12:01 AM
Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh....
So. tired.
me. ran. 2. much
me. 8. 2. much
Just missed @Nile

i thought corgis were high energy?

@CallmeV We are.... :O
@Nile Mmmmm... bounties work pretty well.... I don't have too much rep here... So, sorry, can't offer the little rep i have... :[
@Nile See here:

@coding_corgi Seth said I should wait for the answerer to respond, anyways

5
Q: How can I prevent my Pi's SD card from getting corrupted so often?

coding_corgiI get an I/O error at boot and then get this 'error': (I am running the latest version of Raspbian) Entering kdb (current=0xca82ac80, pid 1) due to keyboard entry kdb> _ And I have seen it before, and was explained that my SD card got corrupted since I did not shutdown correctly. One week late...

@Nile yeah

@coding_corgi How does this help?
Oh, for me to read?

12:06 AM
@Nile Me gets +1s, attention, and teh CODEZ!
If you notice, I was offering a bounty
that's the pros
cons:

There's a +1

you lose rep
@Nile :O Thanks...

@coding_corgi: Maybe you should run and eat at the same time. #Energy replenishment cycle.
2

@coding_corgi A bounty for what?

Now let's all calm down, breathe, and get our thoughts in order before we continue talking, alrighty?

12:07 AM
@CatW More like: blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhh..... Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhh....... cycle
@FEichinger Hush hush
@Nile a question

@coding_corgi You don't get to tell me to hush.

you should run

@FEichinger Over the net? i can't send bytes over some wire and radio frequencies that you interpret as 'hush hush'?

@coding_corgi: BLaaaargh? A barfing cycle? O_O Well I suppose....

@CallmeV AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! My dumb cousins!
@CatW yes...
@CallmeV his floppy ears are cute

12:10 AM
@coding_corgi I didn't say '"you can't", I said "you don't get to". Fundamental difference, dear.

heheh. What's been up @FEichinger

@FEichinger i don't get too? boo..... Hush hush.....
Sadly, you can't shut corgis up....

@CallmeV I've been up. For way too long already.

@FEichinger i know the feeling

@coding_corgi: Im guessing FEichinger is not saying shut up but more like: You need a higher rep to unlock the privelidge

12:12 AM
@CatW That's one way to put it.

@FEichinger ughhhhh........ Can't. imagine. how. you. feel. I seem to do that often... :P Like i always mix things up for being up too late..
@CatW No no no! You're getting crazy! I'm going for the gold version of this badge:

@coding_corgi: Sometimes being late is better than being early, like being late to a plane that crashed.

@CatW mmmm....
@CallmeV that's only running from a corgi silly.... CORGIES CAN AND WILL STALK YOU!
:P

@coding_corgi: Course I'm always early, then I'm sitting down waiting.... >.<

12:15 AM
@CallmeV It's tempting, really. But I haven't ignored anyone in a while ...

it's still beautiful, pristine, absence of hush
@FEichinger ;)

all of a sudden it got very quite
@Nile PING Nile (255.255.255.0) 56(84) bytes of data.

@coding_corgi what..?

in a comic book it would be portrayed as crickets, crickets

@Nile 64 bytes from Nile (255.255.255.0): icmp_req=1 ttl=255 time=3.11 ms

12:23 AM
@coding_corgi Okay then. Need to go. Bye.

@CallmeV Blaargh! It's a stupid super hero
@Nile 64 bytes from Nile (255.255.255.0): icmp_req=2 ttl=255 time=9.45 ms

Yep, enough AUGR for me today. When even the Bridge is less insane, something is wrong.

jrg
eh?
somebody is pinging?

@jrg Ha ha...
yeah

jrg
that is not a FQDN.
just so you know.

