@StefanoPalazzo theres a multi-user movement in TeX that will allow you to real time collaborate on documents, a-la-google-documents style. If you want the link hit me up and i'll fish it up.

2:30 AM
@Trufa you're better off asking that as a question

3:09 AM
@TheEvilPhoenix Thanks, I will

3:19 AM
@Trufa I don't think that is possible
Chrome is a funny beast; it probably cannot allow you to do that...

@RolandTaylor I was able to do it in ubuntu
doesnt mean I will manage here in kde

I know, I'm referring to kubuntu :)
aka ubuntu + kde

@RolandTaylor ohh ok :(

@RolandTaylor thanks!

3:21 AM
@Trufa np
I think there might be a way though, come to think of it.
Have you posted a question?

Q: How to have the "close", "maximize" and "minimize" buttons on the left in google-chrome in kde

TrufaI would like to achieve what I was able to do in Ubuntu. I've now switched to KDE and would like to have the buttons on the left hand side. I have already set it for the "native" windows and they look like this: I would like to have this: On the other side (left). Thanks in advance!

@RolandTaylor there you go :)

A: How to have the "close", "maximize" and "minimize" buttons on the left in google-chrome in kde

Roland TaylorA possible solution would be to use gnome-settings-daemon to trick Chrome into using metacity's layout (if you still have gnome installed that is). If you have metacity installed and set to have the buttons on the left, add gnome-settings-daemon to your kde startup applications. You will need to...

@GeorgeEdison Your favorite color is black..

@Flackbot: What is my favorite color?
Two thumbs up for a good memory :)

good morning

@htorque Hello.

6:40 AM
Hi

Hello. I've got a local apache server set up. it is not connected to the internet, it's just for local testing. I can't see any of my local sites because it says "You don't have permission to access / on this server." What permissions do I need to set?

time budgeting today's todo → 16h30m. given that the day has less than 16h left, i'm in trouble. :D
@Takkat how are the absorbers doing?

@DaveMG chmod a+rwx /var/www/your_project_folder_or_file_name
OR
chmod a+rwx /var/www/your_project_folder/*
for only for you use
chmod u+rwx

@Achu thanks. Doesn't seem to be working. Do I need to restart Apache for new permissions to take effect?

u = user
r = read
w = write
x = execute

6:48 AM
@htorque absorbers from last week still here :(

@DaveMG no
just give the permission

Hmmm... In /var/www I have a symlink to a directory in my home folder where all my web sites are. /var/www/Websites -> /home/dave/Websites. Is there something about a symlink that affects this?

why you need symlink?
why don't you put your project's under /var/www?

The reason for the symlink is so I can keep all my web site data in my home directory, which is on a different partition. Easier to backup, and if I need to re-install Ubuntu, less risk of overwriting the data.
I do this on my laptop and it works, so I don't see why it is not working on this computer.

Ohh in that case you should create apache sub-domain
do you know how to create a sub-domain?

6:54 AM
Never had to do it before. Is it really necessary?

If you want to put all your projects out side of /var/www Yes

Sorry... I just think we might be going down the wrong path. I have the exact same set up on another computer, and it works, and I don't use subdomains. Something is just set up wrong on this computer, but I can't tell what.

is the other computer Ubuntu Apache?

@Takkat nasty absorbers. by the end of the day i should have collected some thousands of files full of funny floating point numbers, else i'm screwed (deadline 1 1/2 months away and sifting through all that data and writing stuff down takes time)... -.-

outch that sounds bad... you'll manage!

7:01 AM
i won't as my time budgeting shows :D
or maybe i shouldn't assign one hour to each of the five coffee breaks? :D
kidding :P

do a time warp!

if i could bend time i would stop it, not warp around :P

it's unbelievable how many seconds fit in a minute if you have absorber overload..

many events -> time goes by fast, few events -> seconds are like hours
i just have to get rid of all events :D

today I'll need 140s/min for all future events

7:05 AM
good luck with that! i gotta go :P

ty same!

ty, bye

@Takkat Thank you,Sorry I was away :-)

7:20 AM
np @ManjotSingh I am constantly absorbed here anyway

Ok,Actually I am suffering from Viral

Q: How to set up an apt-cacher server?

karthick87I have more than 500 systems running ubuntu 10.04, ubuntu 10.10 and ubuntu 11.04. It is difficult for us to install new packages to these machines from internet, because of the high bandwidth usage. I am planning to set up an apt-cacher server, such that it should install packages from a local ma...

