@JamesGifford!
@Rinzwind what was amusing was that the answer was to start up gnome-panel
@lazyPower Dude. The way you're hopping on me as soon as I pop in is almost freaky. ;)
@JamesGifford D:! hides
how're you? :)
@ajmitch yeah. talking about messing up the easy way ;)
00:01
@RolandTaylor lol.
why can't we downvote comments :D
Good :) Was wondering where you have been hiding
I'm actually going afk for real for a few minutes :P, btw check the blog \o/

00:02
He knows what I mean :D
or more accurate 'the'?
@lazyPower I've been hiding in a movie theater for 11 hours yesterday. :)

@Rinzwind the blahg. 2buntu.com
00:02
You got a job?
@JamesGifford good movies? or working?
actually, I spent less than 2 hours of that actually watching a movie.
that 2buntu.com theme is nearly unreadable here
@ajmitch agreed.
@ajmitch fonts too small?
00:03
dang the ff tip is useful
too small, text colour too light
hate the colloring on the blog but I can fix that
I was actually at a geek conference @lazyPower @Rinzwind. Met a few cool folks.
Nice, i hit one of those up last week myself.
@ajmitch cool, noted ^^. I'll fix the fonts when I get back (I hope).
00:05
I'm addicted to meetups
I'm becoming addicted to meetups.
@ajmitch text too small is nothing control-+ can not fix :)
links on the blog are not clickable :*
@Rinzwind it doesn't inspire me to read a blog if I have to zoom in & squint before I could read anything
I just close the tab & go on my way
@JamesGifford can you do CSS?
it should be a simple/quick fix :)
(Kudos if you get it done before I get back)
What, fix the font size?
Actually, @Thex is currently trying to get stacktack working. i'll work on it once he's done.
i don't want to overwrite his changes. :P
00:08
@JamesGifford stacktack?
I want that quicklist editor :D
what's that?
Lets us embed AU posts and the accepted answer.
makes us better than a content farm. :P
oh sweet :D
(not just AU - any SE site)
00:09
aight - brb (will fix the font when I get back - it's a percentage lol)
@RolandTaylor ah ok. cya
@JamesGifford I go to 7 a month :)

@MarcoCeppi I go to... 2. if I'm lucky.
Trying to get a LUG (Linux User Group) started in Cleveland
the topic of the last Pittsburgh LUG that i did not attend, was power consumption in data centers
sounded about as exciting as pulling teeth

Banshee has come a long way
00:41
@lazypower The only bad part about the conference was the main sponsor.

shrug ya cant escape them
they seem to be everywhere
that whole market penetration thing
youtube.com/watch?v=I99UHa2yUds&feature=related -- may be iphone specific but he's talking about MVC, which i find very interesting.
@JamesGifford do you understand MVC basics? and i mean MVC theory, not the popular misconception that it only exists in C# :P
The session run by the Opera browser lady about HTML5 was really funny. She kept talking about "those certain browsers that don't always work well" lol.
MVC=model, view controller? Yup.
haha, the blame-storm of the century, see: ie
I have that up in the background while working on some UML for class

Anyone know how to run a .bat file in Wine?
@GeorgeEdison type wine cmd.exe
Well... I was actually needing to run it in a shell script.
So what ended up working was 'wine cmd /c some_bat_file.bat'
The /c seems to be required to execute the .bat file.
06:04
@StefanoPalazzo Any progress on the lens?

@GeorgeEdison the last I heard, david callé can still reproduce the bug
I don't know what's going on at this point...
oh that reminds me, something very strange: if you look on the project page at launchpad.net/askubuntu-lens, there's a user "Sara-delacruz1" with "202 points", on their user page it says they're most active in the askubuntu-lens answer tracker (which isn't even set up)
I wonder what that's about

Good morning all
07:17
good afternoon fellas!