12:29 AM
@jrg ?
Bridge to @jrg

jrg
A fully qualified domain name (FQDN), sometimes also referred as an absolute domain name, is a domain name that specifies its exact location in the tree hierarchy of the Domain Name System (DNS). It specifies all domain levels, including the top-level domain and the root zone. A fully qualified domain name is distinguished by its lack of ambiguity: it can only be interpreted one way. FQDNs first arose out of the need for uniformity as the Internet was quickly growing in size in the late 1980s. For example, given a device with a local hostname myhost and a parent domain name example.com, t...

@jrg to bridge

jrg
Nile is not a FQDN.

oh yeah

jrg
so i can't pingeth it.

outside of this LAN.

12:31 AM
@jrg Well, it's not like each SE account get's a IP
:P
@jrg me has question... :D

jrg
Well, actually... strictly speaking, no. But it has a similar equivalent - userid.

@jrg whatev, it vas a joke

jrg
@coding_corgi ask away!

@jrg I have googled this 3 months ago, but the project just popped back up, i would like to change my boot screen colors to something more... manly... that orange on purple... something like.... pink on white? ha ha... no.... I would like to change my boot screen's colors to #00FF00 on #000000, but the last time i googled, i would have to photoshop a bunch of images in a dir, is there a better way?
i know it's not that clear...

jrg
OH.
i know what you're asking about.

12:35 AM
@jrg 'OH.' what?
@jrg ok...

jrg

A: How to make a custom boot-up splash animation

beanarooTo change the Plymouth splash in 11.10: Open Accessories > Terminal Run: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mefrio-g/plymouthmanager sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install plymouth-manager Open in applications menu.

@jrg mmmm...
@jrg Plymouth sounds fimiliar....

jrg
plymouth is the project responsible for it.

@jrg ok
@jrg already installed by default?

jrg
yes.
but you can tweak it.

12:38 AM
@jrg ok

jrg
@seth: don't feel bad, I didn't figure out PEBKAC for almost 2 years.
took me 5 years on the internet before I was able to find it and figure it out. :)

@jrg Hey @jrg, have you built a computer before?

jrg
I've built servers, from other servers.
Moved CPUs around, ordered SATA controllers, scrounged ram and hard drives. nothing beyond that.

Two people in this room really suck at staring things ---------------------------------------->

jrg
it's not me.

12:41 AM
I'd put money on saying @coding_corgi is one of them.

@Nile ha ha... I definitley did NOT star that stupid msg
@Nile two? I think you and yourself

@coding_corgi 1) That's not possible, 2) See screenshot below

jrg
anyway, who stars what isn't really that interesting.

@jrg ok... good enough... I'm saving up to buy a motherboard (almost there!) and I was wondering, when you have a motherboard, how do you find the right case that matches the motherboard
@Nile ill give you one too

jrg
@coding_corgi oh, hangon

12:45 AM
@jrg ok, thanks

jrg
this is a good guide, although that's not what i was looking for

@Nile ^

@coding_corgi Meh, it's easily edited.

jrg
i.imgur.com/JlBCu.jpg | things i find while searching for a picture.

@Nile i would't waste my time, so i guess you edited yours, and yet you still lost your bet and your time, :\

jrg
12:49 AM
it was a spreadsheet (almost) of the different parts and rigs.

@coding_corgi My time was definitely lost, but you must be some of those, so my bet definitely isn't :P

jrg
and with tiers of "if you buy this case, you can expand from tiers 2-5, it's compatible" or something.

@Nile yes it is... I have a life == i don't start stupid idiotic stuff, period
ok @Nile? PERIOD!
@jrg ok...
@jrg I am looking at the link you gave me, i am not worrying about spending 90 bucks on wincrap (== windows)
ha ha
Long live Ubuntu

jrg
i'll have to save that for my "read later" folder.
i give up. i can't find it.

Hello.

would anyone be interested in helping to assemble a few metadata collections?

@jrg you were about to get my acceptance

Could a moderator stop this troll?

