12:28 AM
does anyone here use damn small linux?
having trouble with the cheat codes

12:57 AM
@jrg hit up lazypower. he had a nice html/js site with animations, zoom, and whatnot that played a lot like a presentation. i like the graphviz zoom manipulation/logic flowchart navigation presentation style though.

1:38 AM
Oh help.
Why does this question have 4 NC votes?

Q: how do I change my default country?

user161596I've been using Ubuntu for about 3 months and my computer for some random reason wants to believe that I live in Haiti when in reality I live in the us, this problem has caused me not to be able to play games that don’t have servers in Haiti. would anyone happen to know how to solve my issue?

That's just ridiculous. It might be NARQ, but NC? It also has two good answers.

changing your default country for the purposes of language and spell-check will not affect games. stop using proxies in haiti fella... just saying

Hisense sero 7 with ubuntu. anyone know if it works?

1.6GHz dual-core processor from an unnamed manufacturer and 4GB storage...if it did, it wouldn't be worth it.
not saying i wouldn't try it if one mysteriously arrived on my doorstep, but i have other things that need 100 bucks more than testing that right now

j0h
Im on the fence since the nexus has no interface for monitors, and no external storage.

I'm breadboarding an expander board for the micro/mini/whatever usb and usb peripherals (also thinking about desoldering the 4 "stereo" pins to be a usb easy access....as it should have been in the first place)

sorry dog hopped on the keyboard. jealous dog...

2:23 AM
@CallmeV thanks, i'll reach out.
i kind of wanted something i could put into say, slideshare or speakerdeck, but I guess I could always go the hipster route and do HTML5ishie stuff. or prezi.

j0h
so on a tablet such as the nexus 7, can i get gps info without being on a wifi network? Also what gps programs does ubuntu have?
And while not having a cellular plan

@j0h there's a gps api built-in, but i haven't tested it. e.g. the one kismet uses. part of the 13.04 roadmap for ubuntu-arm was making sure all the sensors work
it wasn't a roadmap really, they called them javelins since harder is better, but it's non-linear and any progress is good.

j0h
So I can get gps data while not being on wifi/ and not having a cell carrier?

that i could relatively trivially test. ask me again on wednesday. i'm working long days until tues so i don't have much time to get cross-building going until then.
warning, i'm using the non-cellular nex7 entry level.

j0h
k
actualy then, I have a question about the non-celular, nex7

2:39 AM
ok
"hello radio-shack..."

j0h
whats the missing component? is it missing a sim card? or is it locked down in firmware.

afaik it doesn't have a cellular chipset at all

j0h
can a non-cell nex7 be upgraded to be cellular?
oh
I just figured it was all the same hardware, and it was locked somehow

i doubt it. there's probs a bare spot on the board.

hey @jrg is there a way to undo a close vote and make another?

2:43 AM
yups. and the aft facing camera bracket for the cam exists if you get one from a production run after they added that option (couldn't say about earlier)

hey "Call me V" :)

he @Chan-HoSuh - you ever get that wifi thing sorted at the one coffeeshop?

lol, no
but you know what, life takes care of problems like that one way or another
first, I moved away from that coffeeshop, and second, my laptop was stolen, so either way....

is sad your laptop was stolen

sympathy appreciated... but everything else is going well, so that takes the edge off it
I'm rather annoyed I didn't use tracking software however.
I did get an IP off my Dropbox sync, but it doesn't seem like much can be done with it (just one IP shortly after the theft... and none since).

2:48 AM
once it's gone it's gone. just call it a day. i lost all my worldly possessions that don't fit in a suitcase in the last year and bought a camper. so it evens out. there is a certain amount of zen in my situation. yours could be the same.

yeah, I feel the same way. Your story sounds more interesting than mine though :)

it's not positive or uplifting i promise. not one to share.

Understood. So... how are things?

well enough. things are simpler. i play on things i enjoy in hopes that it becomes something that makes money while working on things i don't necessarily enjoy to make sure there's food. it's cheap living here, so i think it's the best plan.

