@TheNerdAL we all need help

Hi, Do people use editors (vim/emacs/bluefish/something other) to edit questions and answers or do most people just use the site's (stackexchange) editor?
DoR

@MJB I think everyone uses the site editor, I don't think there would be any reason to do otherwise.
MJB
MJB
@Oli Nice!!!! didn't know that one ;)

But seriously, why on earth would somebody not use the built-in markdown editor? Not only is it actually quite good, it also handles image uploads and gives you a nice preview.

(Although I have used gedit to write a particularly large question on StackOverflow, just as I've used it to reformat people's crappy HTML formatting to answer questions for them)
But most of the time, I just rock the modified WMDEditor
02:15
I love the editor
I never used markdown until this site either
and I'm already a huge fan
MJB
MJB
That's true, the features are quite nice. I'm just a bit used to using my own editor for everything... don't know if I'm ready to take the plunge ;)
Oli
Oli
@JorgeCastro I was the same but with StackOverflow and as a result I now use it as the formatting option of choice for the websites I build (effectively forcing it on my clients)
Oli
Oli
So much easier than babbling around with tags (although I'd love some CSS options)
I wish moinmoin had the same format
I can't stand using the ubuntu wiki now after using markdown
Oli

Yeah moinmoin is very unnatural

Was thinking about setting up intelligent (vim) snippets to do the html formatting and such.
Oli
Oli
almost half two here
MJB

But maybe that's going a bit overboard there...

02:20
@MJB But why do you need to do HTML formatting? The most complex thing I do on here is nested lists which is just playing around with spaces and -s
brb time to do some bootcharting
MJB
MJB
As beeing quite new to askubuntu, I'm trying to adhere to the formatting standards. That's actually the most difficult thing (when to do box, when to quote, when to list etc.). So I thought of setting up shortcuts for listed actions, code, filenames, images and all that... within thesame editor where I have access to all other shortcuts, spellcheck, interface and such.
then again... maybe I should just use markdown and save myself a lot of time ;)
Anyway, it's nice to know what most of you use. thanks.
there's a guide somewhere

Q: Style guide for questions and answers

EvanFollowing the style guides on Stack Overflow and Wikipedia, I would like to propose that we create a style guide of our own. Let's hold ourselves to a high standard and create or promote questions and responses that can be understood and followed by people who have just started with Ubuntu. Let...

I don't agree with the site icons on external links though
but whatever

Do you know what the preferered way is to explain to install a package? Some answers use "sudo apt-get install foo" others link to the package in apt, sometimes even with package website.

Q: How to post links that install software via apt?

lovinglinuxThere are some posts with nice Software Center icons and links to software installation via apt. How to do that?

I generally stick to those
unless their command line oriented questions
in which case I add the CLI for it

Good heavens, I really should use the search option more often...
most everything you need is on meta
if not, ask

Oh my word I'm going to have to read hours of logs..
go to #ubuntu-classroom everybody, there's around 40mins left (:

Q: I am running Lubuntu and I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET

OpTiCNeRdI do have a problem, answers are VERY appreciated. I have Lubuntu 10.10 I think... running on an old machine but it runs well. But I can use the terminal to see all my wireless cards but is there an easy way to connect to a wireless access point. Once again answers are very appreciated

I don't know where to start with this one.

@StefanoPalazzo heh, had to sneak in an AU mention
Of course! (:
It's six in the morning, I'm going to go to sleep now. Thanks again, really good stuff.

Q: Using the fsc mount option with nfsroot kernel parameter to allow FS-cache

meanderixI'm PXE-booting a Ubuntu 10.10 system, where I specify the kernel parameters as follows: append root=/dev/nfs initrd=ubuntu-boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-24-generic nfsroot=11.22.33.44:/data/nfsroot,fsc ip=dhcp rw I need to use the mount option 'fsc' in order to use FS-cache functionality (the cachef...

I was getting ready to bounty this!

Woah - what's with the ASP.net room?
On Ask Ubuntu?
20:12
dunno
Just wondering. When is the cutoff for package changes for Natty?
what do you mean?
@Jorge: Well, @lfaraone was telling me that after a certain point, packages are 'frozen' and cannot be modified.
...except for major bugs, of course.
either feature freeze on 2011/02/24, or final freeze on 2011/04/14
The reason I ask is because StackApplet 1.4 hasn't been added yet.
1.3 is in Natty, and I filed a bug to get 1.4 in, but nothing yet.
Hmmm... now I can't find it.
Ah, there we go.
Thanks.
@GeorgeEdison It's not an ASP.net room. If you read the transcript it was some help for @lazyPower with jQuery and ASP.net code - the "everyone loves" title was sarcasm.
@Marco: I know... I'm just bugging everyone :P
20:36
:D
I just want to share the funniest thing I've read in a while:
This does not look like an Ubuntu Question...

Q: Can`t start apache2?

sasaI have installed apache2. But there is a problem with starting apache2 after update. apache2: Syntax error on line 215 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Cannot load /System/Library/Apache/Modules/mod_include.so into server: /System/Library/Apache/Modules/mod_include.so: cannot open shared object ...

Looks to me like a Mac path.
But I'd wait for the user to answer the comments.
Those are Mac paths
Maybe they installed it on Ubuntu but they had a Mac config file they thought they could use unmodified.
20:52
@GeorgeEdison Mmm, maybe.
@GeorgeEdison That's probably true, else the line Syntax error on line 215 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf makes no sense
The user does say they're on 10.04 LTS
Madness indeed, I had seen that question yesterday & it looked a bit funny :)

Q: Disable new invisible border feature? (ruins compiz grid)

IkeA new feature was added recently that adds an invisible border around the windows to grab for resizing (although i thought the new resize grip solved any big issues). This annoys me because it destroys the usefulness of the grid plugin of compiz.. i'm not sure if the border is part of compiz or ...

i'm so glad he asked the question, because i was wondering why wmctrl was acting so weird
didn't know they added padding around windows - just found it when disabling the window shadow which now is part of the theme
21:11
Lol!
> Ubuntu is an ancient african word, meaning "I can't configure Debian"
@htorque how do you make it do the grid like that?
@GeorgeEdison oh that's so old :P
@JorgeCastro i have no idea - i've never really used compiz before unity, so all those plugins are pretty new to me. the default right now is to split like in win 7 afaic
right
that's what I use it for
I have Compiz set up to do something like that.
Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Left makes the window take up the left half of the screen.
i have to check irclogs, but i think smspillaz is working on a fix for that padding when using grid
21:14
...and pressing Ctrl+Alt+Right makes the window take up the right half of the screen.
@htorque everyone loves smspillaz
@htorque if you find a bug report add it to the answer pls.
Electorate badge!!
@fluteflute congrats ;-)

@JorgeCastro haven't found a bug report, just a short conversation between Amaranth and smspillaz on #ayatana
I wonder how many sourceforge users will bother to recover their password, and how many will just not bother
I didn't know people used SF still, heh
Exactly :)
There are a few projects still hosted there though