8:39 AM
I have made the first alpha release of my open source bible application Wide Margin t.co/jA4fhb7, a release which would not have been possible without significant help from the AskUbuntu community.

@trampster \o/ great!

@lazyPower do want
morning all :)

morning!
I could not sleep last night so it's still sunday for me :-X

Hi Rinzwind, Stefano :)

@trampster cool!
@Takkat who are you? >:-D

8:44 AM
Morning all @FlackBot

today I am a robot fighting my own laziness

@Lekensteyn To be honest... I really don't have the capability of understanding that statement yet.

lol... It going to be a high rep day looking at the start of today: 25 bounty, 15 for an accepted and 10 normal rep :X

hehe, i'm already behind 30min after 1h :D
this is going to be a fun day :D

wow that's fast htorque :X going to catch up fast or are you going to play catch up all day?

8:46 AM
my rep is stagnating.. and blocked from absorbers

Is it possible to add httponly cookies in Chromium Console?

@Rinzwind no, i think that would be like a dog trying to catch his tail

well that's fun to watch :-D

yeah, at the end of the day the dog is exhausted but haven't catched it, so why bother? :D

we once had a dog that chased the light reflecting from a cd on to the wall and when we pointed the ligth just behind him he'd forget about the light once he wiggled his tail and would chase his tail for hours.

8:48 AM
it's all about re-scheduling work items. far away.
dogs are so intelligent!

you plan 80% of the hours in a day! that way you can catch up >:-D

i planned 16h for today when today only had 15h left :D

boot a live cd, start gparted, use copy and paste
it's so easy
copy and paste even preserves the uuids (as to be expected)

well at my work we get something to code that has 4 hours planned but those tend to take up 15 minutes so at the end I always have finished 50 planned hours and still had time to do some things on AU

8:52 AM
are you hiring?
:D

Some procedures are that incredibly easy in Ubuntu that people don't believe in them.

yeah! need to speak dutch though ;-)

no problem - german is an awful dutch dialect, right? ;);)

lol

@Takkat maybe bad experience with windows tools... i don't know how often i've killed a system by using partition magic

8:54 AM
not maybe - I am sure it's that

1/15 work items done \o/ - time for a break... a two hours long break... in my bed. tired

time for some dragon slaying \o/

Oli
Can anybody here spot why one file is not pink and bold in this list?

9:09 AM
@Oli unrecognised mimetype?
a wild guess :)

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo file gets it right still

opened by another process?

Oli
not that I know of
I renamed it to .txt and it's still green
lsof can't find anything with that filename

I don't know what's going on there

Oli
Hmm yeah .flv's get special highlighting by the looks of it.
very odd

9:12 AM
@Oli copy one of the files and rename it to something.f4v

Oli
as do avis
@StefanoPalazzo Yeah, no formatting. it seems to be based purely on the extension

makes sense, I remember reading something about that here on AU
(possibly writing. let me try to find it)
1
A: Color Meanings in Terminal

Stefano PalazzoYou can find out what colours ls uses by looking at the $LS_COLORS variable: Turquoise: audio files1 Bright Red: Archives and compressed files2 Purple: images and videos3 In addition, files are colourised by attributes: 1:, aac, au, flac, mid, midi, mka, mp3, mpc, ogg, ra, wav, axa, oga...

So they just forgot to add f4v to their list of video formats.

Oli
It's not a very common one

I remember when linux didn't care about file extensions. those were the days ;)
have you got a laptop called "ernie"?

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo heh, no, not yet

9:20 AM
that's a great idea. the server could be "count" and the NAS could be "oscar"

9:31 AM
that's so pathetic... it's cheaper to buy a wireless desktop (keybord + mouse) online than at a local hardware store (Saturn in my case). online it's 20€ + shipping vs. 39€ at the store. displayport cable? cheapest i can get here is 15€, online it starts at 4.20€ - and then they wonder why they have to close stores or file for bankruptcy.