Hi @Rinzwind
hello @Takkat
It is cup final day in Holland! Go Ajax O
Hi @KaustubhP
07:26
@Takkat dude, do you use banshee + lastfm?
Isnt is a single sig-on kind of thing? I have to allow banshee to use lastfm each time.
been nagging me from 2 days now..
@KaustubhP sorry, I have so much got used to Guayadeque that I just don't feel to try out anything else atm
@Takkat cool, have to try it out then..
G'deque is not so nicely integrated as is Banshee
They have a ppa:anonbeat/guayadeque with guayadeque-svn to get most recent bugfixes and frequent new features

can you see the images?
yes!
can you in return advice on editing? :D
@htorque I see 6 images in that answer
where what
i don't get a list of suggested edits, i have to stumble over them
no no no something else
see my comment to the opera quicklist here: askubuntu.com/questions/35488/…
would it be better to nuke his answer and completly rewrite it containing the things inside the link I posted there? Or let it be like this?
hm. guess i'd make it a new answer
(basically opera got quicklist support and some other stufff natively so the answer is no longer valid).
hmmm never thought about that one :=D I'll start typing
10:32
the answer is still valid - it's a quicklist that does exactly what it says it's supposed to do
oh wait
yes but when you open the file to edit it'll have alot more inside it :D
** waiting **
:=)
that's not exactly a quicklist like the others but a python script that adds progress and co support
well, go ahead and post it
it's a dynamic quicklist ;) something canonical briefly mentioned but has no examples of :D
if the community likes it you get upvotes, if it doesn't you get downvoted
and if it doesn't care, then nothing happens
:D
LOL
soooo
now I need to talk to myself in convincing me that getting downvoted is worth the risc :=)
10:36
it's a community question so you won't lose points (afaik)
Thing is... it is not an answer to the question. That's what stopping me :D
(and you won't get downvotes - it's not wrong after all :P)

well, it says "custom launchers" and that's what it is

Q: shell tweak to show current path in addition

hello im using ubuntu 10.10 and now i got in the shell somthing like that: machine1user@mylinux:~: how can i change it to machine1user@mylinux:/my/current/path :~: ?

Hi. I have a silly but urgent question to ask. How can I know that the ubutnu installed on my system is 32bit or 64bit ??
that's easy :+
@Rinzwind how ??
uname is the command
uname -a
@SandeepKrFOSS start a gnome-terminal: Alt+F2 > gnome-terminal, then type the command Rinzwind posted
11:12
I got this

