Q: Closing changes: [on hold], unclear, too broad, opinion-based, off-topic reasons, bye-bye to Too Localized

JaydlesAfter a ton of discussion, work and input from the community, we're rolling out the remainder of major closing changes that you've helped us design, as discussed in these prior posts. lol ill gotten badges? the necessity for badges to gain site functionality will drive the desire to cheat and gain them. how many badges Do i need to gain all the site functionality? 300 seems like a good number
I miss too localized.
@Seth The thing is that this largely seems like a "it doesn't work on SO so everyone else will have to suck it" thing ... again.
And I'm really growing tired of those types of changes.
shrug
Beside too localized I don't see a big problem.
I've seen my fare share of NARQ/NC arguments.
01:49
@shog9 how can you have "too broad" without a corresponding "too narrow"? Under these rules couldn't you ask a programming question that can't possibly help anyone but you, like Joel's mythical "there's a car parked outside my house" except "there's a recursive function parked outside my house"? — Jeff Atwood 5 hours ago
Right. I bet TL will be brought back.
I love how that basically answers precisely why TL should remain.
It's sad how, for once, Jeff out of all people has nailed it.
That's sad?
When does this become live elsewhere on the Stack? — Seth 6 secs ago

@Seth Yes, it is. Because it means that he's the least crazy out of the whole bunch - this time.
Also:
shrug.
01:55
@ShaWizDowArd, that is a bang-up idea. Look for a blog post early next week when we roll it out network-wide. — Jaydles 3 hours ago
> early next week when we roll it out network-wide
Ah..
I just really don't like the new system for how it forces a lot of stuff to be an off-topic close reason.
That is a problem.
Everything that isn't "too broad", "unclear" or "subjective", but should be closed, has to be defined as off-topic.
Which means we'll end up with a lot of lawyering about just how the topic is defined.
And a lot of meta reasons that just exist to fill what isn't covered.
Which is just more reason to bring back TL.. Yes, yes I see your point.

Q: Guys…I want to download the GOOGLE SEARCH RESULT PAGE using Linux commands

RamakrishnaWhen i try using wget command, the page which gets downloaded contains only the lefthand side part. I want the right-hand side part of the search-results page, which is called Knowledge Graph. Can anybody help me out in this please,..

@mojo706 1 is single user. it used to be that 2,3,4,5 were for varying levels of functionality, but people wanted things to be retarded so it got eliminated. init 6 is still reboot though.
@CallmeV It shows all tables after rsync , but in phpmyadmin I see Collation in use option. and innodb size shows 0 B.
@mojo706 np
@K.KPatel i'm guessing it just doesn't know it's there
@CallmeV All tables are copied successfully I checked that. Folder sizes and permissions are same.
04:45
I mean that your mysql instance or phpmyadmin or whatever haven't re-read table data or parsed it properly
and now for instacoffee frin nescafe
trigger a service restart and see if that doesn't fix it. my guess is that it will if the files are there and mysqld sees them
Tried twise to restart service. In tables it shows error like this Table comments: Can't find file: './red/acceptance_criteria.frm' (errno: 13)
or are you saying that i'm retired and extremely dangerous?
hahaha
seriously though, check permissions. even if the username shows up right check the uid.

Q: Ubuntu 12.04 resolver setup

Quick n DirtyWhen investigating how the DNS setup of my os (Ubuntu 12.04) works, I came to some questions I could not really find on the web. So what I observed was, that ubuntu uses Dnsmasq as a DNS resolver. When loooking into /etc/resolv.con, 127.0.1.1 is listed as nameserver. So the question here is, if...

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L asked and answered
14:24
@CallmeV free VPN?
what? a list of socks proxies or what are you looking for?
@Achu i have scrapers for all the really common proxy sites, but i'm working on turning it in to a django app
sorry :) i'm looking for a free VPN if you know of one :)
just use a free socks proxy. free vpn and free socks5\ is functionally the same.
I need it for torrent
if socksipy will connect to it it's encrypted. (the http name is deceptive because it requires https NOT http...which is highly irritating)
@Achu torrent is bad for you. don't do it.
get a VPS seedbox or walk away. doing it over VPN is just silly
14:28
@CallmeV: unless its ubuntu ;p
@CallmeV i'm fully aware of the risk. But i really need it now.
I have to download something important.
Is there something free sharing? resource sharing just like the open source philosophy which allows people to be free access, or just like tor?
i answered your question already. tor is slower and should only be used by people that NEED anonymous, not by people that want to pirate stuff.
Thank you @CallmeV for your answer. but well private stuff should call education materials ;)
understandable. i just can't condone that on an open forum
okay pardon my ignorance, but shouldn't there be a scapy-all package that pulls in all the optional dependencies like ruby-all?
I think we used to talk everything on this room. I'm sorry if there is a new rule here i been very long.
I'm not sure how ruby-all works but sound is a good idea
14:37
we can talk about anything and i make hints a lot. i was just saying.
Hi, I have a small doubt. I am installing a .deb package in debian via the command line like this: dpkg -i some-package.deb. The I get a 'package not installed' error, 'cause the dependencies are missing. To fix this, I ran sudo apt-get install -f. Now do I have to run dpkg -i some-package.deb again, or no?
if you can't get the dependencies you need stuff is going to fail
@CallmeV I know. But that's not my question. :-/
you should never force installation. if it complains it does it for a reason. fix the cause, don't band-aid stuff.
^ what i meant
@CallmeV I don't understand. So, should I first run apt-get install -f and then dpkg -i some-package.deb, or am I missing your point?
14:46
no. and you're not reading so you're on ignore now