Chicago?

j0h
2:52 AM
what is the ip

nope. left chitown

j0h
did your laptop have ssh?
server

Wow... switch users for a few minutes and all of Chrome's tabs crash.

@j0h, I'd rather not post it, since it's likely any info you scrape up will be outdated

j0h
try nslookup
and find the isp
then query them

2:54 AM
@j0h, thanks, I appreciate it, but I've been pursuing that.

j0h
do you have anything that says what your hardware profile was?
ISP will have logs, which will contain MAC address of connections

yeah, the problem is getting them to do something though.

you mean you don't have an NSL letter in your pocket?

j0h
Ive had 3 computers stolen. and got 2 back though it did take over a year

sorry gotta go, they're kicking me out of this coffee shop

j0h
2:57 AM
darn

:( have a better one

j0h
police will respond if you give them hardware info like a MAC
and proof of traffic

You'd think Java would contain built-in support for reading .tar files. After all, Python does.

j0h
@N
@n
@NathanOsman is that the dolan?

@NathanOsman it's probably around in an apache licensed library that oracle or ibm owns

2:59 AM
Actually, there's this.
...and it's thankfully released under the Apache license.

ibm made a monstrous contribution to openssl getting a fips compliant source license. even though my statement sounded negative it was about positives

Very true. Although FIPS means next to nothing for me up here in Canada.

fair enough

3:17 AM
The one I like about Java is that I can do this:
InputStream stream = new TarInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(new XZInputStream("somefile.tar.xz)));

I am using ubuntu specs: 12.04 (precise) 64-bit 3.2.0-44-generic GNOME 3.4.2. I always notice a hang when i open many application windows (say more than 5 ) and usually restart. What could be the solution ? It's my first time here. please bear with me. Thanks
can anyone throw some light on this ?

j0h
post exact error

@j0h it hangs totally is there some .log to look for
when i switch between application windows or to desktop icon on left side icon bar its totally hangs

3:34 AM
Yay! I just cut the size of my APK in half.

so does anyone here have exp. with damnsmall?

j0h
can you get into a terminal via ctrl+alt+F5?
dsl 3.1

wait i will try to reproduce the same situation.

methinks shift ctrl f1 - I'll check in just a sec
I downloaded the damn thing yesterday as a moray into linux and it's great

j0h
dsl was cool but then tinycore came and kicked its but with a 18 sec boot time

3:36 AM
by the end of the week I am going to have so many linux distros on my computer 0_0
:P
but anyways I'm running dsl on a vm - q something

j0h
slitaz was a decent install @30 MB

and when I open it up it doesn't by default present me with cheat codes as boot options
how do I change it?

j0h
did you install dsl? or are you running a live version?

@j0h embedded copy
with QEMU

This is sickening. Chrome is eating over 700MB of RAM, while Eclipse + Android emulator is eating up over 1 GB. No wonder the swapfile is so busy.

j0h
3:39 AM
idk, can you hit esc or tab or ctrl+shift durring boot to see the menu?

@j0h one sec while I reboot

@j0h it's working from terminal when it hangs

j0h
@nathan try disabiling javascript

Then I wouldn't be posting comments here :P

what do I press?

j0h
3:41 AM
try esc
(escape)
does it have a splash screen?

hrm escape caused this: ^[

@j0h i have restarted from terminal to come back to normal .

j0h
@Johann what is the cheat page you reffer to? (I have used dsl, but it was a long while ago) do you mean the page where it says things like how to configure, and what the root settings are?

j0h
@texenthusiast Im confused, it hangs in the terminal? Or it hangs in the GUI? if you can login to the terminal, and not hang, then try reading $dmesg and look for errors there.
if youre hanging in the terminal, try booting into a failsafe mode, or into singleuser mode via advnced boot options.

3:53 AM
@j0h In GUI it hangs with application windows open and while switching between windows it hangs. even during the hang period i can go to terminal and login

@j0h thanks for the links. i will come back with tests and errrors

j0h
which is in part what that screen shot is.

so how do I bring that up on the vm copy
or embedded copy I guess

j0h
you tried ctrl+shift or tab, or esc while grub was booting?