Q: Danish Mac keyboard layout isn't correct

TyiloNo matter which one of the 5 available Danish keyboard layouts I choose from, the @ symbol (at) is always alt2 instead of the alt', which is normal on Danish Mac keyboards. The answer to No keyboard layout in keyboard preferences to match Danish macbook doesn't fix this. List of Danish keyboard...

jrg
1:18 AM
@Tyilo cleaned up
thanks
@Nile lol

@jrg kidding anyways. metadata for what?

jrg
Metadata in this case means: location data from 6+ months ago, and daily email usage (time of day email is sent vs received).
no names in the emails, no subject lines, nothing of that sort.
just datetime stamps.

Sorry, all I can do is kismet the local area...
Though I could cobble something together in Java, perhaps.

jrg
I'd prefer that people volunteer their own data. ;P

@jrg he is still posting answers

1:21 AM
sigh Now the mods want datetime stamps of all of my TopCoder emails...

jrg
@Tyilo great...

And @Tyilo, he can't even spell "troll".

@hexafraction JAWA!

jrg
@Tyilo i just locked the question.
for the next 24 hours.
he should give up.

@jrg thanks :)

1:23 AM
@coding_corgi I don't associate with droid-stealing creatures of Tatooine. I like the Java language more.

jrg
Droid-borrowing.

Oh, and the SE platform must be broken. My SO weekly rating could NOT be 21st.

jrg
get your terminology right.

@jrg When I scanned that quickly I thought "drowning" for a second. My apologies.

jrg
lol

1:28 AM
@hexafraction why does every one say that? I always mean Java in a joking form,

I spent a summer avoiding it, so I guess it's etched into my mind.

i liked java
but it's too heavy
so
C/C++ and Python are sort've my friends

I haven't had issues with any heavy objects recently...

jrg
Interpreted languages aren't bad.
but compiled aren't bad either.

@jrg no
but Java isn't too.... Powerful maybe?

jrg
1:32 AM
it's a "what is the best tool for the job" type of problem.
Hey, we're using Java for some stuff. Cross-platform mostly.

@jrg very true

jrg
in conjunction with jruby.org

@jrg well, cross platform.. wha?

Well, to put it bluntly, Java is a cargo ship while Python is a small rowboat.

jrg
if we write in jruby, we can use the java packaging tools instead of having to write our own.

1:34 AM
@jrg ugh.... Jython Jruby, JHTML? JC JC++ JSQL JPascal, oh wait, there's something wrong with the last one

A friend of mine wrote a few other funny comparisons, I'll pastebin then.

jrg
Correction - Python/Ruby are the little sailing dinghies in the harbor that go crazy fast when you know how to use them, but are limited in their toolset.

@hexafraction mmmm.... Wouldn't say that, it has support on Macs and Linux type OSs
@hexafraction unless you're using windercrap (== windows)

@coding_corgi I've also rowed on both lakes and rivers.

it's got pretty good advantages, and downsides, let's not start 'arguing'
@hexafraction ok, look guys, this geek is showing off his athletic abilities! :P

1:37 AM
Not anymore, I'm positive for iron-deificiency-anemia.

@hexafraction ...

@hexafraction ?

Ellipsis means?

@hexafraction ?

1:39 AM
I detect looping.

@hexafraction ?

I may have pasted this already. It's a rant by a friend of mine that I dug up.
But Java isn't that bad there...

jrg
@hexafraction heh

@hexafraction You're friend must have been drunk, grumpy and very opinionated at the time

Dare you say that? ;)

1:45 AM
@hexafraction I wonder why... roll eyes
@hexafraction Dare I say my opinion?

He's always opinionated though not of drinking age.

@hexafraction Ah, well, that makes two of us!

Dare I figuratively drown you?

@hexafraction Dare I coutinueth?

Go ahead.

1:46 AM
Dare I shall!
CHARGE!!!

Still, I see nothing wrong with English, a laser printer, or breaststroke.

@hexafraction In HIS opinion, and yours, i used to love java, until i opened my eyes
you shall too one day... ;]

Not until I cease speaking English, wasting toner, and swimming slower than optimally.