@its_me if apt-get install -f installs the dependencies without deinstalling your some-package then you dont need to redo the dpkg -i some-package. Look more closely at the output of apt-get install -f to see what it is doing.

if you don't have unlimited broadband don't buy anything from blizzard. they went more oppressive than steam on offline play recently (diablo3)
first i paid for an optical disk and had to download the whole thing. then i find out that you need an active high-speed connection to play (i have an active connection, but it's slow). then i find out that the game is just eye-candy and quests on diablo 2. just saying...so not worth it. i won't be buying a blizzard game again since it's less tedious to pirate than it is to buy even if i buy it.
when i pirate a game i bought so i can play it offline, you're doing DRM wrong.
/rant
You're a little late to the party, don't you think?
who me? yes, late to the party.
i don't buy things while they still have "new" prices
15:18
Yeh, but the whole D3 always-on thing and Blizzard being a pain about it is now, what, a year old? And it was public as hell.
Buying into it this late and then complaining just seems odd.
lol
I bought the game new, played it once and was meh after that ;p
Fair point. I'm a little disconnected.
I'll download a crack instead. I'm getting my money out of the thing.
16:08
Hi all, I'm running XUbuntu 12.04 and when i go to settings manager -> window manager
the display is empty
so i cant setup keyboard shortcuts etc
any ideas?
well for one you could be missing packages.
Have you been tinkering with installing/uninstalling lately?
I might have!
when i originally set this laptop up
i was trying the xfce desktop
but had problems with it, so reverted back to xubuntu
after a week or so of having reverted and everything being ok
Hmm.
i had a problem where i logged on one day and all the titlebars were missing from windows
iirc i used some command line thing to fix that
but i wonder if i inadventantly changed from the default WM to metacity or something?
Yikes. Do you remember what command you used?
16:12
2851 ? Sl 0:04 \_ xfce4-session
2858 ? Sl 0:16 \_ metacity --sm-client-id 2da33ce62-4336-4450-bf28-50815711e9ed
one sec
i need to google 'my windows are scrwewed' to find the solution i used ;)
OK :)
Also, you can run echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP to figure out what DM you're currently using.
xfwm4 --replace
I think that was the command
tdalton@lp01877:~$ echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
XFCE
tdalton@lp01877:~$
i guess its not metacity then
so i guess xfce is broken some how
i did play around trying to get a newer version of xfce packages when trying to fix an issue in xfce
Like I said, you're probably missing a package somewhere.
but i thought id reverted all that when i went back to xubuntu
yup... any idea how to find it?
All I can say is look through the package manager.. That's what I always do ;)
16:16
synaptic? or is there a 'better' one?
Nothing better than Synaptic.. Though you can use the Software Center too.
You would search for xfce and xfce4 and see if there are any packages that look important not installed.
How about xfce4-settings?
yeah got that one
nothing stands out, but there's 78 packages matching xfce4
Yeah.. a lot.
How about libxfconf-0-2?
yeah all the obvious ones are there
ooh nice, but installed
Erg.
16:20
trying xfce-goodies
probably wont fix it, but it sounds like a fun pkg
:)
aww
doesnt work
force-reinstalling xfce4-settings
Try that.
I'll look for the window manager.
tried, didnt work
wonder if the settings manager logs anywhere obvious?
I don't know.. It might.
You can try reinstalling the window manager: xfwm4
16:25
yup, just doing exactly that
glad it's not facepalmingly obvious at least
going to relog, brb
Alright.
I'd restart after this too, to make sure changes took affect.
right
some progress
it still doesnt work
but...
when i log out sometimes it doesnt log out
and then when i try to log out again
i get an error that it cant talk to the session manager and still wont log out
i noticed that if i try to run this:
tdalton@lp01877:~$ xfce4-settings-manager
These settings cannot work with your current window manager (Metacity)
tdalton@lp01877:~$
i guess ive somehow swapped window manager to metacity from xfce4
Huh.
Try running (as a command) xfwm4
tdalton@lp01877:~$ xfwm4
xfwm4-Message: To replace the current window manager, try "--replace"

(xfwm4:3957): xfwm4-WARNING **: Another Window Manager is already running
tdalton@lp01877:~$
hmm
tdalton@lp01877:~$ xfwm4 --replace
....
the command has hung, but the desktop breifly went mad
so i suspect its worked
yay, window manager settings is there now!
Awesome.
Now try restarting and see if it was just one fluke or if there is a bigger problem.
16:38
I need to change my keyboard shortcuts first
the whole driver for this was to pause my music with keyboard hotkeys :D

what is it about mucking about with ragdolls is not fun that game/level designers do not understand?
also, /me is pleased to have an ar9xxx chipset on the new laptop
Well im pleased to say after unbinding alt-ctrl-home from 'fanny about with workspaces'
and then binding it to 'rhythmbox-client --play-pause' in a different bit of admin/settings ui
i finally got music play/pause to work!

Hi guys!
Simple question:
@Mitch doing things in archaic ways sometimes work more than doing them newfangled ways... just saying
while in the terminal, I am asked to define a directory for the installation
if I want to quit that installation at that point what do I need to write?
exit doesn't work - the terminal assumes it as a path to the installation