Linux sandeep-PI945GCM 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
that would be a 32-bit installation
what now ?
@htorque How ?
file /sbin/init
shows: /sbin/init: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, stripped
the i386 tells me it's a x86 cpu -> 32-bit
11:13
thank you
lol
but I didn't expect uname -a to show i686 :X
@SandeepKrFOSS for 64-bit it would return x86_64
can I search au on my own answers? :-P
11:28
sure, just search for "user:me is:answer"
you are quickly becomming my fav au member :=)
How can I disable the grey highlighting on askubuntu.com? it highlights everything! :O It's just so annoying....
@Alvar that gray thing is based on your tags
it is probably highlighing all 11.04 tags
I HATE IT!
:P
11:31
well can u disable it?
well the last one complaining (that was yesterday) made a custom css.
@marcoceppi @jorgecastro @stefanopalazzo @takkat can I disable the grey highlightening?
@Rinzwind well that's just LOL
There :P
lol I was looking at the history of this chat but can not find it :(
haha
later got to study math now...
bye! :)
and it is gray >:-D
hmmmmmm idea in getting lots of flag weight: 1. I change it to gray 1. someone else changes it to grey 3. another changes it back to gray. .... profit :D
answer is way out of what is asked :X
11:49
epic lol fail
seriously. not a word is related to the question :X
ahah
@htorque +1 on the gconftool. searched for it myself but kept ending up on compiz wiki :P
why can't u get less than 1 rep? if you really suck on something you should be able to get like -100 :P
11:58
no he/she has +1
check his history ;)
it says +1 but he has 1 q and -1 rep on it :D
yes true, but it doesn't show -1 on his page.. so no he has +1!
if he get's an upvote he will have 2 rep! (or how much u now gets for an upvote...)
L0L
is it me or does the error contain a hint to where to look for an answer?
should I ask if he did try that?
12:10
LOL
Rosberg O
What are the message that pop up when the mouse is still called? http://bit.ly/kSi2hh #mouse
I feel like someone is stalking me on AU :P
And that one made me spill coca cola on my keyboard. Thanks twitter :P
12:55
@Rinzwind why do you flag as duplicate and put an answer on the duplicated question?
if you don' want me to do that I will stop :=)
but that one you are talking abiut I found the answer on uf and then realised to i should have checked for duplicates :D
13:11
Typically what one would do is flag as duplicate and add a comment which should stop most other people from answering (since the answer already exists). If the answers on the thread that was duplicated suck I would recommend placing new answers there while the other one is being closed :)
Then there are special circumstances - like the older of the two threads has poor question wording, or little to no answers - and the newer one has amazing quality in how the question is asked and it's answers - so we'll close the older one in favor of the new one
13:25
On what date was askubuntu launched? I know it was in July 2010.
@MarcoCeppi Why don't I get more rep for questions on meta? :)
No one does - meta does not give you rep
@MarcoCeppi I know ;) I was asking why you don't get it! ;)
@MarcoCeppi thx :)
and why not called that tag "non-gray" :D
@Alvar Private beta started on 07/28/2010; Public beta started 08/04/2010; Site officially launched in October just a few days before Maverick
and on a totally non related note: raspberrypi.org a Ubuntu powered 25 pound costing computer :D
13:36
@Rinzwind that would be awesome!
@Rinzwind Just put that in the likes box - it should take even if it doesn't exist
@MarcoCeppi thank you! :) I was wondering when the site would become 1 years of age ;).
LOL
it there someone regged on day 1?
I remember seeing a 1 year badge?
@Rinzwind LOL :O
13:38
you should start count from the official release...
@htorque is the man! :P
and then that person has 199 rep :X
nah, i don't know
:P
questions... is there a non-user sometimes kicking old questions? I saw one with no answer showing up; answered it but then realised it was from 2010 (with no editing done in the topic).
13:42
what was the first... question, user, answer, upvote, etc on askubuntu?
ooo a meta question there...
LOL
1st user Geoff Dalgas
user 1 gives a error 404; so it is this one: meta.askubuntu.com/users/2/geoff-dalgas
but he has a 101 rep so can not become a yearling :)
on meta I was thinking of askubuntu lol
aaah got to go..
13:56
@Rinzwind Yes, his name is Community - he is userid -1
The Community user will bump old unanswered questions, and do various cleanups on the site. But it's just a simple computer :)
@MarcoCeppi like tweet bot :P
Yeah, but community user is much smarter than tweetbot
14:11
@all Anyone around going to UDS tomorrow?
How to find a file of a particular extension ?

Q: How to copy/paste text from remote system?

karthick87I used to access a remote system via VNC viewer, but when i copy some text from remote system and paste in my text editor(local system), nothing happens. Do i need to install any additional packages to achieve this task?