@hexafraction that is a foolish opinion, shameth you!
java != to: speaking English, wasting toner, and swimming slower than optimally

Would you rather I speak esperanto, write in crayon, and swim medleys?

1:50 AM
@hexafraction as i said before: in your opinion
boy

Fair point.

corgis don't stop barking ;]
@hexafraction yes, let me tell you something... Java is a tool, not a favorite chew toy....

Yes. I use it as such. And as the only language I'm decent at that's acceptable for TopCoder.

jrg
ok, so, are you guys all scared stiff of me with my unusual request for science? ;)

Not really.

jrg
2:01 AM
ok. i'll check back with you once i've written my script to get that data from my own email account.

2:13 AM
back

@jrg ?

welcome back

Q: Cpyrit-cuda build install problem

user173106I'm getting an error when I try to build cpyrit-cuda on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS here is what I'm getting: brandon@San-Fran-La-49:~/cpyrit-cuda-0.4.0$ sudo python setup.py build running build running build_ext Skipping rebuild of Nvidia CUDA kernel ... Building modules... building 'cpyrit._cpyrit_cuda' ...

@Zignd almost saw that...
@Zignd why would 12.04 be related to python?!

@coding_corgi why "almost"?

@Zignd started to read, :P

@coding_corgi just removed the tag, as it's not a system dependent question

2:35 AM
@Zignd naah
@Zignd waz up?
me is trying to ( mercilessly ) slaughter a buggy in my code

@coding_corgi Well, at this exact moment in time and space. What about you?
@coding_corgi what programming language?

@Zignd JS, trying to finish this update on my website
and now, i shall be using an ide
NEED TO KILL TEH BUGGY WUGGY!!!

@coding_corgi cool, well I'm leaving the chat now It's 23:39 here in Brazil and I'm going to sleep now. I know programming too, but for desktop, I'm currently writing a system in C# for an hypothetical clothes store it's like a term paper. Cya!

@Zignd bye! btw: listen to brazilian music!i know spanish, and I would like to learn portugese... almost 21:00 here, bye!

@hexafraction - I wasn't sure anyone else got it, so I starred it.

2:49 AM
@coding_corgi I was reading the transcript... pcpartpicker.com
cc @jrg --^

@CallmeV me hate you :P why didn't you day that?!

@jrg :)

@Seth thanks man, i have local computer store that has tons of good deals, i'm looking at the AMD FX with some MSI motherboard

What I want to know is how do I find a motherboard that fits my box..

@CallmeV O..K?

2:51 AM
@Seth that's simply form factor and power supply comparisons.

@coding_corgi Which motherboard exactly?

@hexafraction i thought it was too funny not to star

@CallmeV yeh I know.

@Seth oh, thanks an, but some googles showed me that ATX goes with TX, micro-ATX goes w/ etc.
but okay, lemme find it

Thanks :)

2:52 AM
@Seth oh, you wanted to know?

i'm waiting for ermagherd why doesn't my full ATX server board with loads of slots fit in this micro-atx or btx case...

Cool

@Seth yeah....

2:55 AM
it must be the fault of ubuntu !!! their software made my motherboard physically not fit in the case !!!

@Seth I like the PCI slots, i'm going to put usb 3.0, wifi, and another video card

you shouldn't be thinking pci slots for video. you should be thinking pcie slots for video.

Ooh, 6 slots.
@CallmeV He's grouping all the PCI(etc) into PCI

i hope so

2:57 AM
@Seth thanks the thing i like the most about microcenter is: microcenter.com/site/products/amd_bundles.aspx, scroll down to the bottom, 3rd one to the left

they do sell pci cards after all...

@CallmeV i say potato you say patato
ME GETS TO BUNDLE!!! YAY YAY YAY!

you say volkswagen i say ferrari...

@coding_corgi way cheaper on Amazon:
Ah.. wait. bundle. got it.
@coding_corgi That's a sweet processor!

