffee_maker

it does look very very fragile... :)
Many people here have those pad machines... there are reusable pad-like adapters to put in cheaper ground coffee.

But it doesn't show the original question above the question

I wonder if this will have any effect on possibly offense tools allowed to be in repo?

11:31 AM
@hbdgaf as far as I read the regulations they are quite hardware-bound... e.g. any computers capable of more than 8 Teraflops are not allowed to be exported. Software is only included marginally in a sense that software used to produce any such computers falls under these regulations as well.
8 TFlops may be reached pretty soon - put in some high end GPUs and we will be there...

Can you please tell me site where I can create function for bash
*in bash programming

@aVIRA generic programming issues & questions is probably better suited here - stackoverflow.com - make sure you do your research carefully - poorly worded questions tend to get downvoted to oblivion
however unix.stackexchange.com and ourselves also answer bash stuff - just make sure the question is relevant to the operating system you are using before posting

@fossfreedom I've experienced that. T'was painfull

@aVIRA In your ~/.bashrc or directly in the commandline:
foo(){ echo bar; }
Then run foo and it will print bar.

witnessed something weird here -> askubuntu.com/q/547956/114489 where the user geary could comment even with 1 rep. is it possible?

@astrob0t no he can't - however what you cannot see is that he added an answer which has been converted into a comment

was that automated or someone manually did it?

manual - me

i remember seeing an answer with the exact words and a downvote. i was about to comment something there when that comment appeared and my page refreshed and the answer disappeared. i thought, that's cool.

This question edited before by @Braiam and deleted [install-from-source] tag from that. See the edit #9. @muru @EricCarvalho
Also that tag already added by himself(@Braiam) in edit #8 but deleted in #9 edit again by himself again.

7:13 PM
@KasiyA [software-installation] tag becomes too broad a topic to search for with Ubuntu software center also in picture. every other software issue gets tagged with this [software-installation] tag. so [install-from-source] seemed more relevant to me here.

7:31 PM
@astrob0t I think we are more concerned about braiam's tagging habits, your add seems logical to me

Q: Tag 'source' seems to be pointless

TimI just asked a question and added the tag source-code but only typed source to get it. I then noticed that the tag source exists, it has 83 questions and no wiki - should it be deleted? No questions should have this tag, any question tagged with this can be changed to be tagged with source-code ...

@astrob0t Did you see the other removed tags in edit #8. MORE specific tags[tar bzip2 zip] are deleted too. While you still have added the deleted tag.

7:54 PM
@FlackBot are you listening? you are here without nathan?

I thought the question was about 'software installation' in general and 'software installation from source' to be particular. That was my intention behind re-adding the tag. [tar, bzip2 and zip] tags appeared to be more divergent and would not have added value to the question and searches. :)