14:50
@MarcoCeppi cool :)
@Av
@Alvar you thief!
15:05
Can someone tell me how to create a bootable image from existing files?
hmm.
@Greg sorry, that was just a random "hmm", co-incidently occuring after your question..
heh ok
@Greg you can chroot.
hang on, I have a how-to.
Google for remastersys. Then tell me, if thats not what you want.
Alternatively, you can read the Community Guide.
How to copy/paste text from remote system? http://bit.ly/kJvdtE #remoteaccess
@karthick87 getting some love from twitter
15:15
Ok, I want to file a banshee bug. Anyway I can make it reproducable?
@KaustubhP basically I have all Windows installation files on a USB drive, and I want to install Windows in VirtualBox so I can test my applications
@Greg ah, I assuemd you were talking about Ubuntu. Well I am afraid I dont know if a Windows system can be chrooted. Let me search.
opens new Chromium tab, and begins googling
I'm searching too, but never done this before
I think we be searching for a method to do this:
The Windows Imaging Format (WIM) is a file-based disk image format. It was developed by Microsoft to deploy Windows Vista and all later Windows operating system releases, which use it as part of their standard installation procedure. It works equally well with older versions of Windows however, and is used as part of Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs. Design Like other disk image formats, a WIM file contains a set of files and associated filesystem metadata. However, unlike sector-based formats (such as .ISO, .CUE/.BIN used for CD and DVD images), WIM is file-based, which means that th...
I see
On the other hand, I already have Windows installed on a secondary partition. Could I use virtualbox to boot this?
I have tried, but don't think it's possible without a hack
15:25
I dont have a clue :( boot partitions and grub are my weak points..
never played with them enough to be confident enough to screw wid em.
same. I think I'll just boot into Windows for now for testing my apps

Q: Why is the data transfer rate so slow on my external USB 2.0 drive?

TakkatMy external 1TB hard drive is connected to the front USB2.0 socket on my 11.04 box. When copying files I have a very slow data transfer rate rate of approx. 12 MB/sec maximum even though from the hard disk utility it says it is connected at high-speed USB (480 MB/s): This the output of lsusb: ...

15:32
@Takkat thunderbolt is the future! ;) 12gbit/s
I have another eSATA drive for the main machine
where in germany is it 28+? :O
South of course :P
well LOL
@Takkat the front of the CPU always gives slow transfer. Connect it to the motherboard, and check.
15:33
@Takkat he is using a slow cable >:-D
@Alvar it is 40* C here :O
@KaustubhP well where are u ? in an oven?
@KaustubhP lol
@Alvar India :)

@Alvar wow, you swedish?
@Alvar you stole my tag :(
@KaustubhP aha, so?

15:37
@Alvar I see through your acting attempt there! :=D
@KaustubhP haha löddeköpinge... haha that's like 20km from here...
@KaustubhP 13,1 MB/s at the back USB port :(
@Rinzwind have you heard of a joke? that's what people do when they want to be funny? ;)
@Takkat are you using the cable that came with the disc?
@Rinzwind still lookin for another cable
15:38
@Alvar thats cool!
@Takkat :D hmmm did you do a dmesg | tail after inserting the disc?
@Takkat what is the read/write on the harddrive?
@Takkat hmm, thats strange. Even I have HiSpeed enabledd from the BIOS, but I never get more than 30 MiBps
found a brand-new cable
I found a 750 Gb disc. going to try it myself too :D
15:43
@Rinzwind so what would this tell us?
@Takkat it should say something with High Speed
it says attached SCSI disk :S
new cable: 14.5 MB/s :'(
hmm my disc doesn't auto mount :D
brb
@Takkat the port how much can it produce? what is the max?
@Alvar haven't benchmarked it but with sticks it seems o.k.
15:50
@Takkat ok, but what can a usb 2.0 produce in the best conditions?
Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a specification to establish communication between devices and a host controller (usually a personal computer), developed and invented by Ajay Bhatt, while working for Intel. USB has effectively replaced a variety of interfaces such as serial and parallel ports. USB can connect computer peripherals such as mice, keyboards, digital cameras, printers, personal media players, flash drives, Network Adapters, and external hard drives. For many of those devices, USB has become the standard connection method. USB was designed for personal computers, but it h...
supposedly up to 480 MB/s for the port but the disk will be slower
regarding my previous statement: I have a dead 750 Gb disc :P
I have a dead 80 gb disk :(
@Rinzwind this is not much alive :P
my last dead disk was 20 GB (that was much then)
my 500 Gb disc shows 480@disc utility
now for a big file transfer :D
15:54
I'm curious
28.5
hmm that would save me 3 hours time :P
schedule for uds remote day 1 planned :D
unfortunately i can only listen to those sessions (best case)
are you guys taking part?
not me