@htorque in the shops they've to pay the sellers. Well, there are always old-fashioned people who do not trust the interwho

those salesmen tend to be totally incompetent. all they do is read what's on the package. :P

How to start deluge minimised, only with a tray (notification area) icon? http://bit.ly/me48L0 #notificationarea

besides... 20 vs. 39 - that's a plus of almost 100%

Agreed and you can sit back in your chair

9:36 AM
4.20€ vs 15... i don't even wanna do the math :D

I still go to stores despite this
(say, for anything < 200€)
not Saturn though, they're pure evil :P

i don't have much choice around here
conrad... haha

@Rinzwind hi

@karthick87 heya :-)

10:05 AM
Hi @StefanoPalazzo \o

Hi all! :D

@Alvar Hey, nice to see you!

How did it go with that changing the sound of desktop notifications?

Hi @Alvar; it works, the stackapps page is almost ready, I'm now making a screenshot and looking for an icon

:D
@Lekensteyn so when will I be able to download and install it? (What sounds will be available?)

10:14 AM
There are 4 presets available, I find 2 & 3 less annoying than the current one. It could be available in a quarter if Gimp start up without segfaulting
2

@Lekensteyn cool, will I be able to use my own sounds? I have some that I like...

yo! dragon won :(

@Alvar It currently only works with uploaded files

@Lekensteyn ok, but will you be able to upload your own sounds? might be better for a second version...

@Alvar I'll be looking at it. Do you know a good host for that?

10:18 AM
@Lekensteyn dropbox? but the best would be a server and a domain name to upload to. I heard @MArcoCeppi had some space on a server, ask him.
@Lekensteyn He talked about hose servers earlier this year...

Would 1MB a reasonable limit? Or could it be less?

@Lekensteyn well the sound would just be heard for like 3 seconds so more than 1 mb is probably fine, but still 1 mb isn't that much.
in storage*
gtg... cya later, good work btw :)

1MB isn't much, but abuse must be prevented

@Rinzwind pls look @ the error, any solution?

10:34 AM
why is there a space before /maverick-updates?
looks fishy to me

no, that's fine

oh ok :)

i can't explain those lines, but that's what they always look, eg.:
http://archive.ubuntu.com oneiric-security/restricted
work item 2/15 \o/

hmm well I do not get why it errors out then; must be network related then?

This is the source file, can you check it pls..
@Rinzwind ^ ^

10:39 AM
i would just open http://bla:port/ubuntu in a browser

yeah... if you open 172.29.32.9:3142/ubuntu is a browser what happens then?
sources list looks good; if ip and port are good ;-)
4x sausages with chilisauce \o/

@Rinzwind i get a page..
@Rinzwind ^ ^

10:57 AM
remove the pic ;-) it has your admin mail adress in it :-\ no idea if that can be used to hack etc

@StefanoPalazzo :( i could not attend your cls

so this is all good.
@Amithkk ha! you missed an excellent event

@Rinzwind Oh yoes you can hack!
@Rinzwind <impossible>GIVE ME TIME AT MIDNIGHT</impossible>

@Rinzwind what may be the issue?
@Rinzwind any guess?

don't know. Looks like it should work.
wait... do other things get installed?
like lets say does 'sudo apt-cache search apache' work?
w/o the sudo if you are root :-)

11:11 AM
Want me to check it in client?

yeah; that's where the install error is from so I'd say from the client :)

has read transcript of classroom
notices i could have skipped school for that kind of knowledge

Thats working @Rinzwind

aha

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

11:18 AM
so everything does work :-) soooo guessing... it's the openssh-client file that's the problem!?

Question:
Can I Xforward a remote session of vlc to another computer? (SSH)

@Amithkk no idea :-)

:D

@Rinzwind no none of the packages is getting installed..

hmm

11:20 AM
Err http://172.29.32.9/ubuntu/ maverick-updates/main libapr1 i386 1.4.2-3ubuntu1.1
404 Not Found

'search' uses the list from the server so that works.
'install' wants the actual file and can not find it

@Rinzwind see the Askubuntu Classroom Widget on my blog :D
http://amithswebblog.wordpress.com

@Rinzwind so ?

@Amithkk add the transcript from y-day's classroom!! that way ppl can find what was talked about.
@karthick87 just thinking out loud ;-) we got an apt-server at work but I am still on a holiday so I can't check :-D

@Rinzwind give a finalised/q-free transcript

11:25 AM
stefano will have one ;)

sigh @StefanoPalazzo is not online?

and alvar and roland will have 1 (roland made a pdf I think)

Create fancy images and stuff.
And of course content.

@OctavianDamiean :D content,Dont ask me but fancy images is my thing

Really no need to. Fancy images are my thingy for almost nine years. I'll handle that, it is just a matter of time.