4:01 AM
one sec
yep

j0h
I think its in the menu list menu.lst or something. The livecd version will boot to it. on an install, it gets configured, the you have to edit that file to make changes
you want the menu list to ask you every time for boot options?
I think "e" and or "c" allow for editing grub boot menu options.
if youre using lilo, I have no idea, but its probably a similar methodology.

@j0h there is no memtest in grub 2 options should i proceed with askubuntu.com/q/126160/161865
BTW i am using windows/ubuntu dual boot

j0h
ah mem test is the feature you want?
oops wrong guy
@texenthusiast you have no advanced boot options?>

Debugging in the emulator is painfully slow.

@j0h in the advanced boot it has old boot loaders
for eg: 3.2.0-37-generic to 3.2.0-43-generic
@j0h i have followed the thread as i a missing the memtest . i will be back once i am done with that. thanks
@j0h too low on memory message when i have done with memtest +serial console also
error:too small lower memory (0x99100 > 0x98400)

4:26 AM
Oh this is almost intolerable.
K. I'm killing anything Java relating and restarting all of the tools.

@j0h anyway thanks i will see tomorrow. thanks for all help. will do later. bye

Q: Install from Ubuntu Software Centre to a location of my choice

katya sehgalI need to ensure that when I download from Ubuntu Software Centre, I do so on a self-made partition, and not in the HOME folder. This applies only to applications and games. Is this possible? [This may be a basic issue, but I found no easily accessible answer for the same.]

Q: Webcam not detected

Lais AlvesI installed 13.04 a few days ago, and my USB webcam isn't being detected. I use it a lot with programs such as Skype to communicate with family and people at work. I've tried several different applications and social networks, but the webcam still isn't found, and I'm not sure how to solve this. ...

i fail to see how these're different questions...
and they're by the same user... :/

Excuse me, I forgot that fact. I'll rephrase the question. Thank you. — Lais Alves 14 mins ago
@TheLordofTime i deleted one of the question

Just so everyone knows, I'll be sporadically going offline while I perform a firmware flash on my router.
I've had it with the stock firmware and I'm going to install DD-WRT.

dd-wrt owns <3 Best thing I ever did to my router

8:04 PM
hello. I have a question. If I download a game worth 300 MBs, which after install comes to 1 GB, I am assuming that 1 GB goes into 'File System' or HOME? Kindly answer so I can proceed.

@jokerdino cool

anyone?

@katyasehgal it depends?
if it's WINE it'll be in your HOME directory, if it's installed through apt-get or something or dpkg it's probably strewn throughout the root filesystem
@katyasehgal it all really depends on what you're installing and how.
@katyasehgal so without details about the game/program specifically, it'll be almost impossible to answer such a general question

8:28 PM
@TheLordofTime thanks @TheLordofTime. It is 0 A.D from Software Centre. I have a 1 GB or so in the HOME directory. Rest of my space is in the self-made partition.
Okay. I have added a comment here. Maybe an answer.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/300322/install-from-ubuntu-software-centre-to-a-location-of-my-choice/300329?noredirect=1#300329

8:50 PM
if it's from the software center it's probably installing to the system rather than home
but IDK because software center stuff is sometimes not just standard packages where I can examine the installer :p

I just flashed the DD-WRT firmware to my router.
I'm now waiting a few moments before performing one last hardware reset.
It worked!
And now everything seems to be back up.

Q: Common terminal commands

SimoneFor example, does it exist a terminal command i can use to "clean" the pc from time to time? To definitely delete old kernels and packages, for example... And when/how i can run it? Thank you!

More problems... I'm reflashing the firmware again.

Q: How to save an image displayed in the stock browser without downloading it a second time?

Nathan OsmanI am trying to save a scanned image from a printer on the local network with the stock Android browser. The browser interface looks something like this: As soon as I click "start scan", the printer begins scanning the image. When complete, it is displayed in the little box on the right and a m...

I can honestly say that (so far) the router has been working great. A few quirks, but I was able to fix them.