@Seth I get an AMD FX with 3.8GHz Quad-Core
@Seth the thing i don't like is this...
this case is mATX, and the other case is ATX
and that's the only case i like... waaaah! :P

3:02 AM
I know your pain ;)

then get a 3d printer and make an ostensibly 3000 case

me thinks it's crazy to spend > 50 on a case

problem.solved.

@CallmeV ha ha... no thanks

@Seth The answerer responded. He said he's not sure, basically.

3:03 AM
Oh great.

I think Lucio said he was willing to offer a bounty

Have you tried update-grub?

@Seth Yeah, remember? I ran into errors

Ah.. I don't.
I also think this is worth another try:

let me link you to the transcripts

3:05 AM
@Nile KK

it's back about where i said "wth is sda99" i think

7 hours ago, by Seth
Try update-grub first if I were you.

yep

@Seth this might be the one!!! microcenter.com/product/323929/…

@Seth Check the question. I addressed this too. The "GRUB location" tab was disabled when I tried before

3:06 AM
Ah.. yep. Try boot repair one last time @Nile

Just to make sure it's still disabled?

@Nile Yeah but you didn't even have a GRUB back then iirc
@Nile So yes.

removed

@Seth Okay, will do.

@coding_corgi Much better.

3:07 AM
@Seth meh....
Why are there RESET buttons on cases? any suggestions?
@Seth i found the real one!!!!!! microcenter.com/product/396983/…

good

@Seth yuppers!
@Seth have you built a computer?
ATTENTION
I shall post a 48 hour graph of recorded CPU temp, from my awesome program in 40 mins
just a little notification ;]

3:24 AM
^ @Seth I encountered this upon following the instructions on help.ubuntu.com/community/…
The commands I ran (boot repair told me to):
sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda4" dpkg --configure -a
sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda4" apt-get install -fy
sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda4" apt-get purge -y --force-yes grub*-common shim-signed

@Nile weet again... :P
@Nile Say YES!!! ha ha, don't do that.... :D

@coding_corgi ...what?

Let me look.

@Nile see what it's linked to

@Nile Which section of the directions?

3:36 AM
@Seth After completing step 3 of "Converting Ubuntu into EFI mode" the following window came up:

Then I would say yes myself.

@Seth okay.
@Seth Would I then need to set up my BIOS so it boots the hard drive in EFI mode? Or no because I don't have a BIOS?

I would think no.
it should already be booting in EFI mode

@Seth alrighty
@Seth Time to reboot and try it, then?
Be right back (hopefully)
Ah, the anxious few minutes in determining weather the blank screen will last for a little bit or an indefinite magnitude of time

@Nile ha ha

3:46 AM
@Nile Yeah really.

I've gotta say its indefinite, but ill give it four more minutes

@Nile Ubuntu would be prould of you

@coding_corgi They are proud of him. I am anyway :D:D

Q: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?

Jorge CastroI am trying to boot Ubuntu on my computer. When I boot my computer it boots to a black screen. How can I fix this? Table of Contents: If you are trying to install Ubuntu If you have a dual boot system If an update or something else caused your problem

maybe
@Nile I guess...

@seth ill give one of those solutions a try, then I'm off to bed after revising

3:53 AM
@Nile Okay. Wish you luck.

@seth actually Im not sure that any of those will work. The grub menu never appears at all...
Actually, ill update the post tomorrow morning. Tired
meh, I'll do it now

Okay then :)
Can someone clear the edit queue? @JorgeCastro ?
@Takkat --^ ?

@Seth Look at that, maybe it's more than 10 edits to a wiki: askubuntu.com/questions/316893/…

4:09 AM
You've only done 9 so far ;)
I did the other one.

Oh, okay.

4:22 AM
@seth since my edits would make it a wiki, can you change "there are concerns about this being dangerous, though, so I'd be glad to here other opinion." To "There are concerns about this being dangerous, though, so I'd be glad to here another opinion." And "(the most recent time that I've spent on that screen was about 40 minutes until I rebooted)."
